Summary: Mulder and Krycek investigate “leprechauns”, but they stumble upon something else...

FADE IN:

EXT. WASHINTGON, D.C. – APRIL 7TH

We are high above the city seeing all the lights, monuments, and streets that make Washington, D.C. what it is. We zoom across the dark city a là all of those “CSI” TV shows. The city has a cool blue April glow as we make our way to the down town area, and into...

INT. APARTMENT BUILDING – BEDROOM

The room is dark as we pass a digital clock that reads 3:42 A.M. Loud squeaking noises are coming from the above apartment. A young woman lies on her back in her bed, starring up at the ceiling with insanity in her eyes. Loud “pleasurable” screams accompany the squeaking bed from above – another woman obviously faking sexual pleasure with her companion.

The young woman in her room, angrily gets out of her bed and goes over to a dresser drawer. There is only so much a person can take before they snap. Her heavy eyes let us know she hasn’t been sleeping much, and that’s probably because of the neighbors living above her.

She retrieves a small handgun from her dresser and exits her room with pure hatred and insanity.

CUT TO WITH THE SOUND OF A GUNSHOT:

INT. DEPUTY DIRECTOR ALVIN KERSH’S OFFICE – 9:05 A.M.

Kersh is sitting at the front of his conference table, impatiently checking his watch. Skinner sips his coffee and picks up a doughnut with sprinkles on it and eats it. A.D. Jana Cassidy patiently sips her Starbucks coffee, eyeing Skinner with disgust as he eats another doughnut. All the other FBI Directors sit patiently.

Kersh’s door opens and Brad walks in.

KERSH
(mad)
A little late, Assistant Director?

Brad takes his seat next to Skinner.

BRAD
I’m sorry, sir. I got back
from Mexico late last night.

KERSH
(cheerful)
Oh yeah, how did that go?

BRAD
Fine. (beat) We’re not here to
discuss our personal lives, sir.

KERSH
You’re right.

Kersh pulls out a file folder. Skinner leans over to Brad and holds the box of doughnuts to him.

SKINNER
Want a doughnut?

BRAD
No, thank you.

KERSH
Before we get this meeting
underway, I’d like everyone’s
input on my newest case for
Agents Mulder and Krycek. Since
Agent Doggett is out on injury
still, I don’t feel comfortable
with “Mumbo” and “Jumbo” working
on a real case. (beat) So I wrote this.

He hands the case file to Skinner, and he opens the file and starts to read.

BRAD
Sir? (beat) Wouldn’t this be wasting
Bureau time, money, and man power?

KERSH
Not really. I give them
fake cases all the time.

BRAD
If you don’t think they are
capable of a real case, why
not fire them, or send them
back to Quantico.

KERSH
Well, you know...

BRAD
(waiting for an answer)
No, I don’t know.

Brad turns to A.D. Simon Turner – head of the Office of Professional Responsibility, who deals with internal affairs.

BRAD
(irritated)
Simon, as head of OPR, doesn’t
this seem wasteful to you?

Brad looks at Simon, hoping he’ll have someone to side with him. Simon shrugs his shoulders.

SIMON
(not caring)
Uh... it’s ok. We do
it all the time.

Brad looks at him in disbelief and turns his look to A.D. Ted Rose – head of Training.

BRAD
(hopeful)
Ted? Don’t you think
they need extra training?

Ted shrugs his shoulders. Brad lets out a heavy sigh.

BRAD
Let me get this straight. (beat)
Everyone is fine with wasting
the Bureau’s time, money, and
man power on a made up case.

No one answers him, but no one agrees with him. The one thing they all know is that Mulder and Krycek can not be trusted to handle a real case.

Skinner laughs as he hands the fake case over to Brad. Brad takes the case, eyeing down Kersh with disapproval.

BRAD
(re: case file)
You’re having them search for
evidence of leprechauns
in a... garbage dumpster?

Kersh is covering the smirk on his face. He’s truly humored by his creative imagination. Brad lets out another sigh. Is he the only person in the FBI that comes here to work? He shuts the case file and slides it across the table at Kersh.

TED
Hey Al, aren’t rotations
coming up this year?

KERSH
Yep. (beat) I’m still deciding
on who will be where.

SKINNER
Oh boy!

He smiles at everyone.

KERSH
Walt, you’ll give my case to
your agents. And please, while
they’re out, can you work?

Skinner nods his head and takes the case file.

KERSH
Ok then, I’ve made a new
button design for The Brotherhood...

Brad rolls his eyes at this pointless meeting. Every meeting accomplishes the same thing: nothing. If only he were in OPR... things would be different...

CUT TO:

INT. SKINNER’S OFFICE – 10:15 A.M.

Mulder and Krycek are looking at the case file Kersh wrote for them. Skinner is watching them with a very serious expression.

KRYCEK
(re: case file)
Wait a sec! I have
to search dumpsters?!

Krycek looks up at Skinner, appauled by his assignment.

SKINNER
(serious)
That is correct, Agent Krycek.

KRYCEK
I don’t wanna!

Skinner cocks his eyebrow.

KRYCEK
Yeah, dat’s right! It’s B.S.!

SKINNER
Are you refusing an assignment?

KRYCEK
Yeah!

Mulder leans over to Krycek.

MULDER
(whisper)
I highly recommend you don’t
do that. This case came directly
from the Deputy Director-

KRYCEK
(loud)
-Deputy, schmeputy! There’s
no frickin’ way I’m getting’
in a dumpster!

Krycek folds his arms across his chest. Mulder looks to Skinner, worried that he’ll have to work this case alone.

SKINNER
Kersh thought that you were the
only qualified agents in all
the Bureau to investigate this
case. (beat) But... if you think
you’re not...

Krycek sits up straight. Is Wally bashing his ego?

KRYCEK
(offended)
Whoa! I’m qualified! I’m more
qualified than qualified! I’m
so qualified, I’d put J. Edgar to shame!

SKINNER
So you’ll take the assignment?

Krycek snatches the file folder out of Mulder’s hands and stands up.

KRYCEK
(“tough”)
Yeah, I’ll not only take this
assignment, I’ll prove to you that
I’m more qualified! (beat) I’ll even
make this crap assignment look cool!

Krycek gives Skinner his “cool” look as he puts on his sunglasses.

