INT. MONICA REYES’S APARTMENT – 5:00 PM
Monica places several Christmas cookies onto
a plate and arranges them in a circular order. A knock on her door
catches her attention.
I’ll be right there!
Monica quickly puts plastic wrap over the cookies,
grabs her coat and the plate and runs to the door, opening it to find
(not expecting him/not thrilled)
Monica isn’t happy to see him.
What do you want, Robert?
Just wanted to stop by and
see how you’re doing.
He acts as if nothing is wrong between them,
hoping what he said to her in Mexico would have blown over by now.
And to wish you a Merry-
-I haven’t forgotten the last
time we spoke, Robert.
She starts to shut the door on him, but he blocks
it with his hand.
He looks at her through the half-closed door.
His eyes telling her he wants her to be with him again.
I know we can work things
out again. Fix wherever we
I’m really not interested
Robert. Ok? (beat) Leave me alone.
Her eyes see Brad coming up the stairs.
(back to Robert)
If you don’t mind, I have to go.
She opens the door, pushing Robert out of the
way with her body’s space. Robert watches her lock the door. Without
another word, Monica walks away from him and meets Brad halfway down
the hall. She wraps her free arm around Brad’s and walks out of her
apartment building. Brad looks back at Comer with a suspicious look
as he leaves the building.
EXT. BUILDING – CON’T
Brad opens the car door for Monica. She gets
in. Brad goes around the front of the car, just as Comer leaves the
building. Comer looks at Monica as he leaves, making eye contact with
her. She looks away from him, wishing he never came. If only she’d
never met him in New Orleans...
Brad gets in the car and drives off.
Traffic was backed up on
the highway. We’ll be a
little late to John’s.
It’ll be all right.
Brad noticed her reaction to Comer and can tell
she’s bothered by him. He looks at her.
Monica looks at him and forces a smile.
Brad nods his head and turns his attention back
to the road. He can tell something is bothering her, but how can he
help if she won’t tell him. Without realizing it, he lets out a small
sigh of frustration. Monica looks at him from the corner of her eye,
but doesn’t say anything.
EXT. DOGGETT’S HOUSE – 5:30 PM
The sun is nearly set, allowing the multi-colored
Christmas lights on Doggett’s house to shine brightly.
Brad’s car pulls up behind Scully’s in the driveway.
He puts the car into park and looks over at Monica with a smile. She
does not meet his look.
(to self/in another place)
Brad looks away from her and lets out another
sigh. He’s trying to get used to her gift, but he can’t keep himself
from wishing it would go away so things could return back to how they
used to be.
(after a beat)
Worried John’s mother’s going
to give you a hard time?
He hopes that’s what her “oh no” is referring
Not John’s ma I’m worried
about. They couldn’t make
it. (beat) It’s Dana.
Monica raises her arm and points toward John’s
front door just as Margaret Scully angrily exits the house. Scully
follows behind her.
Scully is dressed in nice dress pants and a
short-sleeve, brown, turtleneck sweater. Her hair is down, settling
just above her shoulders.
Mom! Don’t just walk away from
me when I’m talking to you!
What do you want me to say?
(beat) I thought you and that
John broke up.
Brad and Monica get out of the car and make
their way to the house. They stop short when Dana and Maggie’s argument
Who told you that?
No one. I figured this thing you have
with him would have been over by the holidays.
Well, mom, it isn’t. Can you please
understand that John and I are in
a serious relationship.
And what do you define as serious?
Are you engaged to him just so you
can wear a diamond ring?
Monica and Brad quietly walk in between the
two of them. Scully nods her head and forces a smile at them, then
returns her attention back to her mother.
Mom, I’ve changed a lot in the past
few years. I could care less about
diamond rings as long as I feel loved
by the man I’m with.
And what horrible thing has he
done that you don’t want your
family to find out about?
John’s a good man. There’s nothing
wrong with being in love and understanding
each other. That’s more than I ever received
from you or anyone else in the family.
In the background, Monica knocks on the door
and looks at Brad nervously. She’s feeling the raw emotion Scully’s
going through. She lowers her hand from the door. It is shaking uncontrollably.
Brad looks at her with worry. He doesn’t know what else to do, so
he takes hold of her hand and gives it a gentle squeeze.
He’s more of a family to me
than you’ve ever been...
He’s more of a family to me
than you’ve ever been.
Brad glances back at Scully, realizing Monica’s
saying what Dana says before she says it. The front door opens and
John smiles at them, but his smile quickly fades to worry and concern
when he sees Scully.
He lets me know it’s all right when
things that still bother me come up.
He holds me and loves me-
Scully starts to say what Monica said, only
she can continue on to finish the thought.
Make it stop... make it go away...
Doggett looks at Monica with concern.
Mon’, it’s all right.
Monica nods her head and hands John the plate
of cookies so she doesn’t drop them. He takes it and places his hand
on her upper back and leads her inside his house.
I’ll get you something to drink.
INT. DOGGETT’S HOUSE – CON’T
Doggett shuts the door, but lingers a beat on
Scully. He’s worried for her. She and her mother have been arguing
ever since Maggie arrived.
Monica slowly walks into the living room where
Melissa Scully and Bill Scully Jr. are seated. Her eyes are lowered.
Your parents aren’t here?
No. My Pa didn’t want to
make the long travel, so
they stayed in Texas.
Brad nods his head.
(quietly to self)
Pain, regret, every emotion. Thousands
of them. Always screaming. Can’t make
out a single one.
Monica winces and covers her ears with her hands,
wanting more than anything to hear only silence.
(suddenly the only voice she hears)
Why do we bother going on like this?
You’re only getting worse. Why couldn’t
you have just taken the medication?
Monica looks up. The whole room seems to have
froze in time. Everyone looking down except for Brad, who looks right
in her eyes from across the room.
She can feel him. Anger, resentment, disappointment.
She blinks and the room returns back to life.
She looks at Brad, who is across the room greeting Bill and Melissa.
He shakes Bill’s hand and talks to them, completely unaware that Monica
is watching him.
Doggett comes up to Monica with a glass of water.
Here ya go.
Monica takes the glass of water and takes a
long drink. She smiles at him appreciatively.
You doin’ all right?
She nods her head.
How’s the teaching going for ya?
Good so far. It’s a small class.
Suddenly, the door flies open and then slams
shut. Scully enters the house and angrily walks into the living room.
She is furious with her mother. She sits on the couch. She lets out
an angry sigh.
Monica winces, feeling Scully’s anger.
Bill, Missy, mom wants to leave
to head over to Mr. Covarrubias’s.
(beat) She wants you to go with her.
Bill and Melissa exchange looks and stand up.
Yet another Christmas ruined.
Melissa, go try to calm mom down.
Melissa nods her head and leaves the house.
Dana? John? Could I speak with
you for a moment?
Scully rolls here eyes and stands up and goes
to him. She’s expecting the worst – a rehash of what her mother has
already done to ruin things. John approaches them. Scully wraps her
arms across her waist.
John, I’d like to thank you for
inviting us all over here in an
attempt to get to know each other.
