Summary: Scully deals with the aftermath of being at the Facility and decides what she should do now that she has her freedom.

FADE IN:

INT. ST. VINCENTíS HOSPITAL Ė EARLY MORNING
JANUARY 3RD, MONDAY

Krycek is asleep in his hospital bed. He had driven all the way back to Washington last night after being shot by the Cigarette-Smoking Man. He didnít want to bother Dr. Montgomery at the Facility with his problem, so he drove as fast as he could to the only other hospital where he knew there were good doctors. He was delirious by the time he pulled up.

The door to his room quietly opens and Marita steps in. She quietly walks over to his bedside and sits down. She takes off her white winter jacket and pushes it behind her on the chair. Marita leans forward and takes hold of Krycekís hand.

Marita had feared the worst when she got a call from the hospital. Krycek got himself shot, and who knows what else has happened. The worst thoughts kept her awake for hours. What if the Smoking Man is still alive? What would come of Scully and Monica? And what would he do if he found out Marita aided them in escaping? Sheís feared the Smoking Man finding this out and coming to punish her like he did in the past. She never told Alex what she had done. You can never be too careful, the Smoking Man could have her bugged.

She looks up at Krycek when she feels his hand squeeze hers. She smiles at him when she sees that he is awake.

MARITA
(soft)
Good Morning, Sasha.

KRYCEK
(groggy)
I got shot.

MARITA
I know. They called me.
(beat) What happened?

KRYCEK
Son-of-a-bitch shot
me in my gut.

He can read Maritaís expression and knows she wants to know the fate of the Cancer Man.

KRYCEK
Heís dead.

Maritaís whole body relaxes.

KRYCEK
I sent him to where he belongs.
He canít hurt you or Dana ever again.

MARITA
What about Dana and Monica?

KRYCEK
Dana ran into the Bounty Hunter
last night. Itís a good thing I was there.

MARITA
You got the Bounty Hunter, too?

Krycek nods his head.

KRYCEK
And when Cancer Man came in, I
sent Scully on her way to Montgomery.
I assume heís taken her back to
her motherís or something.

MARITA
I donít think sheíd want to go to
her motherís, not after what sheís
been through. (beat) Sheís probably at Johnís.

Krycek nods his head.

MARITA
What about Monica?

KRYCEK
I donít know. Sheís under the
care of Montgomery. Iím assuming
that heís already taken full
control of The Project.

MARITA
Heíll want to keep her there.

Marita looks down.

MARITA
(concern)
Alex, before everything went down
last night, my brain didnít have
time to really register the meeting.

She looks up at him.

MARITA
Dr. Montgomery said that Monica
was exposed to the alien virus.

She swallows.

MARITA
What kind of affects could that
do to her? (beat) I canít remember
all of the details of the virus
and what it does.

Krycek nods his head. In the past, Marita knew more about the virus than he did. However, after the Cigarette-Smoking Man messed with her head, she canít recall every detail. The damage to her has still been done.

KRYCEK
He said she survived. Iím guessing
there was a lot of pain, but I honestly
donít know what the most up to date
mutated virus can do to a person who is
not given the vaccine.

MARITA
I hope sheís all right.

KRYCEK
Me too...

Krycekís eyes lower as he regrets what he has done to his friends. If John or Brad knew he was responsible for this situation, heíll surely be pounded on. And with the possibility of Scully being back home, heís more than likely going to have it coming to him.

CUT TO:

INT. JOHN DOGGETTíS HOUSE Ė KITCHEN

Scully stands in front of Johnís sink. The water is gently trickling out of the faucet. Scully applies some soap to her hand and tugs on the ring Cancer Man made her wear. She tugs and tugs and tugs, but the ring does not budge.

Buddy watches her from the floor. With every tug of the ring he hopes it comes off too.

SCULLY
(quite)
Dammit.

She tugs again, applies more water and soap and tries again. Frustration sets in. She wants more than anything to get this horrible reminder of that back lunged son-of-a-bitch off her damn finger.

SCULLY
(close to crying)
Come on.

She pulls at the ring very hard.

SCULLY
Ow!

A tear falls down her cheek, not from any pain, but from frustration. John comes into the kitchen doorway.

DOGGETT
Dana, are you all right?

Scully turns to face him with tears in her eyes.

SCULLY
I canít get this off.

Doggett comes over to see whatís going on.

DOGGETT
May I?

He puts out his hand, offering to take hold of hers and get the ring off. Scully places her hand in his. He gently twists the ring and it easily slides off.

SCULLY
Thank you.

Doggett smiles and hands her the ring.

DOGGETT
Youíre welcome.

He turns off the water. He looks at the ring and wonders where it came from. Who gave it to her, and why she wants it off so badly. She didnít talk much last night when she came back into his life.

DOGGETT
Are you hungry?

There is a tension in the room. Both donít know what to say to one another. It has been so long since theyíve seen each other. So much has happened, and John gets the feeling that Dana is avoiding a lot that is on her mind.

SCULLY
No. Iím not very hungry. I
think Iím going to go take
a shower, if thatís all right?