KRYCEK
(“super cool manchu”)
Besides, I don’t want to go
home where Svetlana and Diana
are plotting evil things to do to me.

With his “cool” expression, he exits Skinner’s office.

KRYCEK (O.S.)
Hey baby, how would you like
to play with my monkey!

Mulder gives Skinner a pathetic look as he’s forced to work this assignment with Alex “The Super Ego” Krycek. He slowly rises from his seat and leaves the office to go stop Krycek from hitting on his fellow agents.

CUT TO:

EXT. CITY ALLEY – NOON

The alley is empty. The ground is wet and smoke is filling the entry for a “cool” effect, just as Mulder and Krycek step into view. They are both wearing garbage man jump suits and sunglasses. They both carry cases filled with investigative tools.

They do their “super cool” walk down the ally, as if they are supermodels on a runway. They make their way towards a large smelly dumpster.

MULDER
(singing “CSI” theme song)
Who are you? Who? Who? Who?
Who? (beat) I really wanna know!

KRYCEK
(singing “CSI: Miami” theme song)
We won’t get fooled again!
Won’t get fooled again!

They stop in front of the big dumpster.

KRYCEK
“CSI: Miami” is so much
better than “CSI”.

MULDER
Nuh-uh.

KRYCEK
Yes-huh. “Miami” is in Miami.
They have beaches in Miami.
You know what that means? Bikini
girls getting wet and drunk! (beat)
That is why “Miami” is better than “CSI”.

MULDER
Yeah... well... “CSI” is in Las
Vegas, and I know you know what’s
in Vegas. (beat) Strippers.

Krycek thinks as a perverted grin forms on his face.

KRYCEK
(yeah buddy!)
Good point...

A thoughtful looks comes over Krycek.

KRYCEK
Ok, but speaking in the criminalistics
term... “Miami” is so much better. Ever
since “CSI” started doing that whole
Grissom lurves Sara and Sara lurves Grissom
crap... they really lost their intelligence.

MULDER
(disappointed)
Yeah. I hate when internet
crazies take over good shows.

KRYCEK
Me too! (beat) I mean, where the
hell did that whole Grissom and
Sara thing come from? That chick
has got a major Electra complex
going on. And Grissom... don’t
even get me started. What is he
a child molester?

Mulder and Krycek spazz.

MULDER
Ok, enough about TV shows.
We need to get to work
and find these leprechauns.

KRYCEK
Ok. After you.

Krycek signals for Mulder to get in the dumpster first.

MULDER
Nuh-uh, no way. Alphabetical
order, Agent Krycek. (beat)
K comes before M.

Mulder smiles. Krycek glares.

KRYCEK
Ok! By first name then! Ha!

Mulder looks at Krycek.

MULDER
You stupid idiot! You’re name
is Alex! A comes before F!

Mulder hits Krycek over the head. Krycek glares at him. He can’t win. He reluctantly sets his bag down and fixes his garbage man suit.

KRYCEK
(mumbling)
Why do I have this feeling that
Svetlana and Diana are behind this...

Krycek hops into the garbage dump.

KRYCEK
Ugh! I feel like I’m in
“Star Wars”! This is disgusting!

He looks down at all the garbage.

KRYCEK
There better not be something
living in here... Mulder, you
gonna throw over the bags?

MULDER
Yeah!

Suddenly the bags are thrown over into the dumpster, hitting Krycek in the head.

KRYCEK
AH!

Mulder giggles. Krycek sneers at him.

KRYCEK
Stupid punk...

MULDER
Red rover, red rover, send
Agent Mulder on over!

Mulder happily hops into the dumpster and stands next to Krycek.

MULDER
Yuk.

Krycek rolls his eyes.

KRYCEK
What did you expect?

MULDER
Let’s go to work!

Mulder sits down on a cardboard box and opens his bag. He pulls out latex gloves, a pencil, and a pad of paper.

MULDER
I’ll do the recording.

KRYCEK
What does that leave me?

MULDER
(smirking)
Evidence collection.

KRYCEK
Ew! (beat) Why are these
leprechauns living in dumpsters?

Mulder shrugs and throws Krycek a pair of latex gloves. Krycek reluctantly puts them on.

Mulder and Krycek start to dig through the garbage, looking for leprechauns.

Krycek lifts a garbage bag, only to discover a foot. He pauses, not sure what to think of what he’s just found.

KRYCEK
Hey Mulder?

MULDER
Yeah?

KRYCEK
How big are leprechauns?

MULDER
Small. Very small.

KRYCEK
Their feet aren’t big like ours?

MULDER
Nope. Why?

Krycek pauses and looks at the foot for a beat. Then, he suddenly realizes what he’s found.

KRYCEK
(freaked)
AH!

He jumps away from it.

MULDER
(worried)
What is it? A bug?

KRYCEK
NO! A foot!

MULDER
You mean... a human foot?

KRYCEK
(nodding)
Uh-huh...

MULDER
Is it alive?

KRYCEK
I don’t know... help
me uncover it.

Mulder and Krycek uncover the body. They stand back in shock, both of their jaws are dropped open.

MULDER
Wh-what does this mean?

KRYCEK
I don’t know...

MULDER
I think someone did some
dumping... and it wasn’t
their kitty litter...

Mulder slowly and dramatically looks at Krycek.

CUT TO:

INT. SKINNER’S OFFICE

Skinner is on his phone. He does not sound happy at all.

SKINNER
What do you mean you
need the coroner?!

MULDER (FILTERED)
We found a dead body! Alex
is photographing it, but
we really need-

SKINNER
(in disbelief)
-You mean you stumbled
across a homicide?

Skinner can’t believe this. Kersh is going to shit his pants. He holds his head in pain. The worst agents in all the Bureau are dealing with a homicide.

MULDER (FILTERED)
(shocked)
Oh my god! Krycek found a
second body! (beat) It’s
the leprechauns! I just know it!

Skinner shuts his eyes in pain... a double homicide...

SKINNER
I’ll contact A.D. Follmer, and he’ll
take care of this. You report to him
now. He’s in charge of Criminal Investigations.
(beat) Please, whatever you do, do not
alter the crime scene. (beat) Just sit
tight and close off the area so nothing
gets stolen or contaminated.