I appreciate it. I can’t even remember
the last time my family spent a nice
You’re welcome, though I don’t think
it was all that successful.
Bill pats John on the back appreciatively.
Just stop it, Bill. I don’t need
to hear you defend mom-
- I didn’t call you over here to
fight. And I’m not defending mom.
(beat) I want you to know that I
like John and that I’m going to
talk to mom tonight about the
way she’s treated him and you.
Bill smiles. Scully isn’t sure what to think
of this. Bill has never liked any of her friends. Of course those
friends were Mulder and Krycek, and the last man she was with was
She’ll never listen. Try all you want.
Don’t tell me you don’t
believe in miracles.
Gave up on that a long time ago.
Bill glances at John and then back at Dana.
Some people say finding your
soul’s mate is a miracle.
Scully is quiet. She doesn’t know what to say
to this. Doggett eyes them both, unsure of how their sibling relationship
is. He senses the tension between them, but also the longing to be
(after a beat)
I better get going.
Missy and I will stop by
sometime tomorrow, all right?
Merry Christmas, Dana.
Bill bends down and gives her a small kiss on
He pulls away and smiles at her, then heads
out the door.
Doggett places his hand on Scully’s shoulder
as she watches her brother walk down the driveway to his car parked
in the street.
Scully sighs and closes the door.
I’m ok, John.
She turns and smiles at him, just as loud persistent
knocking pounds on the door.
The boys are here.
Scully opens the door to see Mulder and Krycek.
They look excited. A little too excited. Among them also is Knowle
Rohrer. He is clobbered by Mulder in a “holiday hug”.
HO! HO! HO! MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
Scully and Doggett smile at them.
Merry Christmas, boys.
Come on in.
The boys come in and Doggett shuts the door
behind them. Knowle manages to peal Mulder off of him.
(to Doggett and Scully)
Was that Billy J. I saw leaving?
My brother, Bill?
Mulder and Krycek nod their heads together.
Oh pooh! We missed him!
Dammit! I wanted to pull out
my “who shot J.R. joke”.
The boys enter the living room. Krycek sits
down in a chair across the room from Monica and Brad.
Hey there, sexy.
Brad winces. Why does he continue to say these
Monica watches Krycek from across the room.
Does he realize how ridiculous he sounds? Krycek winks at her.
(seductive; to Monica)
How you doin’?
Monica looks at him. She’s not amused with how
he treats her. Suddenly, the whole room falls silent, and time seems
to freeze. Krycek continues to look her in the eyes.
(the only voice Monica hears)
I only act this way to hide the
guilt I have for what I’ve done.
Monica blinks and everything returns back to
normal. Krycek is completely unaware that she just tapped into his
Mulder sits down next to Monica. He looks at
her with a strange bug-eyed, yet very concentrated, look on his face.
No one knows yet, but I’m
gonna be Santa this year.
Mulder smiles at her and then looks away. Does
he know she just “heard” his thoughts? Is that what he wanted? Or
was it like with Brad and Krycek – they don’t know. Mulder winks at
Monica and then gets up. She smiles at him. Yep. He wanted her to
So can we go caroling tonight?
Buddy barks with excitement, then continues
to bark out “Jingle Bells”. Everyone looks at him and his tail wags
I’ll go sing to people. You know,
I am recording a new CD.
Everyone looks at him. He’s recording a what?
(re: everyone’s looks)
What? Didn’t you know? I’m
a musical genius.
Unfortunately, he thinks that’s true.
What do you mean “unfortunately”?
You keep me up at night.
No I don’t.
Yes you do.
No I don’t.
Yes you do.
No I don’t.
Yes you do.
Let’s hear one of your songs, Pee Wee.
Krycek looks over and glares at Knowle. Scully
Yeah, I want to hear one too.
Yeah Alex. Let’s hear a song.
Are you guys sure about that?
Fine! I’ll sing a damn song!
Krycek stands up and clears his throat.
This is called “Bat Poop Eyes”.
Krycek clears his throat, then starts to sing
a song that starts off soft and lyrical.
Your eyes, so dark and sexy.
But you don’t know why they’re waxy.
You don’t know what they came of.
Oh if you only knew, you’d throw up.
Oooooh oooooh oooooooooh...
In the next verse, the song starts to pick up
and he “scream sings”. Sort of like Adam Sandler singing in “The Wedding
Singer” and kind of like Richard Patrick of the band Filter.
But you don’t know that your eyes
Are made of bat poop
In your eyes.
You don’t know!
You don’t know!
(slows down and returns to soft)
You don’t know... your eyes are bat poop eyes...
Everyone exchanges looks and wince in pain.
He’s recording a CD of this crap?
The mascara you buy
If you only knew...
Ooh ooh ooh...
You’d never wear your black lashes again
She wears bat poop eyes...
She wears bat poop eyes...
Bat poop eyes...
Bat poop eyes...
Oooooh yeah... bat poop eyes...
In her eyes...
She’s got bat poop eyes...
Krycek stands for a beat and smiles, finishing
his song. Everyone looks at him. How do they respond to that?
After a beat, Scully starts to clap. Everyone
joins in, not wanting a crazy, mad, rampage of Alex Krycek.
That was... interesting.
Yeah Alex. Who knew you could... write.
He’s got potential. He’s a little
off in his subject, but aren’t all
artists like that?
He looks at Monica doubtful. Krycek isn’t an
Everyone has their own style of art.
True. (beat) Pee Wee, what kind
of instruments will accompany the song?
One, stop calling me Pee Wee! Punk!
Krycek sits down and glares at him.
I’ll be playing the pots and pans
from the kitchen to accompany the
louder, faster parts of the song.
For the slow parts, it’ll be only
my musical voice.
Pots, pans and a cappella.
My name isn’t Acappella, it’s Alex.
Knowle looks at him with a blank expression.
He doesn’t know what “a cappella” is?
Musical genius. Right.
You see now. He keeps me up
at night. And then Spender blames
me for all the noise that happens.
All the musical geniuses have
to practice to keep up with their
He sits proudly.
Anyway... how about we put in a
movie for you boys to watch.
Is dinner almost ready?
Working on it.
(to Knowle; better than you)
Alex. Really. Grow up.
Yeah, Alexander. Especially
since you cook too and watch
the cooking network.
“The Iron Chef” is hot!
Yeah well, you only say
that because you really
don’t know what “The
Iron Chef” is. And it’s not
what you think, either.
Yes I do.
No you don’t.
Knowle leaves the room, not wanting to hear
another “Yes-No” argument.
Yes I do.
Then what is it?
Porno in the kitchen.
He looks over at Monica and winks.
Sasha... “The Iron Chef”
is a Japanese male chef
who has contestants come
on his show and they compete
to see who is the best.
Monica gets up and leaves the room, going into
the kitchen to be at a mature level of thought and conversation.
Let’s take John’s advice and
watch a movie while we wait
We could watch my Blockbuster
hit, “Robot 2000”.
Mulder hits him in the back of the head.
No. We have to watch a Christmas
movie. It’s Christmas Eve, not...
Blockbuster-Flop Movie Night.