DOGGETT
Go right ahead.

He smiles at her.

Scully sets the engagement ring the Smoking Man gave her down on the counter and heads up the stairs.

Doggett watches her, wanting to know what has happened to her. He feels that she wants and needs his help, but how can he help her if she wonít open up to him?

He hears his upstairs bathroom door close. He looks down and sighs.

All Dana could do last night was cry in his arms. She held him close to her, not wanting to let go for a long time. She didnít say anything about where she was, or what she went through. She only told him the ďtechnical detailsĒ. She worked for this group of men to develop a vaccine against a deadly virus. She had to abort Monica and Bradís child. She had to pretend to test on Monica to keep her alive. She told him everything that happened to Monica, but spoke nothing of what she had personally gone through.

Doggett goes over to his coffee maker and starts to make a pot of coffee. He pours some dog food into Buddyís bowl and gets him some water. John sits down at the kitchen table, listening to the sound of the water running upstairs in the shower. Listening to Buddy crunching the food in his mouth, the sound of the coffee brewing.

He didnít sleep well last night. He let Dana take his bed up stairs while he slept on his couch with a gun near by. He has no idea what is going on. He hasnít slept this bad since being in the Marines with a threat of an ambush at any moment.

The last thing he wants is to loose Dana again.

A few minutes later, Dana comes back down the stairs. Sheís dressed in a pair of Johnís flannel pajama pants and is wearing his tan Marines T-shirt. She walks carefully into the kitchen so she doesnít trip on the long pant legs. John looks up at her from the table.

SCULLY
I feel a lot better.

She smiles at him and joins him at the table. Buddy walks over to Scully and sits next to her. He too does not want Scully to go away again.

DOGGETT
Thatís good. (beat) Iím making
some coffee if you want any.

SCULLY
Thatís all right. I donít need any.

Doggett nods his head.

DOGGETT
Sleep all right last night?

SCULLY
Yes. Much better than I
have in a long time.

Even though she still woke up once in a while with a nightmare of the Cigarette-Smoking Man raping her, or coiling himself around her like a cobra.

Doggett nods his head. He doesnít want to keep this distant ďchit chatĒ conversation between them. Dana means so much to him and he wants to help her. Small talk wonít help.

DOGGETT
Can I ask you something?

SCULLY
Sure.

DOGGETT
I can see that something
has happened to you.

Scully tenses up.

DOGGETT
(nervous)
I donít want to pressure you, but
I want to help you, and if I knew
what happened, I think Iíd be able-

SCULLY
(quick)
-Iím fine.

Doggett looks at her and sees that sheís anything except ďfineĒ. However, he also sees that she does not wish to talk about whatever happened to her. Itís her first day back and is probably too soon to get to the full story of all that has happened to her.

Doggett looks down, feeling bad for prying. He just wants to help her.

Scully notices his expression.

SCULLY
John, itís okay.

He looks up at her with concern, worry and sadness in his eyes.

SCULLY
I just...

She reaches out and holds his hand. She takes a deep breath. She wants to tell him. She wants him to know so she can welcome his help.

But something inside of her stops her.

SCULLY
(obviously covering the truth)
Iím fine.

Fear is what stops her. Fear that John Doggett wonít believe her. Fear that he wonít want to hear it. Fear that heíll turn his back on her like her family did when she was being abused by Scott Williams in high school. Fear that John wonít want to be with a tarnished soul.

Fear, fear, fear. The constant emotion that closes her off. Even when she knows she can trust John. Even when she knows heíd never turn his back on her.

Fear is always there.

CUT TO:

INT. DEPUTY DIRECTOR KERSHíS OFFICE Ė 10:00 A.M.

The Deputy Directorís conference table is occupied by all the Directors of the FBI. Ted Rose, Assistant Director in Charge of OPR, is slouched down in his chair, dozing off. In fact, he has fallen asleep and lets out a few random snoring sounds once in a while. Next to him, to his right, is Skinner who is trying to pay attention to Brad, who is addressing the whole room. Next to Skinner is Simon Turner, A.D. in Charge of Training, who is spaced out and in a world of his own. Kersh, who is next to Simon, is starring down at his wedding ring with a worried expression. Brad is standing in front of everyone discussing the progress of his agents on the x-files.

BRAD
... and since Iíve been heading
the X-Files Division, Iíve made
several observations, that have
clearly gone over the heads of
everyone in this room.

Brad looks around and sees that no one has heard a single word he has said. He pauses and thinks of how he can ďwakeĒ everyone up. He sets down a file folder he was holding in his hand.

BRAD
Meanwhile, Iím quitting the FBI
and putting Fox Mulder in charge
of the X-Files Division because
I believe he is a very capable agent.

Kersh looks up with a strange expression on his face. Could he have actually heard Bradís sarcastic comment?

KERSH
You know... Lindaís contacted
a good divorce lawyer.

He looks back down at his wedding ring with a sad expression. Brad lets out an irritated sigh. Here they go again, another meeting turned into ďpersonal relationship therapyĒ.