MULDER (FILTERED)
Yes sir! We shall protect and secure!

Mulder hangs up on Skinner, who sill can’t believe they stumbled across a double homicide.

He looks up and smiles. It’s time to call Brad Follmer and let him know he’ll have to deal with “Mumbo” and “Jumbo”.

Off Skinner’s evil grin...

CUT TO:

EXT. ALLEY

Mulder and Krycek have the dumpster surrounded with crime scene tape. They are standing in front of it, proud that they have secured the scene.

Suddenly, a large garbage truck enters the alley, slowly and menacingly making it’s way towards the dumpster.

Mulder and Krycek look to each other. What do we do now?

KRYCEK
He can’t take our crime scene!

Krycek steps forward and puts out his hand, signally the driver to stop the truck. The truck stops and the driver get out.

DRIVER
(mad)
What is this?! Get outta the way!

Krycek approaches the driver very professionally.

KRYCEK
I’m sorry, sir. I can’t. (beat)
I’m Special Agent Alex Krycek
with the FBI. This is a
secured crime scene.

DRIVER
You don’t look like no FBI
agent. Get outta my way before
I run you over runt!

The Driver goes back into his truck. Krycek looks back at Mulder.

MULDER
Show him your badge.

The truck starts to move again.

MULDER
(scared)
You gotta stop ‘im or
Skinner’s gonna be so mad!

Krycek looks up at the driver and goes over to the door. Krycek holds up his FBI credentials.

KRYCEK
(professional)
Sir, I need you to stop your
vehicle and get out. This is
a crime scene, and I can not
allow you to corrupt it.

DRIVER
(giving him the finger)
Go to hell!

KRYCEK
Sir, if you do not stop your
vehicle, you will be arrested
for obstruction of justice,
and refusal to cooperate with
federal agents.

MULDER
(to himself)
Isn’t that the same thing...

The Driver angrily stops the truck and gets out. He immediately throws Krycek a nice punch, knocking him to the ground.

KRYCEK
(getting up)
Ok, now that’s assaulting a federal
officer. (beat) I’m placing you
under arrest for assaulting a federal
officer and for not cooperating with
federal agents.

Krycek pulls out his handcuffs.

DRIVER
(pissed)
What?!

KRYCEK
Usted tiene il derecho de guardar
silencio. Caul quier cosa que Usted
diga uede ser usada contra Usted en
una corte de ley. ¿Entiende Usted?

DRIVER
What the hell?

Mulder is speechless! How the hell does Krycek now the Miranda Rights in Spanish?!

MULDER
(to Krycek)
He doesn’t know Spanish.
You’ll need to read him
his rights in English.

Krycek looks over at him.

KRYCEK
I don’t know them in English.

Mulder looks at him in disbelief.

MULDER
You’re kidding. You don’t
know your rights?

Krycek shakes his head.

MULDER
How the hell?

KRYCEK
I wanted to learn Spanish
to impress Monica so she’d want me.

Mulder rolls his eyes.

MULDER
Move over.

Mulder pushes Krycek out of the way.

MULDER
Sir, you are under arrest for
assaulting a federal agent, and
for refusing to cooperate with
law enforcement agents at the
scene of a homicide. (beat) You
have the right to remain silent.
Anything you say can and will be
used against you in a court of law.

DRIVER
(pissed)
I know my frickin’ rights!

MULDER (CON’T)
You have the right to talk to a
lawyer and have him or her present
with you while you are being questioned.
If you can not afford to hire a lawyer,
one will be appointed to represent you
before any questioning. You can decide
at anytime to exercise these rights, and
not answer any questions or make any
statements. (beat) Do you understand
each of these rights I have explained to you?

DRIVER
Yeah! I know my rights!

Unknown to Mulder and Krycek, but they have just been observed by Brad Follmer, who is shocked to see Mulder doing something correctly.

BRAD
Agents?

Mulder and Krycek turn around, shocked to see him.

BRAD
What’s going on?

MULDER
Sir, this fine fellow here
assaulted Agent Krycek and
refused to cooperate with us.
He was trying to take away our
crime scene. I have reasonable
suspicion to believe that he may
have information relating to our
homicide since he was so eager
to take it away.

BRAD
(double checking what he saw)
You’ve read him his rights?

MULDER
(proud)
Yes sir.

BRAD
All right. Take him in. I have a
forensic team here to process the scene.

Mulder and Krycek start to take the Driver away. Brad stops Mulder by his arm.

BRAD
(quiet)
Agent Mulder, don’t jump into
the interrogation. We don’t
know anything right now. Ok?

MULDER
Ay ay cap’n!

Mulder walks off, leaving Brad to wondering if he really head Mulder say “Ay ay cap’n!”...

CUT TO:

INT. FBI HALLWAY

Skinner is walking down the hall, heading toward Kersh’s office. Skinner looks rather unsure on how he’s going to tell Kersh that his fake case has led Mulder and Krycek right smack dab in the middle of a double homicide.

Skinner enters Kersh’s waiting area. He goes over to Judy.

SKINNER
Hi Judy. Is he in?

JUDY
Yes.

SKINNER
Is he busy?

JUDY
Making buttons. (beat) Go on in.

SKINNER
Thanks.

Skinner walks into Kersh’s office and sure enough, Kersh is making buttons for The Brotherhood.

SKINNER
Sir?

Kersh looks up at him.

KERSH
Walter, what brings you up here?
I thought I told you to work today.

SKINNER
I know, sir. And I am. (beat)
Your fake case you have Mulder
and Krycek working on... it
led them right to a double homicide.

Kersh sets down his button.

KERSH
(pissed)
What?

SKINNER
A double homicide, sir. (beat)
A.D. Follmer’s down there now.

KERSH
(pissed)
You better be pulling
my leg, Walter.

SKINNER
Boy scouts honor.

Skinner does the boy scouts honor hand signal. Kersh looks at him for a beat.

KERSH
(mad)
Well, shit.

Kersh and Skinner share a look. Why are the biggest morons in the FBI working a double homicide?

CUT TO:

INT. STRUGHOLD RESEARCH FACILITY – MONTGOMERY’S OFFICE

John Montgomery is working at his computer. He’s looking at graphs and diagrams, recording information into a notebook. There is a quiet knock on his office door. He turns around to see Scully.