Mulder goes over to John’s TV and VCR and puts
in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”.
Meanwhile, in the kitchen...
Monica quietly sits down at the kitchen table.
Doggett and Knowle don’t notice her, their backs are to her as they
work on preparing dinner.
Why couldn’t Shannon come tonight?
She’s spending Christmas somewhere else.
You two have a fight or something?
Either you have a fight or you don’t.
We broke up.
Doggett stops opening cans of corn and looks
at Knowle, who continues chopping a tomato.
(after a beat; shocked)
Things weren’t workin’.
What did you do?
It wasn’t just me.
Doggett turns back to his can of corn.
Shan’ met some other guy. And
I have... feelings for someone else.
Doggett stops what he’s doing again.
Monica looks up from the table at him. Once
again, the entire house falls silent. Knowle looks into her eyes.
(the only voice she hears)
I’m always here for you, Monica.
She looks into his eyes, feeling that he means
what he says. There are no doubts. He’ll do anything for her.
Monica blinks and the world returns to normal.
What do you mean “no one”?
(beat) C’mon, Knowle.
She’s no one you know.
Knowle nervously rubs the back of his neck.
Doggett looks at him.
Now I know you’re lyin’ to
me. (beat) You’re doing the
nervous neck scratch.
Knowle stops, realizing he’s right.
Oh god no!! Hide me!
Mulder and Scully run into the kitchen.
Doggett and Knowle turn around. Scully hides
behind Doggett and Mulder clings onto Knowle.
Help me! Hide me! Save me!
Knowle looks towards the living room to see
Krycek going to open the door.
In the living room...
Krycek opens the door to see a short, young,
blond woman. He smiles at her à la the hunky punk.
Hey baby, how you doin’?
Ew! Gross! It’s Ratboy.
Krycek wrinkles his little nose. Did she just
say “Ew! Gross!” about the hunky punk? About da man? No. It couldn’t
be. Is this the dreaded Leyla Harrison who has stalked Mulder and
Scully onto the Goofy
Who you callin’ “gross”, bitch?!
I don’t like you. I’m here
to see my favorite loving
couple, Mulder and Scully.
(beat) I have a present for them.
Whatever. They’re in the kitchen.
Leyla enters the house. She looks at Brad and
You’re slimy. Stay away from Moronica,
I’m getting into DRR now.
Brad looks at Krycek.
(couldn’t understand her)
What did she say?
Krycek shrugs his shoulders. He doesn’t know.
Leyla makes her way into the kitchen to find
Doggett and Knowle standing straight and stiff. On Knowle’s shoulder,
we see a hand clutching on for “dear life”. Monica sits at the table
watching. Mulder and Scully are not seen.
Dogbert, where’s Mulder and Scully?
The name's Doggett, not Dogbert.
Leyla looks over at Knowle and screams.
Oh my god! You’re a Super Soldier!
(from behind Knowle; enlightened)
(from behind Doggett)
Shut up, Mulder.
(from behind Knowle)
Owie. You hit me.
(from behind Doggett)
Just shut up!
Oh my gosh! Is that the loving
sounds of my MSR?
She starts to come up to Doggett and Knowle,
who start to lean back, trying to get as far away from her as they
can without stepping on Mulder or Scully.
(scared; squeaks; behind Knowle)
Oh no! HIDE ME!
Knowle rolls his eyes and looks back at Mulder.
I was until you started talking.
Way to go, Mulder.
Oh my gosh! You so love each other.
Come out Mulder and Scully. Get away
from these mean, mean, meanies.
(from behind Knowle)
Do you think she’ll go away
if we don’t move? Like a T-Rex?
I have a present for you two.
(from behind Knowle)
Go away! Mulder’s not here!
Look, Ms. Harrison, it’s obvious
no one is thrilled to have you here-
(from behind Knowle)
-To say the least!
So how about you just leave
and go spend Christmas Eve
with your family. All right?
You better get away from Mulder’s
Scully or else he’ll get you, Dogbert!
Brad and Krycek enter the kitchen to see what
is going on.
And here I thought she was
just a myth.
Leyla turns to face him.
Go away! You killed Luke and
tried to steal Moronica away
from Dogbert. You know, they were
having an affair in New York.
John, you know that psychological
evaluation that’s required for
Remind me when we get back
in the office to set her
up for one of those.
Leyla turns to face Monica.
You’re too happy for the show.
(from behind Knowle)
What show is she talking about?
(after a beat)
Whatever... Ms. Harrison, no one
wants you here. Your aura is very
dark and murky. Please leave.
You smile too much too. I don’t
like you. You’re a flake.
No she’s not.
Scully nudges Doggett and whispers:
See Johnny. I’m tellin’ you.
He likes her.
Of course he does. They’re friends.
More than friends.
She nudges him again.
Oh what do you know, you stupid
Super Soldier! You’re only programmed
to kill people! But you wait and see!
Scully’s Mulder will get the better of you!
(mad; from behind Knowle)
Mulder comes out of hiding and marches up to
Leyla. She smiles at him.
Out! I want you out!
But I wrote a smut MSR fic for
you and Scully.
I don’t care! I’ve had enough!
Stop trying to ruin Christmas!
George Lucas did that last year,
and I won’t have it again this year!
Mulder takes her by the arm and leads her out
of the house.
But my fic is about how you
got Scully pregnant!
Mulder opens the front door and pushes her out
of the house.
He slams the door on her face and locks it.
Everyone has followed him out of the kitchen.
Scully runs up to Mulder and hugs him. Through
the window Leyla squeals in excitement. Scully sees her and pulls
away from Mulder.
Good lord, she’s squealing.
I could take care of her.
Krycek heads to the door, pulling a gun out
of the back of his pants. Mulder grabs him.
NO KILLING, ALEX!! Marita
Fine... have it your way...
But the next time she gets
like this, don’t be comin’
to me to fix it.
A buzzer from the kitchen goes off, catching
That would be dinner.
He smiles at everyone.
HOORAY! Finally, we can eat!
TIME CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT’S HOUSE – 9:30 PM
Mulder and Krycek are falling asleep on the
living room floor in front of the TV, which is playing the end of
“Home Alone”. They had a little too much Christmas Eve turkey. Scully
is on the couch with Doggett, and is resting in his arms, her head
on his chest. Next to them is Monica, who is looking tired and somewhat
cold as she huddles in the corner of the couch. Brad is in a chair
next to the couch watching the movie. Knowle is in another chair dozing
off. Buddy is sleeping in Knowle’s lap.
The movie ends and Brad looks over at Monica.
Her eyes want to shut.
I think we better get going.
(beat) Seems like the turkey
is kicking in on everyone.
Scully smiles at her.
I know I’ll sleep good tonight.
You know, you’re welcome to
stay over tonight.
I know... but all my presents are
at my apartment. Don’t want to make
a double trip.
Doggett nods his head.
Brad and Monica get up.
Thanks for having us over, John.
What time are you coming
What time are presents being opened?
Well, if Mulder and Krycek come
when they want to, it could be three
in the morning.
Oh no it won’t.
We weren’t gonna sleep tonight.