BRAD
Sir, now is not the time
to discuss personal-

KERSH
What should I do? I mean...
This is really serious.

BRAD
And so was this meeting until now.

Brad gives him a very disapproving look. Heís beyond sick and tired of every meeting turning into ďpersonal relationship therapyĒ for Deputy Director Alvin Bernie Kersh.

SKINNER
My secretary, Ms. Kim Cook, has
requested a transfer to a new A.D.

Skinner hopes to get things back on the business track. Kersh looks at him.

KERSH
Whatís the matter with
her being your secretary?

SKINNER
Umm... A personal matter, sir.

KERSH
Ok. Who needs a secretary?

All eyes fall on Brad Follmer, the man who hasnít had a secretary in a long time. The one man who actually could benefit from having a secretary because of all the work he does. The one man who actually works.

Kersh smiles.

KERSH
Assistant Director Follmer, you have
a new secretary. (beat) Weíll just
transfer Ms. Cook over to your office.

BRAD
Yes, sir. I could use the help.

KERSH
Good. (beat) If there is nothing else
to discuss, we can call it a day.

BRAD
Actually, I havenít finished my-

KERSH
-Good.

Kersh stands up.

KERSH
Meeting is adjourned. Have
a great day, gentlemen.

Everyone stands up and leaves the office. Brad lets out a sigh and slowly puts all his files back into his briefcase and heads out the door.

Another unaccomplished meeting. Why does he bother trying when no one seems to care?

CUT TO:

INT. BRAD FOLLMERíS OFFICE

Brad enters his office and sets his briefcase down on the floor next to his desk. A red light blinking on his phone catches his attention. He hits the button to play the message.

ELECTRONIC VOICE
You have two new messages. (beat)
First message.

MULDER (ON MACHINE)
Howdy-do-bee-do my brother.

Brad looks down at his phone. Is Fox Mulderís voice slurred? Is he drunk?

MULDER (ON MACHINE)
I wuv you man. Youíre like the
best head honcho dude ever. You
give good advice so I thought I would
call and ask if you think I overreacted
by closing down Super Buddies. I love
Super Buddies and I think I should
keep it going. Love and friendship, man.
Love and friendship. It conquers all, ya know?
(beat) Oh no... I have to go bye-bye now.

The machine beeps indicating the end of Mulderís message.

ELECTRONIC VOICE
Second message.

TED ROSE
Hey, Brad. I mean, Assistant Director
Follmer. This is Assistant Director Ted
Rose up in the Office of Professional
Responsibility, you know, the job you wanted
oh so badly. (laughs) Um... just wanted
to let you know that Agent Krycek has been
shot and wonít be in to work today. See ya.

The machine beeps indicating the end of Tedís message.

BRAD
(re: Tedís message; sarcastic)
You couldnít tell me in the
meeting this morning?

Brad rolls his eyes and lets out an irritated sigh. So Agent Krycek has been shot and is out of the office. Agent Mulder... sounded drunk on his message... this canít be a good thing.

Brad sits down at his desk and picks up his phone and hits a number on speed dial.

DIANA FOWLEY (FILTERED)
Hello?

BRAD
Agent Fowley, this is Assistant
Director Follmer.

DIANA FOWLEY
Yes, sir?

BRAD
I was wondering if you
know anything about Agent
Mulderís condition. I got-

DIANA FOWLEY
(annoyed)
He came home drunk last night
crying about Super Buddies. He
has a hang over and wonít be in
today. Neither will I. Iíll have
to take care of him.

She doesnít sound happy with this situation, or of Mulderís actions.

BRAD
Thatís fine. I was just wondering.
Try to have a good day.

DIANA FOWLEY
Right.

The line goes dead as Diana slams the phone down. Brad looks at his phone and hangs up. Looks like just Agent Doggett will be in today.

CUT TO:

INT. MULDER & KRYCEKíS APARTMENT Ė MULDERíS ROOM

Mulder lies face down on his bed. His hair is a mess, heís still in his clothes from the previous day, and that includes his muddy boots.

Diana stands in the doorway with an angry expression on her face.

DIANA FOWLEY
(loud)
Fox!

Mulder moans and slowly rolls over in his bed.

MULDER
Owie... my head...

He puts his hand on his forehead. Diana comes into the bedroom and stands above him.

DIANA FOWLEY
(annoyed)
Fox.

Mulder squints his eyes and looks up at her.

DIANA FOWLEY
Youíve made a huge mess
of mud all over the apartment
and in the bed. (beat) What
is wrong with you?

MULDER
I watched the squirrels in the park.

Diana isnít amused with him.

DIANA FOWLEY
(mad)
Why?

MULDER
I was upset. (beat) And then
I had a few drinkies at the bar.

DIANA FOWLEY
Oh, so this is the result
of a drunken activity? (beat;mad)
Clean it up. Now.

Diana storms out of the room. Mulder slowly gets out of bed.

MULDER
Okay, honey.