MONTGOMERY
Good afternoon, Dana.

He motions for Scully to come in. She does and sits down in a chair next to Montgomery’s desk.

MONTGOMERY
(sensing her worry)
Something bothering you?

SCULLY
You know how I’ve been doing
preliminary health exams on Monica?

Montgomery nods his head.

SCULLY
She told me she’s pregnant. I
ran a test just to make sure,
and she is. Seven weeks now.

Montgomery leans back in his chair. This is not a good thing to hear.

MONTGOMERY
She and her unborn child
may not survive the tests.

SCULLY
I know. (beat) What should I do?

MONTGOMERY
Do you want her to live?

SCULLY
Of course I do.

MONTGOMERY
Then our only choice is to abort
it. (beat) She’s seven weeks?

SCULLY
I’m pretty sure.

MONTGOMERY
We’ll do an ultra-sound on her
today. (beat) Let’s hope she’s
eight weeks or less. We can’t
risk a surgical abortion. We
need her for testing as soon as possible.

Scully looks down, not happy with their only choice. Tears come to her eyes.

SCULLY
This isn’t fair, John. (beat)
It’ll kill her spirit and her
hope. (beat) This shouldn’t be
happening to her.

MONTGOMERY
We all make sacrifices, Dana.

Scully looks up at him and into his eyes. She doesn’t even know all the sacrifices he’s had to make in his life.

MONTGOMERY
Sacrificing her life isn’t something
I want to do, and I know you don’t
want to either.

Scully nods her head.

SCULLY
It still isn’t fair. (beat) It’s
not her fault her brain rejected
the serum. There was no need to
even bring her or John Doggett to
this place. (beat) They didn’t do anything,
and now they are both suffering. I
just know John is blaming himself
for my death. And Monica doesn’t deserve any of this.

Montgomery knows she’s right, but there’s nothing he can do to help her.

MONTGOMERY
(business needs to be done)
Let’s take a look at her.

Montgomery gets up from his desk and heads to the door. Scully follows.

CUT TO:

INT. LABORATORY

Montgomery and Scully enter the room.

MONTGOMERY
I’ll get everything set up.

Scully nods her head.

SCULLY
I’ll get her.

Scully makes her way down the hallway with a guard and stops in front of cell “RT-7915-3”. She opens the door and enters Monica’s cold cell.

INT. CELL

Monica is curled up on her hard bed. Her body is shivering from the cold, and tears are falling down her face. All she has is a light-weight hospital gown given to her. Her engagement ring was taken away from her, and she’s feeling farther away from home than she’d like to be. She looks up at Scully and doesn’t bother sitting up, her senses are telling her not to go with Scully.

SCULLY
(professional)
Get up.

Monica shuts her eyes, not wanting this to happen.

SCULLY
We have more tests to do.

MONICA
Liar.

She looks up into Scully’s eyes.

MONICA
I know what you’re going to do.

She glares at Scully through her tears. Scully hates this as much as Monica does.

SCULLY
(stern)
Get up, Monica.

The security guard steps forward and harshly pulls Monica up by her arm.

SECURITY GUARD
(mean)
You need to listen to your doctor.

MONICA
You’re hurting me.

Scully watches him with disapproval as the guard drags Monica out of her cell. Scully quickly follows.

SCULLY
(mad)
You shouldn’t be treating
her this roughly.

SECURITY GUARD
Sometimes they need to learn a lesson.

SCULLY
She’s my patient, and I
think I know what’s best for her.

Scully stops the guard, making him let go of Monica. Scully quickly takes Monica by the arm, to make sure she won’t run off. There’s no doubt in Scully’s mind that this guard will kill Monica if she runs.

SCULLY
I’ll handle her.

She glares intensely into the guards eyes. After a beat, she makes her way back to the laboratory with Monica.

INT. LABORATORY

Montgomery has set everything up. He looks over at Scully when she brings Monica in.

MONTGOMERY
Help her to the table.

Scully leads Monica to the examination table and helps her on. Monica looks to Scully with pleading eyes, begging her not to do this to her.

MONICA
(crying)
Please don’t, Dana.

Scully doesn’t say anything to her. Montgomery comes over to them.

MONICA
(scared)
What are you going to do?

SCULLY
We’re going-

MONTGOMERY
-Don’t bother asking any
questions, you won’t get
any answers.

Montgomery gives Scully a look, telling her that this is how she’ll have to treat Monica.

Montgomery gets Monica hooked up to the ultra-sound. She fearfully watches Scully and Montgomery. They say nothing as they both see she’s less than eight weeks pregnant.

Montgomery turns off the machines and goes over to a cabinet. Monica watches him, knowing what he’s doing, sensing what is to come. Montgomery opens a bottle marked “RU486”. He takes out a pill as Scully gets a glass of water. Monica looks around the lab, seeing the doors that are guarded by the security guard. There’s no way for her to escape.

Montgomery comes over to Monica with the pill.

MONICA
You can’t do this to me.

MONTGOMERY
(handing her the pill)
Take it.

Monica closes her mouth tightly and shakes her head, as tears well up in her eyes.

MONICA
No. Please don’t.

MONTGOMERY
(stern)
Take it.

Monica shakes her head. Montgomery looks to Scully.

MONTGOMERY
Hold her down.

Scully looks at him, not sure if this is the best way to go about doing this.

MONICA
NO!

Monica quickly hits the glass out of Scully’s hand to distract them, and she quickly makes a run for the door. The security guard grabs her, but she puts up a fight. She’s not about to let this happen, and she elbows the guard in the face. He strikes her down to the ground with a mean blow to her head. Scully and Montgomery run over.

SCULLY
(concerned)
Hey!

MONTGOMERY
(to guard)
That’ll be enough.

He gives the guard a disapproving look. If he were in complete charge of this facility this guard would not be a part of it.

Monica lies on the ground a little woozy in the head. Montgomery kneels down next to her and looks up at Scully.

MONTGOMERY
Get another glass of water.

Scully does as he asks and bring him another glass of water.

MONTGOMERY
(to Monica)
You have to take this.

MONICA
(light headed)
Please don’t do this.