But then Santa can’t come.
You already know the truth about
Santa, you dork.
Better watch it, Alex. He knows
when you’ve been naughty or nice.
Mulder and Krycek get up off the floor.
Man, I’m gonna sleep so good tonight.
She slowly gets up from the couch. Doggett follows.
Everyone heads over to the door to get their coats.
Monica goes over to Knowle, who has fallen asleep
now. She gently places a hand on his shoulder.
His eyes slowly open and he smiles at her.
Everyone’s heading home, sleepy.
What time is it?
Nine-thirty. (beat) Buddy’s
She looks down at Buddy, so does Knowle. He
smiles and gently wakes the little dog up. Buddy looks up with sleepy
I’ve got to get goin’ little guy.
Buddy yawns and slowly gets off of Knowle’s
lap, and Knowle gets up out of the chair. He and Monica head over
to the door where everyone is leaving.
Scully kisses Doggett on the cheek.
I’ll see you tomorrow.
All right. Drive carefully.
Scully leaves. Mulder and Krycek come up to
Ok, so we’ll be over at three
to get started with the presents.
And the cookies.
No, you won’t be coming over
at three. If I see you here at
three, there will be no Christmas.
What time should we come?
Eight o’clock?! What are you kidding me?
Christmas is halfway over by then!
Doggett looks at them. Why do they say the same
thing at the same time all the time...
Eight o’clock or no Christmas.
The boys lower their heads and turn away from
Mulder’s eyes land on Monica and Knowle, who
happen to be standing under a mistletoe.
Mulder points at Knowle and Monica. He always
gets excited about mistletoe time during Christmas. Knowle has “froze”
in place, halfway putting his jacket on and looks at Mulder. The outburst
Poor Monica has to kiss him.
Monica gives him a look.
She goes up to Knowle and gives him a small
kiss on the lips.
Monica pulls away from Knowle and smiles at
Ok! My turn!
Krycek runs up, as if he’s about to push Knowle
out from underneath the mistletoe, but Knowle stops him with his hand.
You’re coming tomorrow, right?
Mon’, you coming?
Monica turns to see Brad waiting outside by
Yeah. Just getting my coat on.
Monica makes her way to the door and leaves
with Brad. Knowle goes up to Doggett.
See you tomorrow morning.
Knowle pats Doggett on the back and leaves.
Doggett shuts the door behind him then goes into the living room.
At last... the house is quiet. No more Mulder
and Krycek running around on a sugar high. He can finally relax and
hope the boys don’t come over at three in the morning.
Doggett goes over to his Christmas tree and
unplugs the lights. He looks down at Buddy who is curled up underneath
You stayin’ down here, Bud?
Buddy gets up and shakes his body to wake himself
up enough to walk up the stairs with Doggett to go to sleep.
Doggett and Buddy head up the stairs. Doggett
turns the lights off as he goes.
INT. BEDROOM – CON’T
Buddy runs into the room and jumps up on the
bed, making himself comfortable at the end. He closes his eyes to
Doggett goes over to his closet to get his Marines
T-shirt. He stops when he sees Luke’s ashes sitting on the top shelf.
He reaches up and takes the small wooden box down and goes over to
his bed and sits on the side.
His eyes look down in sadness at the inscription
on the box. Luke would be about twenty years old this Christmas if
he were alive. Twenty years old, and all that is known to Doggett
is the first seven years. He wipes away a single tear that falls as
his hand caresses over Luke’s name. If only he were still here. If
only things were different. Doggett’s mind can’t help but think of
the “what ifs” of the situation that happened so long ago.
Off his thoughts of what could’ve been...
INT. BEDROOM – 7:00 AM
The early winter morning light seeps through
light yellow drapes. We do not recognize the interior of this room.
We have never been here before, yet we feel comfortable, at home,
as if we have been here many times before.
We pan down and pull away from the window to
reveal Monica. She is asleep in a comfortable, king size bed. White
sheets are pulled up to her chest and a pastel yellow comforter lies
across the lower half of her body. She is at peace.
Monica’s eyes slowly open and a smile forms
on her face. This morning, unlike others, she does not hear or see
the dead who have not crossed over. She does not hear the thoughts
of anyone. She feels perfect, as if nothing has happened to her. Nothing
As Monica becomes fully awake, she realize that
she does not know where she is. Suddenly, a man’s strong hand gently
caresses her bare arm and warm lips kiss the back of her neck. The
man’s arm wraps around her and gently pulls her into his bare chest,
which is when she realizes she’s not wearing pajamas.
As awkward as it is for her to be in this situation,
she feels comfortable.
He nuzzles his face into her neck. He kisses
her skin softly.
I don’t know where I am.
This isn’t her apartment. This isn’t his apartment.
What the hell is going on?
Knowle lifts his head from the pillow and looks
down at her. She turns over onto her back and looks up at him, making
sure to hold the sheets close to her so not to reveal herself to him.
He smiles at her, not sure what she’s up to,
but it must be some sort of game. He leans down and kisses her. She
doesn’t pull away from him right away, as his kiss gives her some
kind of comfort, yet she’s still confused.
Knowle, I don’t know what’s going on.
Is this some sort of game?
(at a loss)
No, Knowle. It’s not a game.
What the hell is going on here?
Knowle looks at her, seeing that she’s serious
and freaked out about something.
What do you mean?
Why am I here, in this bed,
with you... (whispers) naked?
She looks up at him with confusion.
Well... you’re my wife.
Monica eyes widen.
We’ve been married for
about five years. (beat)
You don’t remember?
He looks at her with concern. What is going
No. What I remember was Brad
taking me home last night, and
then crying myself to sleep because
I couldn’t stop the voices. (beat)
Which I don’t hear anymore... Then
I woke up here, next to you. I don’t
know where I am. I don’t know this
place, and I don’t remember marrying you.
Knowle looks at her for a beat.
Knowle, you’re going to have
to explain everything to me.
I honestly don’t know what’s
going on here.
She looks up at him. He sees that she is serious.
I’m not married to you, Knowle. I’m
not married at all because I’m not
ready for that. So how is it possible
that we’ve been married for five years?
Yes, Knowle. I’m serious.
Did you hit your head?
He gently looks her head over with his hand.
She must’ve hit her head. There’s no other reason for her to not know
what is going on in their life.
I didn’t hit my head. I know who
I am. I know who you are. I just
don’t know what is going on.
Knowle nods his head. He doesn’t understand
it, but she seems to be serious.
How did we happen?
You were leaving New York and came
to D.C. because you didn’t know what
to do about an your ex, Brad.
Ok, I know this story. Then
I decided to go to New Orleans, right?
You thought about it. But then I
said something about how running
away won’t solve anything and you should-
-Follow my heart. I remember. But
I didn’t listen and I went to New Orleans.
Knowle shakes his head.
No, you didn’t run to New Orleans.
You quit the FBI, and became a
Spanish teacher and stayed in D.C.
When was this?
Back in 1998.
This means I never met Robert Comer...
Monica thinks back to yesterday evening when
she thought about how she wished she never met Robert Comer.
(after a beat)
When did we start dating?