He almost falls when he stands up, but manages to catch himself with a ďwhoaĒ. He goes over to the closet and gets out a bucket. He sits on the ground and takes off his muddy boots, tossing them in the bucket. He starts to pick up the large traces of mud from the floor and tosses them in the bucket.

MULDER
You know, Iíve been thinking...
Maybe I think I may have over
reacted with the whole Super Buddy thing.

He picks up large traces of mud from the bed sheets.

MULDER
(to Diana)
I love Super Buddies. I donít know
if I shouldíve ended it. Do you think
it is too late to call all the news
stations and announce that Super
Buddies is back?

DIANA FOWLEY (O.S.)
(annoyed)
Yes.

Mulder stops picking up the mud on the floor and sits down.

MULDER
Really? Because I donít think
it is. Maybe I should discuss
it with my V.P.

DIANA FOWLEY (O.S.)
Heís not here.

Mulder looks confused.

MULDER
Heís not?

DIANA FOWLEY (O.S.)
I donít know where he is.

MULDER
Hmm... I wonder where he could be...

Off of Mulderís pensive expression...

CUT TO:

INT. MARITAíS APARTMENT Ė NOON

Maritaís door opens and she and Krycek enter. Krycek is leaning on Marita for support. Marita shuts the door behind them.

MARITA
Alex, stop being such a
big baby. You can walk on your own.

KRYCEK
But it hurts.

Marita helps him sit down on the couch. She walks away from him and goes into her bedroom. Krycek turns and watches her.

KRYCEK
What are you doing?

MARITA (O.S.)
I need to talk with Dr. Montgomery.

She comes back out of her bedroom dressed in a black business suit. Sheís putting her hair up in a tight bun as she walks to her kitchen.

KRYCEK
What about me?

MARITA
Stay here, and Iíll be back.

Sheís as busy as a mother late for work with a sick child.

KRYCEK
If this is a trick to see
if I really can walk on my
own, I can but it hurts.

Marita comes over to him and sets two extra strength Tylenol pills and a glass of water in front of him. He watches her, and she kisses him on the top of his head.

MARITA
Take those, and Iíll see
you when I get back.

She smiles at him and walks to the door. Krycek watches her leave in confusion. Why does she need to see John Montgomery?

The door closes, leaving Krycek alone.

KRYCEK
(pathetic)
I love you...

The apartment falls silent. Krycek sits alone on the couch, not sure what to do.

CUT TO:

INT. BASEMENT OFFICE Ė FBI HEADQUARTERS Ė 1:22 P.M.

The basement is quiet. A little too quiet. The lights in the hallway are dim, as if no one has been down there. And no one has, until the elevator dings open and Brad Follmer steps out. Heís been up in his office all day and hasnít heard anything from Agent Doggett. Hopefully this isnít another Mulder and Krycek repeat prank to go on another adventure.

Brad cautiously takes another step into the basement hallway as the elevator door closes, leaving him all alone. There is an eerie feeling to the empty hallway.

BRAD
Agent Doggett?

He takes another careful step and listens to the silence. Any moment now he expects to hear the eerie breathing of Darth Vader coming from one of the shadows. Thereís nothing worse in life than an empty, silent, dark basement hallway of the FBI. Heís in Mulder and Krycek ďunchartedĒ territory now.

JANITOR
Iíd be careful if I were you.

The Janitorís voice seems to come out of nowhere from behind Brad. He turns around to be face to face with him.

BRAD
Geez, youíre like a cat. How
did you get down here?

JANITOR
I know this place better
than the architects who
designed this building.
I know everything and more
about every person that works here.

The Janitor smiles, loving how mysterious he can be. He takes a few steps in front of Brad and looks down the long empty hallway.

JANITOR
You know, youíre in their territory.

He turns to face Brad.

BRAD
Excuse me?

JANITOR
Mumbo and Jumbo. (beat) This
hallway is their playground.

BRAD
Playground?

JANITOR
As I said before: be careful.

BRAD
And what exactly do I have
to be careful of? Neither one
of them are around to cause trouble.

JANITOR
Thatís where youíre wrong, Bradly
Markus Westly Follmer.

Brad gives him an odd look. How in the world does this janitor know his full birth name? Even his name plate just says: ďBrad FollmerĒ.

JANITOR
They donít have to be here
to cause trouble. They have
this place rigged with boobie-traps.

The Janitor mysteriously looks down the hallway, like a hunter smelling out the prey.

Brad looks at him with doubt. Mulder and Krycek may be stupid, but they canít be as stupid as this man is saying. They couldnít be so careless to jeopardize their careers by setting up traps in their place of work.

BRAD
Sir, if I may say... I highly
doubt Agents Mulder and Krycek
would rig this hallway with traps.

Brad takes a confident step forward, stepping ahead of the Janitor, and right into the first of many wire traps, and a huge bucket of glitter falls onto him. Brad stands there with a dubious look on his face.

The Janitor calmly leans on his mop.

JANITOR
(humoured)
Yeah, youíre probably right.
They couldnít have be that stupid.

Brad turns around, calmly brushing glitter off of him... the best he can anyway.