Montgomery has no choice but to force the pill into Monica’s mouth. He holds her mouth shut until she has no choice but to swallow the pill. Tears stream down her face as her body relaxes on the ground. Scully kneels down next to her and helps her drink the water.

MONICA
(crying; soft)
I hate you.

Scully gets up and walks away from Monica to set the glass on the counter. She’s not happy with what they’ve done to her, and she hates herself for doing it.

MONTGOMERY
(to Scully)
I’ll help her back to her cell.

Scully nods her head.

Montgomery helps Monica off the ground and helps her walk down the hall. She can barely stand on her own. Her legs are shaky and she continues to cry.

INT. MONICA’S CELL

Montgomery helps Monica to her bed and covers her with a blanket.

MONTGOMERY
Dr. Scully will be in every
hour to check on your. Try
to get some rest.

Monica rolls over on her side, facing away from him. Montgomery watches her for a beat, feeling bad for what he had to do to her. Montgomery slowly stands up and leaves Monica alone in her cell, with her tears endlessly falling.

CUT TO:

INT. LABORATORY

Scully is cleaning up the broken glass. Montgomery enters the room. Scully doesn’t face him, but she stops cleaning when she hears his footsteps stop. She starts to cry, not able to hide how hard this is for her.

SCULLY
(upset)
She’s done nothing to deserve this.

She drops broken glass into the garbage can and turns to face Montgomery.

MONTGOMERY
No one deserves what they get
here, Dana. (beat) People die
here. They die because of what
we do to them.

SCULLY
(crying)
I can’t do this. I can’t.
(beat) How can you? Doesn’t
it hurt you to do this to
innocent people?

MONTGOMERY
Of course it does.

Scully looks at him.

MONTGOMERY
You need to detach yourself, Dana.
If you don’t, you’ll go mad.

Scully looks down, knowing that’s the best thing to do. But some things are more easily said than done.

MONTGOMERY
If I had complete control over
this facility, I would run it
a lot differently. (beat) We have
people here who shouldn’t be here.
People who have families, and for
some reason, they aren’t allowed
out to return to their own lives.
(beat) I don’t think that’s fair.
(beat) But as long as Charles Spender
is in charge, this is how things
are going to remain.

Scully wipes her tears away. It brings her comfort to know she’s not the only one who is having a hard time with this. Montgomery is right. There’s nothing they can do.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. QUANTICO – MEDICAL ROOM – 5:30 P.M.

The two bodies from the dumpster are covered with sheets. Mulder and Krycek are standing in a corner, waiting for Brad and the coroner.

KRYCEK
(mad)
It smells in here.

MULDER
Why are you always complaining?

KRYCEK
(mad/sarcastic)
Gee, I don’t know. (beat) Maybe if
I would’ve gotten sleep last night,
I wouldn’t complain all the time.

MULDER
I slept fine last night.

Krycek glares at him.

KRYCEK
(pissed)
Yeah, because you exhausted
yourself on Diana.

MULDER
You’re just jealous because I’m
gettin’ some, and you ain’t
gettin’ no lovin’.

Mulder smirks at Krycek.

KRYCEK
(mad)
I really don’t appreciate you
two being up so late, and being
so loud. (beat) I’m sure I’m not
alone with this. Poor Jeff sleeps
underneath that room.

MULDER
We’ll try to keep it down.

KRYCEK
(rolling his eyes)
Yeah right. (beat) I’m sure you’re
being that loud because Svetlana
put you up to it. I can’t wait for
her to leave. (beat) Since when has
she and Diana become friends.

MULDER
Alex, here’s something you may
not know... You’re fun to pick on.
And in the fun-ness, friendship can
be made. It’s a common hobby they
both share. I think it’s endearing
to see my wife and your older sister
getting a long so swell. (beat) It’s
how I wish we could be Alexander.

Mulder looks over and smiles at Krycek.

KRYCEK
You make me sick.

The door to the room opens and the coroner and Brad enter.

BRAD
Well, AFIS confirms their
identities to be Erica
Masters and Chicken Brulet.

Mulder giggles.

MULDER
(humored)
Chicken roast.

KRYCEK
What the hell is “eh-fis”?

Brad looks at him. He can’t be serious... can he?

BRAD
(dead pan)
AFIS: abbreviation for Automated
Fingerprinting Identification System.

Krycek smiles.

KRYCEK
(laughing a bit)
Oh... I thought it meant
something else.

He laughs, and we only fear what dirty thing he thought it could mean.

BRAD
Anyway...

Brad looks at them, starting to wonder something.

BRAD
Have either one of you ever
worked a homicide case before?

MULDER
I have.

KRYCEK
I’ve caused them, but
never investigated them.

Brad looks at Krycek. Did he hear him right?

BRAD
(hesitated beat)
Ok. (beat) Can either one of
you tell me why we are here?

Mulder eagerly raises his hand and waves it in the air.

BRAD
(annoyed)
Agent Mulder, you don’t need
to raise your hand to speak.

MULDER
Oh. (beat) We’re here to determine
the cause of death.

KRYCEK
They were in a smelly dumpster,
wouldn’t that kill anyone?

BRAD
(ignoring Krycek)
No, we’ve already determined
the cause of death with our
forensic pathologist.

MULDER
(excited)
Oh! We’re here to determine
the time in which death occurred.

BRAD
Exactly.

Krycek glares at Mulder.

KRYCEK
Wise-ass.

The coroner leans over to Brad.

CORONER
(whisper)
Green agents?

BRAD
You’d think so.

The coroner looks over at Mulder and Krycek, not sure what to think of them. He and Brad head over to the exam table to take a look at the male victim, Chicken Brulet. Mulder and Krycek follow.

The coroner pulls the sheet down to reveal the body.

KRYCEK
(trying to be Mr. “Know It All”)
He was shot at close range!
Ha! I knew something you didn’t!

BRAD
We know that already, Agent Krycek.

KRYCEK
(ignoring Brad)
I could tell by the tattooing.

Brad rolls his eyes.

BRAD
The tattooing is on his back,
stop repeating what we know.
(beat; under breath) Why do
I get the feeling you don’t
know what you’re talking about...

KRYCEK
What?

BRAD
Nothing.

CORONER
His hands and arms are
in rigor mortis-

KRYCEK
-Rigor what?!