Spring of 1999. Engaged in 2000,
married in the spring of 2001.
Monica nods her head. How is any of this possible?
Her eyes lighten up, as if coming to a revelation.
Knowle, what if this is some sort
of “It’s A Wonderful Life” kind of
thing. What if, for some reason, I’m
being shown what life with you is like?
She thinks fast. Why? Why would any of this
But why, Knowle? Why would I be
given a chance to see what life
would’ve been like with you?
I don’t know...
It doesn’t make sense.
She looks at Knowle for a beat.
(after a beat)
You love me.
Of course I do.
No, no... not in this alternate
world... in the world I know.
She sits up, holding the sheets close to her
chest. Knowle watches her.
It makes sense to me now.
She looks down at Knowle.
I heard you think that you’ll
always be there for me. It
was in your head, as if you
don’t want me to know how
you feel... or something.
You heard me think that?
Yes. In the world that I
know, I can read people’s minds.
Knowle looks at her for a beat.
You know you sound-
-Crazy? I know. This is all
crazy. But I’m not crazy. I
mean, for all I know, this is
a dream and I’ll wake up in the
morning and none of this will
have ever happened. (beat) Or
maybe this is some Christmas wish.
Yesterday I thought to myself how
life would be better if I never
met this guy I dated in New Orleans.
For that to have happened, I never
should’ve gone down there in the first
place. Just like you described to me.
So what you’re saying is that fate was
tampered with? Is that what’s going on?
(after a thoughtful beat)
Maybe. What if I was never supposed
to go to New Orleans in the first place.
What if I’ve been going down the wrong
road all this time. (beat) That would
mean I’m being given the chance – the
opportunity – to fix where I went wrong.
But you haven’t gone wrong here.
Monica thinks. He’s right. Maybe she’s wrong.
Then what is this world? What’s going on? Why is any of this happening.
Listen, Sunshine, how about we
get up, have breakfast and see
if we can figure out what is
going on, ok?
You’re going to call the men
in the white coats, aren’t you?
Knowle laughs quietly at her and sits up to
be face to face with her.
No, I’m not. I’ve heard crazier
things come out of you.
He kisses her on her forehead. She smiles at
Crazier like telepathically
talking to your Grandmama.
But I can.
Knowle gets up out of the bed, and is completely
naked. Monica blushes and looks away, but manages one last glance
as Knowle puts on his sweat pants. She tries not to grin.
Knowle smiles at her as he leaves the room to
give her privacy, shutting the door behind him.
Monica looks around the room. There’s no way
all of this could be an elaborate joke. This room looks nothing like
her apartment or Knowle’s. She sees her things mixed together with
Knowle’s. Everything blends in so naturally.
INT. BEDROOM – 7:30 AM
Doggett sleeps in bed, however, he is not sleeping
like the usual bed-hog we are used to. In fact, his comforter is white
instead of the brown he usually has. The room is lighter and, well,
is not the room we are used to seeing him in.
A woman’s hand gently touches his back, waking
John... wake up.
John rolls over, still half asleep.
Wha-? Are Mulder and Krycek
Who’s Mulder and Krycek?
Doggett’s eyes suddenly pop open when he realizes
who the woman is: Barbara, his ex wife. He sits up fast and looks
Barbara? What are you doing here?
Barbara looks at him. What’s this about?
I’m waking you up, John. It’s
Christmas morning. Luke and Kaylee
are on their way over to open
presents with us.
John, what’s wrong?
Doggett looks around. He recognizes the place,
but why would either one of them be here. He’s in the house he and
Barbara lived in before Luke died and before the divorce. He’s in
Long Island, New York now.
Doggett looks at her for a beat. If he says
what he’s thinking, he’ll look crazy.
I uh... Sorry, I just had
a strange dream.
Well get up. They’re on
their way over.
Barbara leaves the room. Doggett gets up and
looks at himself in the mirror that is across the room. Ok, he doesn’t
look any younger than he should. How is it Luke is alive? This has
to be some strange Monica Joke or something. That’s the only explanation.
Doggett goes over to the phone and dials Monica’s
cell phone number. He’ll confront her on this and the joke will be
ELECTRONIC VOICE (FILTER)
We’re sorry, the number you are trying
to reach is no longer in use or is out
of the calling area. Please hang up
and try again.
Doggett looks at the phone. What the hell is
going on here? He hangs up and tries Dana’s phone number. She’ll be
sure to crack and let him know what’s going on.
He gets the same message as before. He hangs
up and sits on the bed.
What is he in? An episode of “The Twilight Zone”?
He leaves the bedroom and walks down the hallway.
INT. HALLWAY – CON’T
He stops when he sees family photos lining the
wall. He looks at them closely and sees a photo of himself, Barbara
and Luke. Luke must be in his early teens in the photo. How is this
possible? What is going on? He continues to look at the photos. Photos
of Luke from when he was a baby, he recognizes those, but then he
sees more of when Luke got older. He takes a photo of Luke off the
wall. He is standing next to a girl who wears a red dress. Luke is
dressed up as well. Must be a photo of him going to a school dance
with his girlfriend.
Doggett puts the photo back on the wall and
makes his way down to the kitchen.
INT. KITCHEN – CON’T
Barbara is cutting oranges, preparing to make
fresh squeezed orange juice for breakfast. The smell of blueberry
muffins fills the air.
Could you build a fire?
Doggett leaves the kitchen and goes over to
the front closet and retrieves his jacket. He looks around the foyer
and living room. This is all too strange for him. It must be a strange
dream. It has to be. He and Barbara sold the house after the divorce.
Neither one of them wanted to live here after Luke died. Too many
After a short beat, he leaves the house.
EXT. HOUSE – CON’T
It’s a sunny day, but still a white Christmas.
Fresh snow crunches under his feet from the snowfall that must’ve
fallen last night. A plow drives by, clearing the road. Doggett looks
around. His eyes focus on the street that was just plowed. His memory
fills with Luke and the first time he got to ride his bike alone.
A smile forms on his face.
This is unbelievable. How is this possible?
Doggett goes over to the side of the garage
and uncovers the wood for the fireplace and picks up a few logs. A
car pulling up in the driveway catches his attention and he goes to
see who it is.
A young man gets out of the car. He looks an
awful lot like Doggett, only younger. He waves at Doggett as a young
lady gets out of the passenger side of the car.
Merry Christmas, dad.
Luke comes up to Doggett, who has stopped in
his tracks. He has to be dreaming.
(quiet, barely able to speak)
The young lady comes up to them.
Dad, you remember Kaylee.
Doggett looks at her. No, he doesn’t remember
her, but he probably should.
Merry Christmas, Mr. Doggett.
Let me help you with those.
Luke takes the logs from Doggett.
It’s cold out here, and I’m
sure mom has her famous
blueberry muffins waiting for us.
Doggett looks at him. He’s speechless. Luke
notices his strangeness.
Kay’, go on inside and let
mom know we’re here. We’ll
be in shortly.
She smiles and heads inside. Luke turns to Doggett.
Dad, you all right?
Doggett doesn’t say anything. He goes up to
Luke and hugs him.