BRAD
All right. I was wrong. They are
as stupid as... as... Oh bloody hell!

Frustration is truly hitting Brad today.

JANITOR
I can help you maneuver through
their traps. (beat) They only
think this is their territory.
I work this hallway every day and night.

BRAD
(aggravated)
Splendid. Help me find Agent Doggett.

The Janitor smiles and tosses Brad his mop, and grabs a broom and starts to carefully go down the hallway, waving the broom in front of him.

CUT TO:

EXT. JOHN DOGGETTíS HOUSE Ė 2:00 P.M.

Fox Mulder pulls up in John Doggettís driveway in his red convertible. Donít worry, he knows it is January and has the hood all the way up. He gets out of his car and goes up to the front door and calmly knocks three times.

A few moments later, Doggett opens the door.

MULDER
John, since I canít find my Vice
President of Super Buddies-

DOGGETT
-I thought you ended Super-

MULDER
-Let me explain. (beat) I want
youíre advice about Super Buddies.
I donít know if it was a good idea
to end it, you know? I still support
the idea that love and friendship
conquers all. I canít find Krycek, my
V.P., to discuss this matter with him.
So I thought Iíd ask you since I donít
want to bother Brad at work.

Mulder stops talking immediately when he sees Scully in the background. He freezes momentarily, not sure what to think of this. He just found out that she and Monica are dead, and here she is. Standing there, all fine and dandy. Or is she an angel?

MULDER
(soft; unsure)
Scully?

Doggett looks behind him and see Scully standing a few feet behind him. Scully walks closer to him.

SCULLY
(soft)
Hi.

Sheís unsure of his reaction, but knows that John is here to make sure he doesnít suddenly spazz out and run towards her. Thatís the last thing she would need right now. Scully immediately crosses her arms in front of her, closing herself off as she thinks of how he might react.

Mulder reads into her body language and sees that sheís uncomfortable, but she doesnít want to admit it.

MULDER
Are you really...?

Scully nods her head.

MULDER
How is this... Where have...

Mulder reads into her expression, seeing that she doesnít wish to be bombarded with questions.

MULDER
Itís good to see you again.

Scully smiles uneasily at him, knowing that he probably wants more than anything on this planet to hug her right now. She begins to feel obligated to hug him. She crosses her arms tighter around her body.

Mulder once again, reads her body language.

MULDER
I think I should go. It seems that
Iíve come at a bad time and right
now what I came for isnít as important
as you, Scully. (beat) Iíll let you two be.

Mulder nods his head and turns slowly to leave.

SCULLY
(hesitant; soft)
Itís good to see you too, Mulder.

Mulder turns and nods his head and Scully smiles at him. She wasnít expecting this kind of reaction from him. She expected him to run up to her and squeeze her into a huge bear hug. Itís strange for her to see him with so much respect and understanding for her. Things have changed since sheís been gone.

CUT TO:

INT. JOHN MONTGOMERYíS OFFICE Ė THE FACILITY Ė 3:15 P.M.

John Montgomery sits at his desk typing something on his computer. A quiet knock on his door interrupts him. He gets up and opens his door. Heís surprised to see Marita Covarrubias standing in front of him.

MONTGOMERY
Ms. Covarrubias?

The last time he ever spoke with her alone was when they were working together against the Smoking Man. Then all of a sudden their correspondence stopped.

MARITA
May I come in?

He steps aside and allows her in. He shuts the door behind her. She turns to face him.

MARITA
Alex Krycek told me the
Smoking Man is dead.

MONTGOMERY
He is.

MARITA
Then why must you continue
to hold Monica Reyes here
against her will?

There is a touch of anger in her voice.

MONTGOMERY
Sheís being studied so I can
figure out what makes her naturally
immune to the virus.

MARITA
Studied? What kind of studies?

Montgomery walks over to his desk and sits down. He motions for Marita to sit, but she does not. He continues on.

MONTGOMERY
I believe what Iím looking
for is in her brain.

MARITA
(mad)
Meaning youíre cutting
into her brain? Do you
know what that can do to someone?

Montgomery doesnít respond right away. He sees how angry she is towards this situation.

MONTGOMERY
Yes I do.

MARITA
Then you know you could
permanently damage her.
Change her and her life.

Marita fears the same thing will happen to Monica that happened to her.

MARITA
(determined)
You hold no right to her. (beat)
She was brought here not knowing
what was going on, and then was
held here against her will and
tortured, all in the name of Charles Spender.

She intensely stares at him, not backing down.

MARITA (CONíT)
Your continuing his dirty
work on an innocent person.

MONTGOMERY
(stern)
Without her, the human race
dies on June 11, 2006.

Marita doesnít break eye contact with him. There is a tense moment of silence. She knows heís right, but all of this isnít fair to Monica, or anyone who knows her.

MONTGOMERY
(after a beat)
She stays here. Thatís final.

MARITA
Let me see her.

MONTGOMERY
No. That is out of the question.

MARITA
All I have to do is call my
father and heíll override your authority.

