Summary: Scully and Monica have to become accustomed to their new way of life at The Facility, while Krycek believes he's finally getting what he deserves for betraying his friends.


FADE IN:

INT. BRAD FOLLMER’S BEDROOM – NIGHT

Brad is sleeping peacefully in his bed. The door to the bedroom slowly opens, letting in dim light from the living room. A woman’s silhouette stands in the doorway. She walks over to the bed and carefully lies down next to him, hoping not to wake Brad. He wakes up and rises on his elbow.

BRAD
(confused)
Monica?

Monica looks up at him and smiles. Brad looks into her eyes. How could this be? According to everyone he has spoken with, Monica is dead. Even though he knows she’s not dead, he’s still shocked to see her here.

BRAD
We were told you were de-

MONICA
Shh...

She gently places her index finger on his lips and smiles at him. Her hand makes it’s way through his hair, as he allows her to lead him into a passionate kiss. Brad’s hand moves down the side of her torso and rests upon her stomach. They gently part from their kiss. Brad looks down into Monica’s worried eyes.

MONICA
(scared)
Please help us, Brad.

Her eyes beg him, as if she knows something terrible is going to happen.

BRAD
(worried)
Where are y-

A telephone rings loudly!

SMASH CUT TO:

INT. BRAD FOLLMER’S BEDROOM – DAY

Brad’s eyes pop open and he sits up in bed. He looks around the room. No Monica. He lets out a heavy sigh, knowing Monica needs his help. But he doesn’t know where she is, or how to help her. He hates feeling helpless, and that is exactly how he feels right now.

The phone on the nightstand rings a second time. Brad looks at the phone, which is next to a clock. The time is 7:15 in the morning. He reaches over and picks up the phone.

BRAD
Hello?

MULDER (FILTERED)
(happy)
It’s Mulder! Did you
get my surprise?!

BRAD
What?

The line goes dead after Brad hears an excited giggle on the other end. After a beat of wondering what the hell that was about, Brad hangs up the phone.

He slowly gets up and walks into the living room. He stops dead in his tracks when he sees: a gigantic, fluffy, brown teddy bear in the middle of the room. Attached to this over-sized bear is a big card with red and green colors that reads “Congratulations!”.

Brad blinks his eyes a few times, not believing what he’s seeing. He cautiously makes his way over to the stuffed bear. He’s still in disbelief. He opens the card and reads what’s on the inside. “Welcome To Super Buddies, Bradley! [signed] Fox Mulder & The Super Buddy Gang”.

Brad rubs his forehead, feeling a headache sink in. He sighs and puts the card on the couch. What the hell is he going to do with an over-sized teddy bear?

He shakes his head and goes into the kitchen to have breakfast before going into work.

CUT TO:

DARKNESS

Her cries do not soothe the silence. A feeling deep inside warns her that something bad is going to happen to her and her unborn child. Monica’s warm tears fall down her cold cheeks as she lies on the hard bed in her cell.

Her body shivers in the cold blackness. She curls up on the bed, desperately trying to keep her warmth. Her eyes search for anything in the pitch darkness of the room, but it’s useless when the eyes see nothing.

Tears continue to sting her eyes as a feeling of complete hopelessness washes over her. There is nothing she can do to help herself in this situation. It’s not like she can do whatever it takes to get out of this place. She has more than just herself to worry about now. She has her and Brad’s unborn child to take care of. Though she’s only about four weeks pregnant, she senses that she is carrying a little girl.

Suddenly, the bright white lights in her cell turn on, blinding her temporarily as her eyes try to adjust to the drastic change. She sits up on her bed, shielding her eyes from the bright light.

Her cell is small with pristine white tiled floor, white walls, a toilet, sink, and a hard bed with rough sheets. The cell reminds her of a clean prison cell, but without the luxury of bars and windows to see the surrounding area. She can feel that she is deep beneath the ground, as if she has been buried alive.

Monica shuts her eyes, pushing away an uneasy feeling that is coming to her. She rubs her forehead, feeling immense pressure in her brain.