(after a beat)
I’m just so glad to see you.
He lets Luke out of the hug and smiles at him.
I saw you yesterday.
Luke smiles at him, really starting to wonder
what is up with him. Doggett wipes a tear away.
I know... it’s just...
He shakes his head. He doesn’t have an explanation
for the way he’s acting that anyone would understand. Luke waits for
him to finish.
It’s freezing out here. We
should go inside.
Doggett walks away. Luke watches him and follows
after a beat.
INT. HOUSE – CON’T
Doggett enters the house, followed by Luke.
I’ll build the fire.
Doggett sits down on the couch, watching Luke
build the fire in the fireplace. In the kitchen he can hear Barbara
and Kaylee talking. He looks around the living room. He can’t believe
what is happening. Has he been given a second chance at life? A second
chance to be with his son and see his life? Why is this happening?
How is it happening? Everything seems to be in the right in this dream.
Is it a dream? Or is it really happening? If this is a second chance
with Luke, then where is everyone else? Where is Dana? What is she
doing in this alternate world? Where’s Mulder? Monica? Brad? Knowle?
He must still be friends with them, even if he is in Long Island.
Barbara and Kaylee come into the living room
with fresh squeezed orange juice and a plate with blueberry muffins.
Breakfast is here.
Luke looks up from building the fire and sees
the muffins. A smile forms on his face.
Fresh out of the oven.
He goes over to the plate of muffins, forgetting
about building the fire. Doggett smiles.
So what did you two do
last night? You certainly
seemed to be in a hurry to leave.
He swallows his food and goes over and puts
his arm around Kaylee.
We just had a romantic evening together.
(doesn’t want to hold it in anymore)
He proposed to me.
He holds out her hand for Doggett and Barbara
to see. Barbara’s eyes light up with excitement. She goes over to
Kaylee and hugs her. Doggett’s smile gets bigger with this news. His
son’s getting married. He gets up from the couch and goes over to
Barbara comes up to Luke and hugs him. She has
tears in her eyes. Doggett watches on. The great unknown of Luke’s
life is happening before his very eyes. A sense of release and closure
washes over him. All his unanswered questions about what could’ve
been are being washed away. He stands back and watches with a small
smile on his face.
TIME CUT TO:
EXT. SKINNER’S HOUSE – 4:15 PM
Doggett and Barbara knock on the door. Christmas
music can be heard from inside the house. A few moments later, the
door opens and Skinner stands there with a Santa hat on his head.
Doggett looks at him with a strange expression.
Why is Skinner his boss in New York City? When Barbara said he should
get ready for his bosses party, this was the last man he expected
to see. Why isn’t he working at Headquarters in Washington, D.C.?
Merry Christmas. Glad you
could make it. Come on in.
Skinner steps to the side to allow John and
Barbara into his house.
INT. SKINNER’S HOUSE – CON’T
The house is alive with people and Christmas
music. Skinner takes their coats.
Make yourselves at home. We’ve
got some eggnog over on the table.
Skinner leaves them to go put their coats in
another room. John and Barbara make their way into the house. Doggett
looks around. He doesn’t know anyone here at all, but assumes they
are all from his office.
On the other side of the room, Doggett’s eye
catches Dana Scully. She’s standing alone near the refreshments.
John, introduce me to some of-
(not paying attention to her)
He leaves her side and makes his way over to
Dana. Barbara watches him. What’s that about? She sees him go over
to Dana. Her mind races with suspicion of his reaction towards this
Across the room...
Doggett approaches Scully.
Scully looks over at him.
Can I help you with refreshments?
No, it’s me. John Doggett.
Oh, yeah. Walter said you
She extends her hand to him.
I’m Dana Skinner. It’s nice
to finally meet you.
Dana what? She’s married to Walter Skinner?
Doggett slowly extends his hand and shakes hers.
How long have you been
married to Walter?
We’ve been married for four years.
Doggett nods his head, then looks up at her.
If he’s going to be stuck living in this life where Dana is married
to Walter, he better make sure she’s happy and better off with him.
Are you happy?
Scully looks up at him with surprise. Who asks
such a question?
Does he make you happy?
Why, who told you?
Who told you I’m unhappy?
(beat) Was it Marita? (beat)
I bet she’d know better than
anyone else. She’s sleeping with him.
Doggett lifts his eyebrows, and just as he’s
about to tell her she can do better, Scully’s mother comes over.
Dana, I was just talking with
Walter and he said that you don’t
think you are ready for children.
That’s between Walter and I.
Well, you’re certainly not
getting any younger, Dana.
And I’m tired of waiting to
be a grandmother again.
Unlike the Scully John knows, she does not stand
up for herself against her mother. Instead, she lets her walk all
over her as if she were a doormat.
I expect to have a new grandchild
in the new year. You don’t want
to have such a huge age gap. And
it’s best to keep Walter as your own
by trapping him into marriage by
having a baby. You know that.
Doggett can’t believe what he’s hearing. Barbara
comes up behind him.
John? Is everything all right?
Doggett turns to look at her. No, everything
is not all right. Since when does Dana let her mother walk all over
her? Since when does she stay with a man who cheats on her? Since
when... since when does any of this happen? What’s going on in the
Yeah... everything is fine.
Off Barbara’s doubtful look...
TIME CUT TO:
INT. JOHN & BARBARA DOGGETT’S HOUSE – 7:30 PM
Doggett and Barbara enter the house. Barbara
is obviously not very happy with John. Skinner’s party wasn’t as merry
has they had expected it to be. Doggett gave obvious special attention
to Scully, making Barbara believe he has been having an affair with
Skinner’s wife, Dana.
Barbara, I’m not having an
affair with her. I was just
concerned for her because-
-Save it John. I’m not stupid.
I can tell you have something
for her. (beat) Besides, it’s
not like we act like husband
and wife anymore.
Doggett doesn’t know what to say to that. He
doesn’t know anything about this world he’s been tossed into.
What do you mean?
Please John, don’t play stupid
with me. (beat) You’re never here.
You work all the time. The only
thing we ever do together anymore
is pay the bills. Take out the garbage.
Water the lawn. (beat) I feel like
we’re turning into roommates who
had a kid together long ago.
Luke’s not a child anymore, John.
(beat) I really don’t see the point
in going on pretending to be in
love. (beat) We’ve drifted apart,
and you don’t even seem to notice.
Doggett takes a step towards her. If he’s stuck
here and can’t have Dana, he should try to fix the problems that have
developed between them.
I don’t want to hear the
excuses anymore, John.
She starts to head up the stairs.
I need to be alone right now.
She turns away from him and walks up the stairs.
Doggett stands there. This is how things really are between them?
He watches her until she is out of view. He returns to the living
room to sort out his thoughts.
Does he even bother trying to fix things? Is
this a permanent thing? Is this a dream? Will he suddenly wake up
and everything will return to normal or is he stuck in this world?
INT. KNOWLE & MONICA’S HOUSE – WASHINGTON, D.C.
– 9:45 PM
Monica and Knowle are sitting on the living
room couch. The living room is decorated for Christmas. The tree is
simply decorated with white lights, pinecones, ornaments, and tinsel.