She glares at him. Montgomery looks at her.

MONTGOMERY
Why do you want to see her?

MARITA
Why wonít you let me see her?

She continues her eye contact with him. He sighs, knowing that this could become difficult if she brings Joseph Covarrubias into the picture. He doesnít want to loose his head position on The Project.

CUT TO:

INT. LABORATORY Ė THE FACILITY

Montgomery leads Marita through the laboratory and towards Monicaís cell. Montgomery is hesitant before entering the access code to open her cell. Marita watches him, wondering why heís hesitating. The cell door opens and Montgomery leads Marita into the cell.

The last time Marita saw Monica was on Cinco de Mayo, and already Monica looked ill. Now, she looks worse.

Monica is sitting in the corner of her cell on the cold, hard concrete floor. Her knees are curled up to her chest, her skin is pale, and her hair is cut extremely short. Stitches are visible on the back of her skull. They are fresh.

Maritaís breath is taken away.

MARITA
(quiet)
What have you done to her?

MONTGOMERY
I had orders to proceed with
my tests on her, and I did.

Marita goes over to Monica and kneels down next to her. Monica watches her every move with a look of paranoia in her eyes. Marita slowly, and carefully, places the back of her hand on Monicaís forehead.

MARITA
(mad)
Youíre leaving her in these
conditions with what youíre
doing to her?

She looks back at Montgomery.

MARITA (CONíT)
Sheís sick. Why hasnít she
been taken care of?

MONTGOMERY
Because I just became the head
of The Project today and had
other things to take care of.

MARITA
(strong)
I demand that she be moved to
better conditions if you are
going to continue holding her
here against her will. I donít
think you can afford loosing-

Marita is cut off when she feels Monicaís icy hand grab hers. Marita quickly looks at her with concerned eyes.

MONICA
(worry, quiet)
Theyíre going to get you.

Monica looks at her with desperate eyes of warning.

MARITA
(soft)
What?

MONICA
(quiet)
Donít go near them, or
theyíll get you.

Marita looks at her with worry.

MARITA
Who?

Monica winces in pain and lets go of Maritaís hand. She grabs her head in pain.

Montgomery takes a step closer to see if Monicaís all right.

MARITA
(concerned)
Monica?

Monica looks at her again.

MONICA
(quiet)
When they come... donít
go near them...

Tears fall down Monicaís cheeks.

MONTGOMERY
I think sheís had enough for
one day, Ms. Covarrubias.

Marita doesnít look at him, right now her main concern is Monica. Monica takes hold of her hand again.

MONICA
Tell him not to give up on me.
And tell her to open. She needs to open.

Marita looks at her.

MARITA
By ďhimĒ, you mean-

Monica nods her head and lets go of Maritaís hand. She looks away from her, going back to the dazed, blank expression she had before.

Marita slowly stands up and looks at Montgomery. Heís standing by the door, waiting for her. Marita looks back at Monica, then slowly leaves the cell. Montgomery locks the door.

MARITA
I want her in better conditions.

She turns and looks at him. Her expression assures him he has no choice in this call.

MONTGOMERY
I will.

MARITA
What will happen to her
when you are done using her?

MONTGOMERY
Sheíll stay here, under my care.

MARITA
And then what?

MONTGOMERY
She knows too much-

MARITA
-Thatís not her fault and
she shouldnít be punished for it.

Marita glares at him.

MARITA
For years our group has been
punishing the innocent and Iím
sick of it. Iím sick of all the
suffering that has been going
on. No one deserves this.

MONTGOMERY
Her mind couldnít be erased.

MARITA
(pissed)
Itís no excuse.

She glares at him and storms off towards the exit doors. Montgomery watches her. He agrees with her 100%. No one deserves to suffer, and Monica shouldnít be kept here. But the main fear is exposure. Exposure could ruin everything the group has worked to conceal.

CUT TO:

INT. JOHN DOGGETTíS HOUSE Ė 5:08 P.M.

Scully and Doggett are in the kitchen. Doggett is helping Scully cook a meal upon her request. After having no control in her life for so long because of the Smoking Man, Scully thought that learning how to cook would be a step in the right direction.

SCULLY
So I just sprinkle this
on top of the chicken?

DOGGETT
Yeah, but not too much.
Over seasoning can be awful.

Scully starts to do as he directed.

SCULLY
Just like this?

DOGGETT
Yeah.

Buddy stands up on his hind legs, trying to get a better look.

SCULLY
Buddy, down.

Buddy sits at her feel, hoping something will fall.

SCULLY
So I was thinking that I
want to get back to work
as soon as possible. You
know, to get my life back on track.

DOGGETT
Theyíll probably want you to
go through basic training
at Quantico again.

SCULLY
That sounds good to me. I
want my strength back. (beat)
I was also wondering if you
could help me find a new place
to live. Iím assuming that Marita
has moved out.

Doggett looks at her for a moment. After loosing her one time, he doesnít want to have it happen again and was going to ask her to move in with him.