MULDER
(annoyed)
Mortis. It’s what happens when
you die. You’re body becomes
stiff, starting from the head
and all the way down to the toes.

KRYCEK
How do you know all of this?

MULDER
I’ve worked these cases before.
Besides, I’m an FBI agent, it’s
my job to know.

Krycek rolls his eyes.

CORONER
Lividity has set in on his stomach-

KRYCEK
-Wait! What’s lividity?

Brad glares at Krycek.

BRAD
(beyond irritation)
Agent Krycek, I want you to run
the victims’ names and fine the
addresses of their family members.

KRYCEK
(not wanting to)
Why?

BRAD
(irritated)
Because you don’t know shit
about what we’re doing here.
(beat) This way you’ll be doing
something useful.

KRYCEK
What good will finding
their families do?

BRAD
We can find out about our victims.
Figure out if they had a schedule
with missed appointments to help
narrow a time of death. (beat)
I can’t believe I’m having this conversation...

KRYCEK
Oh. Ok.

Krycek leaves the medical room.

CUT TO:

INT. MULDER & KRYCEK’S OFFICE – 6:40 P.M.

Krycek is sitting at his computer. He looks very into what he’s doing as he clicks away with his mouse. He’s interrupted by a knock on the door.

KRYCEK
What?

He looks over to the door and sees Brad.

BRAD
Did you get the information
I asked you to get?

KRYCEK
Yeah, it’s over there.

Krycek points at the other end of his desk. He turns his attention back to his computer. Brad looks at him suspiciously.

BRAD
What are you doing?

Brad enters the office and walks over to the desk. He picks up the file folder Krycek pointed to and sees that Krycek is playing solitaire on his computer

BRAD
(dead pan)
You’re playing solitaire?

KRYCEK
Uh-huh.

BRAD
Do you realize that you
have a case to investigate?

KRYCEK
Yeah.

BRAD
Then why are you
playing computer games?

KRYCEK
Because I want to. (beat)
Besides, the porn sites are blocked.

BRAD
This is a big case, Agent Krycek.
A double homicide. This is probably
the biggest case you’ll ever work,
and here you sit... playing computer games.

KRYCEK
Yeah. So?

Brad waits for Krycek to turn off his computer and get to work. Krycek doesn’t.

BRAD
Go home Agent Krycek. I don’t
expect you to work late and
it’s almost seven o’clock.

KRYCEK
Thanks.

Krycek turns off his computer. He’s more than happy to go home. Mulder comes into the office.

MULDER
So I questioned the garbage man,
and I think we can eliminate him
as a suspect. He was just doing his job.

BRAD
You got his information?

MULDER
Yes, sir. And he also apologized
for almost destroying the crime scene.

Krycek walks past Mulder.

KRYCEK
See you guys tomorrow.

MULDER
You’re leaving so soon?

KRYCEK
It’s almost seven
o’clock you ninny.

Mulder checks his watch.

MULDER
Jeepers! Time flies! (beat)
Hey, do you guys want to
got out for drinks or something?

KRYCEK
Not if Diana and Svetlana come.

Mulder rolls his eyes.

MULDER
You’re sister left earlier today.
And I really wish you and Diana
would get along. (beat) Brad,
do you want to come?

BRAD
No, you go ahead. I’m going to
look over what Krycek dug up on our VICs.

MULDER
Ok.

Brad exits their office with the file folder.

BRAD
I’ll see you guys tomorrow. Be
on time. We’ve got a lot of
work to do.

KRYCEK
What time is “on time” for
you? Wally’s got a very laid
back schedule.

BRAD
I’ll be in at eight.

MULDER
Okie-dokie! Do we
come to your office?

BRAD
Yes. (beat) Have a good night.
(beat) Please don’t drink too much.

Brad starts to walk away from them.

MULDER
Ok! Give Monica a kiss for me!

Krycek looks at Mulder like he’s nuts. Brad turns around. Does Mulder not know that Monica and Scully are “dead”?

Mulder happily waves at Brad. Brad nods his head, not sure what to think of Mulder.

CUT TO:

EXT. CARNIVAL – DAY

The sun is shining brightly. The flowers are in perfect bloom and everyone is having a wonderful time. We make our way through the happy crowd to find Monica. She’s wearing a light yellow dress and is sitting on a bench with a little girl. She looks in our direction and smiles. Brad enters frame and sits next to Monica and the little girl. Monica leans over and gives him a kiss on the cheek. The little girl happily runs over to Brad and sits on his lap, giving him a daisy she picked. Brad smiles at her. Monica watches with a smile that turns sad.

MONICA
(sad)
She’s taken away.

Brad looks over at her as the little girl disappears from his arms.

BRAD
(confused)
What?

Monica’s eyes focus beyond Brad. He slowly follows her eye line to see fiery storm clouds making their way in. The sun is covered and shadows cover the Earth. The world falls silent.

MONICA
They’re coming.

Brad quickly looks over at her as a loud humming sound is heard. The sound intensifies with loudness as:

SMASH CUT TO:

INT. BRAD FOLLMER’S OFFICE – MORNING – APRIL 8TH

Brad’s head pops up from his desk, having just woken up from his dream. He looks around his desk realizing he’s still at work, having never gone home. His clock reads 8:03 in the morning. Papers and files are spread out all over his desk.

There is a knock on his office door.

BRAD
Come in.

The door opens and Mulder and Krycek come in.

MULDER
Good morning, sir.

BRAD
Good morning.

KRYCEK
Were you here all night?

BRAD
I reviewed over the information
that you found last night. I think
you should talk to Mr. Brulet’s father.

MULDER
Sounds good to me.

BRAD
Good. I took some notes on
what you should ask. You need to-

MULDER
-Wait.

Brad looks at Mulder.

MULDER
Aren’t you coming with us?

BRAD
No. I have a million things to
do here. Other cases and agents
to keep track of. Your duty is
to report your findings of the
case to me. I can’t be out there
holding your hands through this.
You’re both agents of the FBI.
Quantico has trained you, and I-

KRYCEK
-“Quanta” what?

Brad stops talking and looks at Krycek.

BRAD
Quantico.

KRYCEK
What do they sell?

BRAD
(confused)
I’m sorry, what?

KRYCEK
Quanta Company. What do they sell?