It’s very earthy and simple.
Knowle is showing Monica photos of their wedding
and “catching her up” on her life in this world.
John was your best man.
Monica smiles as she sees a photo of John with
Knowle, both wearing tuxedos and smiling big for the picture.
John was pretty funny when he
heard about us. He kept sayin’
how we were pulling his leg because
“it’s Mon’ and Knowle”. (beat) He
got used to it. You know how John is.
Yeah. (beat) He probably saw us
how I am with him, huh?
Sibling like? Yeah.
(looking back at photos)
We look so happy.
She stares down at a wedding photo of herself
My mother made the dress?
Monica turns the page in the album. She sees
a young teenage boy standing next to Doggett in a photo. She points
That’s Luke Doggett, John and Barb’s son.
Monica looks up at him in shock.
He’s not in...?
He was murdered when he was seven.
Knowle looks at her with shock.
How did that happen?
He was kidnapped. I worked the case.
(beat) In a way, it kind of built this
tension between John and I. He blamed
me for not solving the case. He blamed
himself. Pushed Barbara away... Are
they still married?
Yeah. Surprising since they married so
young. But they seem to work things out.
Monica closes the photo album and sets it on
the coffee table in front of them. She leans back and lets out a sigh.
Knowle watches her. He really wishes he knew what was going on, but
also knows she’s thinking the same thing.
Everything seems so...
She shakes her head, not knowing the word she’s
looking for. Knowle listens.
(after a short beat)
I mean... Luke’s alive. I’m not
tormented by voices in my head.
Everything seems so perfect this way.
She looks at Knowle for a beat. Looking him
in the eyes. Her mind starts to think why she never saw herself with
him like this before. He’s always been there for her. Through everything.
And knowing now that if she would’ve gone with her gut feeling and
not went to New Orleans, she would be happy like this. In a way, her
heart is aching. She went through so much pain going the route she
took in life. Especially the year of her life she lost at the Facility.
The daughter she and Brad lost, and how that whole situation has ruined
her relationship with him. And feeling what she felt from Brad yesterday
at John’s. It broke her heart. What does she do with that?
Knowle notices her mind thinking.
You look sad.
Just thinking about...
He should know what’s going on in the world
I was just thinking about the
world that I know. (beat) I was
engaged to this man – Brad –
Knowle nods his head and listens.
I was taken against my will to this
government Facility and was tested on
to help find a cure for an alien virus.
Turns out I’m the cure to that. Naturally
immune. I was pregnant when I went there.
They had to force and abortion on me. It-
She chokes back tears.
(after a beat)
It ruined what I had with Brad. (beat)
I heard his mind last night. He had
so much anger and disappointment in me.
She looks into his eyes.
If I ever get back... I...
I don’t know what to do. (beat)
We’re kind of on a break after
I called things off at what was
supposed to be our wedding.
Why’d you call things off?
We lost a child and never dealt
with it. I had my brain cut into
which caused me to hear voices,
see things... we never dealt with it.
He over worked. Thought the easiest
thing to do to fix things was to
make me take medication that didn’t
help at all. (beat) He had good
intentions, I don’t doubt that... but...
She trails off. Realizing what she hadn’t realized
How could I spend my whole life
with someone who doesn’t understand
me? You know? That’s hard. It hurts.
Knowle watches her for a beat.
You need to follow your heart.
Monica smiles. He’s always told her that. Why
hasn’t she ever listened to him? She looks at him again.
Being with you... I... I never thought
of you and I like this before. (beat)
I mean, anyone else would’ve drugged
me or sent me off to some doctors to
be examined for mental illness.
She looks into his eyes.
Yet, here you are. As confused as I am,
but still trying to help me figure
things out. You haven’t given up on me.
I never saw giving up as an option.
Monica looks away and smiles. That’s the best
thing anyone has ever said to her. Especially now.
Knowle watches her, seeing that she appreciates
his words. A tear falls down Monica’s cheek. Knowle wraps his arms
around her, pulling her into him. She allows herself to fall into
him. She feels safe, loved, and at peace with him. He kisses the top
of her head.
You’re going to be all right.
I don’t want this to end, Knowle.
It doesn’t have to. (beat)
You know I love you. Both
in this world and the other.
Monica wipes her tears away and wraps her arms
She stops herself from saying what she wants
to say to him. It’s not this Knowle who needs to hear it...
INT. JOHN & BARBARA DOGGETT’S HOUSE – LONG ISLAND,
NY – 10:00 PM
Doggett sits on the couch in the living room
of his old house. He’s flipping through a photo album of Luke. He’s
looking at a photo of the last family picnic they had with Luke out
at his cabin. He turns the page to see Luke’s eighth birthday party.
Tears sting his eyes as he continues flipping through the album. Seeing
everything that could’ve happened in Luke’s life. As he continues
to flip through the photo album more tears come to his eyes.
For a long time he’s wondered what if. It’s
part of the reason he’s never been able to let go of Luke and accept
that the case may never be solved. Even knowing that the man who hurt
him is still out there in the other world, these photos bring warmth
into his heart, into his soul. He’s wondered for so long, and now
the answers are right in front of him.
The hours tick by and he falls asleep on the
couch. The album rests in his lap and for the first time in a long
time, he falls asleep without thoughts of “what if”...
INT. LIVING ROOM – MORNING – 7:59 AM
Doggett lies on his couch with the photo album
next to him. He wakes up with a start when he hears loud knocking
on the front door. His eyes pop open and he sees his living room,
just as he had left it last night before heading up the stairs to
go to bed.
We recognize everything. The stacks of books
up against the walls. Everything is familiar. We are back at John’s
house in Falls Church, Virginia. The only difference is the amount
of presents under the tree. There weren’t that many the night before...
Today is Christmas Morning.
The knocking comes again. Doggett looks down
at the photo album. He opens it and flips through the pages and finds
the last family picnic with Luke at his cabin. He turns the page,
finding it empty. He slowly closes the album as the knocking comes
Doggett gets up off the couch and Buddy comes
running down the stairs. They both go over to the door and John opens
it to find Mulder and Krycek.
Doggett checks his watch. Eight o’clock on the
How long were you two
waiting out there?
For fifteen minutes.
Doggett laughs and smiles at them.
Well, Merry Christmas. Come
on in. (beat) No one else is
So we still have to wait?
(re: presents under the tree)
Wow-wee! Santa came!
Krycek and Doggett look over at the tree at
all the presents that weren’t there last night.
Krycek’s jaw drops and his eyes bug. How the
How... who... Wha-?
Another knock comes at the door and Doggett
opens it. It’s Scully and Monica.
Merry Christmas, John.
He smiles at them. Everything is back to normal.
He steps to the side to let them in. Scully
kisses him in the doorway.
Monica takes off her coat.
Brad didn’t come with you?
No, I picked Mon’ up. I
had to be there anyway to
give her her medication.
Doggett nods his head. And another knock comes
at the door. Doggett opens it again. It’s Brad.
Merry Christmas, Brad.
Doggett lets him in.