Dana, having sensed this in John, thought sheíd bring it up because she wants him to know she needs her independence. So instead of telling him her life and her needs had been taken from her by the Smoking Man, she can indirectly state that freedom is important to her without the details.

DOGGETT
Yeah, Marita moved out. She
also brought some of your
things over. (beat) I was also
going to ask you if you would
like to move in with me.

Scully stops seasoning the chicken.

SCULLY
As much as I would love to,
John, I think itís better if
I have my own place.

Doggett nods his head.

DOGGETT
All right. (beat) Iíd love to
help you find a good place.

He smiles at her which brings a smile to her face. She feels better knowing that her new place will have John Doggettís stamp of approval.

A knock on the door catches their attention. Scullyís heart skips a beat. What if itís the Smoking Man and heís coming to get her? Her whole body tenses in fear.

DOGGETT
Iíll get it.

He walks out of the kitchen. Buddy looks up at Scully, who has frozen in her place. Her eyes are locked on the door. Buddy senses her fear and walks in front of her, and stands in stubborn guard dog stance.

Doggett opens the door to find Krycek. He looks in pain.

DOGGETT
Krycek?

KRYCEK
Is Dana here?

Doggett looks at him with suspicion. Krycek senses this. John obviously must remember what heís done.

KRYCEK
I need to tell her something.

Doggett hesitates. Scully comes out of the kitchen.

SCULLY
(worry)
What is it Alex?

Krycek looks beyond Doggett and at Scully.

KRYCEK
I just wanted you to know
that Cancer Man is dead.

Scully breathes. All of this seems all too easy, it has to be a dream.

SCULLY
Youíre serious? Iím not dreaming?

KRYCEK
Itís not a dream. I saw
the devil fall before me.
(beat) Youíre free.

Scully comes up to him and hugs him. Tears stream out of her eyes.

SCULLY
(soft)
Thank you.

She kisses him on the cheek and tears sting his eyes.

KRYCEK
(quiet, soft)
Iím sorry this happened
to you because of me.

SCULLY
You saved me, Alex.

She pulls away from him and looks him in the eyes. He nods his head.

KRYCEK
I better go now. I donít
want to continue intruding
on your evening.

Scully nods her head as he walks away. He still feels horrible for all the pain he has caused. He hopes that things can clear up and Monica is returned safely and unharmed. Hopefully everything can return to normal.

Just as he pulls out of Johnís driveway, Brad Follmerís car pulls up. Brad gets out of his car and walks up to Johnís door. Heís still covered in glitter from the traps Mulder and Krycek left in the basement office.

John and Dana are still standing in the doorway.

BRAD
(not noticing Scully)
John, you would not believe
the day Iíve had. Iím glad
to see that youíre all right.

He stops immediately when he sees Scully.

BRAD
(shock)
Dana?

His hopes fly high, hoping that Monica is here too. He looks around.

BRAD
(hopeful)
Whereís Monica? Is she here?

John looks down, he doesnít know how to tell him. Scully steps forward, knowing that Brad has a right to know.

SCULLY
Sheís not here, Brad.

Bradís heart shatters into a million pieces. He speechless, but continues to listen with the hope that Scully will tell him sheíll be out soon.

SCULLY
The truth is...

Scully chokes up on her tears.

SCULLY (CONíT)
...she may never come back.

Brad shakes his head, refusing to believe what sheís telling him. Tears come to his eyes.

SCULLY
Iím sorry, Brad.

A tear falls from his eye.

BRAD
No. If youíre here, then she has to-

Scully comes closer to him.

SCULLY
-Sheís not, Brad. (beat) They need her for-

BRAD
-No.

SCULLY
(sympathetic)
Brad, itís impossible. She knows too much.

BRAD
(mad)
So do we. (beat) Why is-
Why does she have to
suffer? (beat) I saw the
condition she was in.

This catches Johnís attention. He saw her? When?

BRAD
She doesnít need that place-

SCULLY
-But they need her.

She wishes he could understand how important she is to The Project.

BRAD
-And she needs people who
care for her. Who love her.

Scully looks down. He doesnít even know how right he is.

SCULLY
The man in charge of her
will take good care of her.

Brad looks at her in disbelief. How can she think that when she knows Monica needs him. He shakes his head, not wanting to hear how Monica canít come back. He starts to walk away, not wanting to believe any of it.

SCULLY
Brad.

He doesnít turn to face her, and he gets in his car and leaves.

Scully looks down, wishing she had better news to give him.

CUT TO:

INT. THE ALEXANDRIA APARTMENTS Ė 5TH FLOOR

The elevator opens and Brad slowly walks out. Everything Dana told him sunk in while he drove home. Especially the phrase: ďItís impossible.Ē

Brad is at a loss as to what he should do. Heís just been told he lost the only person in his life that ever mattered to him. And they expect him to move on. Maybe he should. Would life be easier if he just forgot any of this ever happened?

He gets out his keys and stands in front of apartment D. For ten months now heís kept his hopes alive. Hoping that one day Monica will return to him. For ten months heís lived with the knowledge of never being able to save her, to see her ever again.