BRAD
I’m not sure I’m following.

Mulder steps forward to explain his dumb colleague.

MULDER
Sir, I’d like to apologize for my
dumb partner. He seems to think
Quantico is “Quanta” and “Co.”, as
in “Company.” (beat) Hence getting Quanta Company.

BRAD
(not amused)
You’re joking, right?

Mulder shakes his head “no.”

BRAD
Agent Krycek, what training academy
did you go through before becoming
a Special Agent for the FBI?

KRYCEK
Never went to no training academy.

BRAD
Then why are you here?

KRYCEK
(duh)
Because we have a
homicide to investigate.

Brad puts his hand to his head, hoping to prevent the inevitable headache of working with Mulder and Krycek.

BRAD
What, did you wake up this morning and
plot ways to get under my skin? (beat)
Agent Mulder, I’m putting you in charge.

Brad hands Mulder a file folder.

KRYCEK
(mad)
Why is he in charge?

BRAD
He knows more about the case
than you, and has apparently had
more FBI training than you.

Brad gives Krycek a mean look. Krycek doesn’t argue back to him. Brad isn’t as easy to manipulate and confuse as Skinner is.

BRAD
(after a beat)
This is a serious case,
agents. Don’t mess it up.

MULDER/KRYCEK
Yes, sir.

Mulder and Krycek leave Brad’s office.

INT. FBI HALLWAY – CON’T

Mulder opens the file and reviews over Brad’s notes.

KRYCEK
Hey, did you guys figure out
the time of death?

MULDER
Yeah, the coroner said it
probably happened around
four in the morning.

KRYCEK
We should probably talk to
people who live near that
dumpster. If a gun went off,
someone must’ve heard it.

MULDER
Yeah, that’s a good idea.

KRYCEK
(egotistical)
Thank you.

CUT TO:

INT. APARTMENT HALLWAY – 10:18 A.M.

Mulder and Krycek step out of an apartment and into the hallway. An old woman stands in the door.

MULDER
Thank you for your time
ma’am. You have helped
us a great deal.

KRYCEK
And thanks for the
home baked cookies.

Krycek bites into a warm chocolate chip cookie.

KRYCEK
(mouth full)
They’re delicious.

OLD WOMAN
You’re welcome.

She shuts the door. Mulder turns to Krycek with a glare.

KRYCEK
(re: glare)
What?

MULDER
(disapproving)
Eating cookies while on the
job. (bet) And chocolate at that.

KRYCEK
So.

MULDER
What if someone sees you
eating chocolate? With me.

Krycek glares.

MULDER
They might think you’re a homo.

KRYCEK
(offended)
I am not!

MULDER
Then stop eating chocolate
near me! Only Diana can!

Mulder immaturely hits the rest of the cookie out of Krycek’s hand and onto the dirty floor.

KRYCEK
You just wasted a perfectly
good cookie, Mulder!

Mulder rolls his eyes and knocks on the door across from the old woman.

MULDER
Act professional, Alex.

KRYCEK
(defensive)
I am professional.

MULDER
You are not.

KRYCEK
I am too.

MULDER
Are not.

KRYCEK
Am too.

MULDER
Are not.

KRYCEK
Am too!

MULDER
Are not!

The door to the apartment opens and the young blonde woman from the beginning stands in the doorway.

KRYCEK
(immature/jumping in place)
Am too! Am too! Am too!

Mulder politely smiles at the young woman. Krycek hasn’t noticed.

MULDER
(pulling out badge)
Hi. I’m Special Agent
Fox Mulder and this is-

Mulder whacks Krycek hard to shut him up from his “Am too!”s.

MULDER (CON’T)
...Agent Krycek.

Krycek finally notices the young woman and puts on his “cool” look.

MULDER (CON’T)
We’re with the FBI.

KRYCEK
Yeah... the Female Body Inspectors-

WHACK! Krycek is elbowed extremely hard in the gut by Mulder.

MULDER
May we come in and ask
you a few questions, Miss...

NICOLE WISEMAN
Wiseman. Nicole Wiseman.

MULDER
Miss Wiseman.

Mulder smiles at her.

NICOLE WISEMAN
(polite/innocent)
May I ask what this is about?

MULDER
We just need to ask you a
few questions about a murder
that happened in the apartment
above yours.

NICOLE WISEMAN
I don’t know anything about that.

She smiles sweetly at them.

MULDER
You didn’t hear anything?

Nicole pretends to think. She shrugs her shoulders and shakes her head.

NICOLE WISEMAN
Nope.

She smiles at Mulder.

NICOLE WISEMAN
Now, if you don’t mind, I
have work to do.

She starts to shut the door.

KRYCEK
One more thing, Miss Wiseman...

MULDER
(under breath)
Do not ask her out on a date...

KRYCEK
... How well did you know your
neighbors who formerly lived above you?

NICOLE WISEMAN
(a dash of anger)
Erica and Chicken?

Krycek nods his head.

NICOLE WISEMAN
(not happy)
Let’s just say they weren’t the
kind of people you’d go to borrow an egg from.

KRYCEK
Could you tell me
exactly what you mean?

She opens the door more.

NICOLE WISEMAN
They were under aged drunks. They
were high all the time. Would
howl into the night for no reason.

Her tone becomes more angry. Krycek gives Mulder a look.

NICOLE WISEMAN (CON’T)
They would throw loud parties and
have loud sex all the time. For
hours and hours. (beat) I haven’t
slept in a month because of them.
And you know what?

Mulder and Krycek listen as a small grin forms on her face.

NICOLE WISEMAN (CON’T)
I’m glad their dead. (beat)
Believe me, they had it coming.

Mulder and Krycek look her over carefully.

MULDER
Where were you early
yesterday morning, Ms. Wiseman?

She smiles at them softly.

NICOLE WISEMAN
I was here. (beat; angry)
Trying to sleep.

KRYCEK
Do you own a gun?

Nicole looks at him carefully.

NICOLE WISEMAN
I live alone in a dangerous
part of town.

MULDER
Is that a “yes”, or is
that a “no”?

NICOLE WISEMAN
Yes, I do.

KRYCEK
Does your gun happen to
be a .45 caliber automatic?

Krycek looks into her eyes. She studies them carefully.