Can we open presents now?
Everyone’s not here yet.
Krycek comes over to him.
Who are we waiting for?
Knowle and Skinner.
Oh posh! We don’t need
that big punk here for Christmas.
Krycek walks off and Doggett rolls his eyes,
just as another knock hits the door.
Doggett opens the door and Skinner smiles at
Ho! Ho! Ho! Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas. Come in.
Skinner enters the house and goes into the living
Scully comes up to Doggett.
(to Doggett; quiet)
John... can I talk to you...
She drags him away from everyone and takes him
into the kitchen.
INT. KITCHEN – CON’T
Scully pulls out a long wooden box from a bag
she brought over. She hands it to him.
What’s this? A Christmas gift?
Someone thought it would make
a good gift. I found it outside
my apartment last night.
Doggett looks at her for a beat, then opens
the box to find a 12 inch sharp knife. He looks up at her with concern.
It came with a Christmas card too.
She hands him a Christmas card. He takes it
and opens it, reading the neatly written handwriting on the inside.
Soon we will be together forever. The steel
of this gift reminds me of how beautiful you are.
Doggett looks up at her with concern.
You stayed there last night
after receiving something
Well, I had a big knife to
defend myself with. (beat)
I think it’s from Scott Williams.
Doggett looks at her for a beat.
Do you remember that letter you
received at my cabin on the fourth
(why is he bringing that up?)
I kept it.
Why, it was probably just
from a secret admirer.
Maybe even the same “secret
admirer” who left this knife.
Scully freezes. She never thought of that before.
Have you called the cops on this?
I don’t think there’s anything
for me to worry about, John.
The note he left with this
knife said “soon we will
be together forever”. (beat)
Dana, I love how optimistic you
are about life, but you gotta
realize that there are dangers in-
-I know all too well about the
dangers in this world, John. (beat)
I’m not going to let Scott take
me down anymore. And I’m certainly
not going let him ruin this Christmas.
She looks at Doggett in the eyes.
I wanted you to know about this
so you would be aware of it too.
(beat) I don’t want to deal with
this alone, Johnny.
Doggett nods his head.
Thank you for telling me.
They are interrupted by the phone ringing. Doggett
smiles at her and goes to answer the phone.
John, I’m gonna be late. There’s
been a wreck on the highway that’s
slowlin’ things down. (beat) I know
the boys are excited about presents, so
don’t wait for me. I’ll be there in a bit.
All right. I know they’re dying
to dive under the tree.
Scully walks by him.
“Dive” is a good word choice.
She winks at him and goes into the living room.
INT. LIVING ROOM – CON’T
Mulder and Krycek are sitting in front of the
Christmas tree. They are too excited about Christmas this year. Krycek
especially. He’s not sure who played Santa. To his knowledge, no one
was planning on doing it. Perhaps the magic of Christmas is true...
So we should warn you guys...
Scully, Monica, Brad, and Skinner listen. What’s
The presents we got for everyone
aren’t going to be here at all.
We had to cancel our shipments because
that crazy Leyla girl said something
about being friends with shippers.
We’re not trusting UPS, DHL, the
United States Postal Service. Nobody.
So instead... we made our gifts.
Oh that’s really sweet.
Doggett comes into the living room.
Well, that was Knowle on the
phone. He said he’s going to
Mulder and Krycek look disappointed. Now they
have to wait even longer to open presents. Eight o’clock was long
(after a beat)
He did say to go ahead
and start without him.
YAY! Let the paper tearing begin!
Mulder and Krycek dive towards the presents.
Scully gives Doggett a look and smiles.
TIME CUT TO:
INT. DOGGETT’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM – 8:45 AM
Wrapping paper covers the floor and all the
presents have been opened. Well, almost all. Scully did manage to
stop the boys from opening presents that are for Knowle.
Scully is wearing a new jacket that Doggett
gave her. She stands in front of the mirror in the foyer admiring
Strange pots and pans noise music is playing
in the CD player... Mulder and Krycek’s presents to everyone...
I feel so sorry for your neighbors.
We wanted to be creative.
Yeah, if you listen carefully,
you can almost tell that we’re
trying to play “Silent Night”.
Kind of an oxymoron, huh?
Mulder and Krycek giggle. Yeah... it is in a
A knock on the door catches everyone’s attention.
Scully turns and opens it to see Knowle.
Merry Christmas. Don’t worry,
I stopped the boys from opening
all your presents.
They dove under there, huh?
Knowle comes in.
Merry Christmas, everyone.
Knowle! We’ve got a present for you!
Oh, he’ll just love it.
Mulder runs up to Knowle and hands him a CD-size
This better not be a single
of “Bat Poop Eyes”.
He takes the present and opens it to find a
CD called “Fox & Alex’s Evening of Pot-Pan Noise”.
Noise on a disk. How thoughtful.
He smiles and Mulder skips off happily.
We’ve got breakfast in
the kitchen if you want.
Sounds great. I actually
brought over stuff to make
my famous Rohrinator Pancakes.
Awesome. That’d be great. I’m
sure everyone will love them.
I thought so too.
Geez! That’s a little egotistical
to name pancakes after yourself.
Knowle rolls his eyes. It’s best to ignore Krycek
when he starts wanting to pick a fight for drama.
I’ll be in the kitchen.
Knowle leaves the living room and enters the
INT. KITCHEN – CON’T
Monica is at the counter making fresh squeezed
orange juice for everyone.
Merry Christmas, Monica.
Monica looks up and smiles at him.
Merry Christmas. (beat) I’d give
you a hug, but my hands are covered
in orange juice.
That’s all right.
Knowle sets his bag of stuff to make Rohrinator
Pancakes on the counter. He goes up to her and gives her a hug from
behind and kisses her on the top of her head. Monica smiles.
She nods her head towards the bag he set on
the counter. Knowle lets go of her.
I’m making the Rohrinator.
Sure you have enough for everyone?
I planned ahead. Don’t worry.
Monica smiles at him.
I saved your present from
the excitement of Mulder
Yeah. It’s over on the table.
Knowle looks over at the table and sees a box
Mind if I open it now?
That’s why I pointed it out.
She smiles at him.
Knowle goes over to the table and picks up the
box. He gives it a little shake. Monica washes her hands over the
sink, getting all the orange juice off of her. She goes over to him
and watches him unwrap it.
He pulls out a photo album. He gives her a look.
A photo album?
Knowle does and sees several old photographs
of when he was a kid in Texas with John, Monica, Shannon and other
childhood friends. A smile forms on Knowle’s face as he sees that
it’s a huge scrapbook of his life as seen through Monica’s eyes.
You were there for that?
He points to an embarrassing high school photo.
Monica smiles and looks at it.
Of course I was.
Knowle looks at her.
You always come up with the
best gifts. You know that, right?
What do you mean?
The gift of wonderful memories.
No one else can match that. (beat)
He sets the album down and gives her another
She gives him a kiss on the cheek.
I love you.
Knowle tries to pull away to look at her, but
she won’t let go of him. He pulls her closer to him, and softly whispers
in her ear.
I love you too.
Off them, we...