Grandmama Reyes told him not to worry, that there is a light at the end, and that everything happens for a reason.

Maybe the only light on this road was when he saw Monica on the Brooklyn Bridge on Christmas Eve.

Maybe that was the last time heíd ever see her. After all, ďitís impossibleĒ, right?

He slips his key into the lock, just as Marita steps out from around the corner.

MARITA
Brad.

Brad looks in her direction. Heís not in the mood for anything she has to say.

BRAD
Nowís not a good time,
Marita. Iím not in the mood for-

MARITA
-She says not to give up on her.

Brad looks over at her again. She is being mysterious, but the way she said ďsheĒ catches Bradís attention.

BRAD
(after a beat)
What?

Marita walks towards him and stops on the other side of him.

MARITA
Donít give up on her, Brad.

She gives him a look that answers his unspoken question: yes, she saw Monica.

She walks away from him, leaving him with Monicaís words. He opens his mouth to ask her a question, but gets the feeling it would be useless. She wonít be saying any more. Marita turns the corner and is out of sight. Brad hesitates a moment before entering his apartment.

INT. BRAD FOLLMERíS APARTMENT Ė CONíT

Brad enters and shuts the door behind him.

How could Marita have seen Monica? How can he be certain that Marita actually saw her and that his mind isnít just thinking that she was talking about Monica. He canít be sure of anything Marita says. Sheís been so off in the past and suddenly she seems like a different person. If Marita did see Monica, why would she let him know this? Marita works with Alex Krycek, why would she want to let him know that she has seen Monica, and that Monica is alive?

Brad tosses his coat on his couch. A blinking red light on his answering machine catches his eye. If itís another message from the office, or from Mulder or Krycek, heíll go insane. Heís had enough of the office for one day. Especially since heís still covered in glitter despite trying to get it all off.

He hits the button on his machine to play the message.

JAMES FOLLMER (ON MACHINE)
Bradley, this is your father.

Brad glares at the machine. James Follmer is the last person Brad would like to hear from. Brad had tried to talk to his parents almost a year ago after they disowned him and it was useless. What could he be calling for? What ever it is, it probably isnít good.

JAMES FOLLMER (CONíT)
Iíve received a call from the Director
of the FBI. She told me that you had
turned down a promotional opportunity.

James Follmer sounds displeased with his son. Brad rolls his eyes. Only his father would want him to sleep with the Director to gain a promotion.

JAMES FOLLMER (CONíT)
I think you should reconsider her
offer. It could do you some good.
(beat) Besides, I hear that that
Mexican whore you were seeing has,
died. (beat) Iím thankful for that,
son. She was no good for you anyway.

Brad glares at the machine. He knew it was only time until his father found out that Monica had ďdiedĒ and gave him a call.

JAMES FOLLMER (CONíT)
It wouldíve been a disgrace to the
Follmer name had you gone and married
that servant. I donít know what you
were thinking. (beat) Anyway, you ought
to reconsider the Directorís offer. It
could be good for you to have good relations
with such a powerful woman in the government.

The machine beeps, indicating the end of his fatherís message. Brad hits the delete button to get rid of his fatherís message for good.

CUT TO:

INT. MULDER & KRYCEKíS APARTMENT

Mulder sits on his couch reading one of his old college psychology books with his glasses on. Diana can be heard in the kitchen cooking. The door to the apartment opens and Krycek enters. He has a pathetic look on his face as he stands there for a moment. Mulder looks up in Krycekís direction and sees him. He gives him a look for a moment and then calmly looks back down at his book, not seeming to care about Krycekís condition.

Krycek enters the apartment.

KRYCEK
(pathetic)
I hurt.

Mulder doesnít acknowledge him. Krycek looks at him for a beat, wondering why Mulder isnít caring for him. Itís why he came here. He wasnít getting any sympathy from Marita and he knew Mulder would take care of him. Why isnít he?

KRYCEK
(determined)
I said: I hurt.

Mulder looks up at him.

MULDER
What did you do to get hurt?

KRYCEK
I got shot.

MULDER
I see that, but what did
you do to get shot?

Krycek enters the living room. How does he tell Mulder what happened without telling him the details?

KRYCEK
I... umm...

MULDER
I saw Scully today.

He gives Krycek a stern look and then looks back down into his psychology book.

Krycek looks at him suspiciously.

KRYCEK
Oh?

MULDER
Yeah.

KRYCEK
Looks like sheís over that
illness she had, huh?

Krycek hopes Mulder will fall for the lie of why no one has seen Scully for almost a year.

MULDER
Yeah, looks like she has. (beat)
Then again, maybe her troubles
are just beginning now that some have ended.

Mulder gives Krycek a cold look.

MULDER
You know?

Mulder stands up and walks into the kitchen, leaving Krycek with his coldness.

Krycek looks behind him at the kitchen. This isnít what he expected from Mulder. Whatís going on? Mulder was being cold to him. Heís never been cold to him before. Off of Krycekís uncertain look, we...

FADE OUT:

THE END.