NICOLE WISEMAN
Am I under arrest?

MULDER
Do you need to be?

Mulder makes eye contact with her as she bites her lower lip.

NICOLE WISEMAN
I think you’ve harassed me
enough for one day.

She starts to shut her door again.

MULDER
We know you did it, Ms. Wiseman.

NICOLE WISEMAN
(bitchy)
Yeah? Where’s your proof?

MULDER
You moved the bodies. Your
finger prints were found.

Nicole looks at Mulder. He’s dead serious.

CUT TO:

INT. INTERROGATION OBSERVATION ROOM

Mulder and Krycek are watching Nicole Wiseman in the interrogation room. She sits alone at the table, her hands nervously moving all about.

The door to the room opens and Brad enters.

BRAD
Who is she, and did you have
probable cause to make an arrest?

MULDER
Nicole Wiseman. She lives below
our victims. She claimed to know
nothing about what happened. Saying
she heard nothing at all.

Brad listens carefully, making sure they have done the right thing.

MULDER
We questioned her some more
and soon discovered that: yes,
she was home during the time of
the murder. So her claim to have
heard nothing is false.

BRAD
You’re assuming, Agent Mulder.

MULDER
She said she was “trying to
sleep,” indicating she was awake.

Brad nods his head.

BRAD
Go on.

MULDER
Krycek asked if she owned a
gun. She does. (beat) When I
told her we know she did it,
she became very pale and quiet.
(beat) Having been with the Bureau
for over ten years, I believe she did it.

BRAD
So what are you doing now?
The court won’t believe you
just because you’ve been with
the Bureau for over ten years.

MULDER
Finger prints were found on
the victims. No match was
found in AFIS. (beat) I’m
getting a match.

Mulder holds up a glass of water and smiles at Brad. He leaves the observation room.

BRAD
Agent Krycek, I want you to get
a search warrant for her apartment.
We need to find her gun.

KRYCEK
Yes, sir.

Krycek leaves the observation room. Brad focuses his attention to the interrogation room.

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM

Nicole sits at the table. Mulder enters the silent room. The CLANK of the door opening startles Nicole. Mulder comes over to the table and sets the glass of water down.

MULDER
I thought you might be thirsty.

NICOLE WISEMAN
Thank you.

She doesn’t touch the glass of water.

MULDER
You know you still have the right
to have an attorney present with you.

NICOLE WISEMAN
It’s ok. (beat) You want to
know why I did it, don’t you?

Mulder nods his head.

MULDER
I am a little puzzled how a nice
lady could knock off two people in one night.

NICOLE WISEMAN
Every night it was the same. (beat)
Calling the cops didn’t do a damn
bit of good. Reporting them to the
land lord was a waste of time... he
never listened anyway.

She picks up the glass of water and takes a sip. Mulder smiles inside. He got his fingerprint.

NICOLE WISEMAN
Have you ever lived in an
apartment building, Agent Mulder?

MULDER
Yeah.

NICOLE WISEMAN
Ever have up stairs neighbors who
would stomp around? Blare loud music?
Have loud sex from two in the morning
to eight or ten in the morning?

Mulder listens.

NICOLE WISEMAN
(tears in eyes)
I couldn’t take it anymore. (beat)
I asked them to respect me and
others, and they never listened.
They didn’t fucking care.

She starts to cry.

NICOLE WISEMAN
(fighting back tears)
I lost my job because of them.
I haven’t slept in a month. (beat)
I worked at a nine to five job.
And now, I have nothing. I don’t
even know how I’m going to pay
rent. (beat) I’ll get evicted.

She starts to cry again. Mulder looks at her, feeling bad for the future she has just given herself.

TIME CUT TO:

INT. BALLISTICS LAB – QUANTICO

Krycek and Brad are in the lab as Nicole Wiseman’s gun is being matched to the crime scene.

Mulder walks in.

MULDER
The print I pulled from
the glass matches the
prints found on the VICs.

BRAD
Good job.

KRYCEK
Her weapon matches our crime.
It had been fired six times.
She didn’t clean it. (beat)
Looks like this case is a wrap.

Mulder and Krycek give each other a high five. Brad can’t help but smile.

BRAD
Well agents, I think it’s safe
to say that you’ve just shocked
the entire Bureau.

Brad walks to the door. He turns before leaving.

BRAD
(to Mulder & Krycek)
I guess you guys aren’t the
worst agents after all. (beat)
I look forward to reading your
case reports.

Brad smiles as he leaves the lab.

Mulder and Krycek smile at one another.

MULDER
I guess this means we probably
shouldn’t write our reports
with crayons, huh?

KRYCEK
Yeah.

They walk to the door and leave the lab.

KRYCEK
(quiet)
You are going to help me
write my report, right?

MULDER
Of course, buddy of mine!

Mulder puts his arm around Krycek’s shoulder as they walk down the hall.

KRYCEK
We should go celebrate
our victory over drinks.

MULDER
Only if I bring Diana.

KRYCEK
(not happy)
Fine.

Mulder skips in place.

MULDER
(happy)
Oh goodie! Oh boy!

TIME CUT TO:

INT. MULDER & KRYCEK’S APARTMENT – 1:07 A.M.

Mulder, Diana and Krycek loudly stumble their way into the apartment. Mulder and Krycek have their arms over Diana’s shoulders.

KRYCEK
(shouting)
No! You’re da man!

MULDER
(loud)
Nuh-uh! You’re da man!

Diana rolls her eyes and walks away from the boys.

DIANA
Shh... You don’t want to
disturb the neighbors.

Mulder and Krycek’s eyes go wide as they become very silent. The don’t want poor Jeffery Spender below to get pissed at them and kill them too!

Mulder and Krycek put their fingers to their mouths and say:

MULDER/KRYCEK
Shh...

They quietly tip-toe around the apartment so they don’t disturb anyone. Knowing that right now Spender is getting nice, peaceful, silence...

OFF THIS PEACEFUL SILENCE...

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. STRUGHOLD RESEARCH FACILITY – MONICA’S CELL

Monica lies in her dark cold cell all alone. She cries in her bed. Crying for the loss that has been forced upon her. She needs someone there to help her get through this terrible time. Needing more than empty silence.

Off of her, we...

FADE OUT:

THE END.