Her cell door unlatches loudly, cracking the silence as John Montgomery enters her cell. In his hand he carries a tray of food. Monica looks up at him, still trying to fight the pain within her head.

Montgomery sets the tray of food on her bed.

MONTGOMERY
You’ll want to eat this.
You’ll need your energy.

MONICA
Where’s Dana? Why haven’t you
let me go? What did I do wrong
to be held here against my will?

Montgomery senses the anger in her voice.

MONTGOMERY
You’ll see Dana later today.
She’ll be doing an initial
health exam on you.

MONICA
Why? I’m fine. It’s not like
I’m infected with something.
Why won’t you let me go?

MONTGOMERY
You’ve been entered into a
test to find a vaccine that
can destroy a deadly virus.

Monica looks at him with anger.

MONICA
I’m not a lab rat. I’m a
human being. I have a life.
I have a family-

MONTGOMERY
(stern)
-And you have no choice.

Montgomery’s stern words stab her into silence.

MONTGOMERY
I suggest you eat what I’ve
brought for you. Once the testing
starts, you won’t be eating much, if at all.

He gives her a serious look and leaves her cell. After a moment to allow his words to set in, Monica picks up a slice of bread from the tray. As she eats, she looks around her cell. For the first time, she realizes that she has no idea the depth and seriousness of the situation. Montgomery’s words give her no hope, only fear. If she’s going to be tested on to find a vaccine against a deadly virus, what will come of her and her unborn child?

CUT TO:

INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE MULDER & KRYCEK’S APT.

Krycek steps off the elevator and is immediately alerted to some suspicious activities when he hears “Careless Whisper” by George Michael being blared from his and Mulder’s apartment. He makes his way to the door and unlocks it.

INT. APARTMENT – CON’T

All the lights in the apartment are off and no one can be seen. Krycek stops in the doorway for a moment. What the hell is going on? “Careless Whisper” ends and “Smooth Operator” by Sade starts to blare loudly from the living room.

KRYCEK
(confused)
Marita?

A goofy grin comes across his face as he notices romantic candle light and wine glasses in the living room. Krycek makes his way, but suddenly stops when he sees two people lying on the couch making out.

KRYCEK
(mad)
Hey!

Mulder pokes his head up from the couch.

KRYCEK
(disgusted)
Mulder?!

MULDER
(somewhat embarrassed)
Hey... I wasn’t expecting
you back so soon...

DIANA
(amused)
Is that Alex Krycek?

MULDER
Yeah.

Krycek smirks, not recognizing her voice.

KRYCEK
(happy; to Mulder)
Dude! I didn’t know you
were with a woman.

Krycek walks over to them smiling. He peers over to see Diana, and SCREAMS! He jumps back a few feet away from them.

Diana and Mulder sit up on the couch. Diana smiles at him with an amused expression on her face.

KRYCEK
(mad; to Diana)
Why the hell are you here?!

MULDER
You mean you didn’t get my note?

Krycek looks to Mulder horrified.

KRYCEK
(pissed)
It said nothing about bringing
her here! (beat) What the hell!

Mulder stands up.

MULDER
(stern)
Diana is my wife, Alex.

KRYCEK
(horrified)
I don’t care! I hate her!

DIANA
(sweet)
Now Alex-

KRYCEK
-DON’T CALL ME THAT!

Diana smiles at him amused.

DIANA
Sasha, “hate” is a
very strong emotion.

KRYCEK
Yeah well... it doesn’t even
begin to express how much I
dislike you! (beat) And don’t you
ever call me Sasha! Wench!

Mulder is not happy with Krycek.

MULDER
(stern)
Alexander, may I have a
word with you in the “Love Room”?

KRYCEK
(mad)
Whatever!

Krycek goes into the Love Room and Mulder follows.

KRYCEK
What?!

MULDER
Diana is my wife, and I
would really appreciate it
if you would show her a little respect.

KRYCEK
Yeah well, I’d appreciated it
if she would leave!

MULDER
But she lives here now.

Krycek jumps back with a spazz.

KRYCEK
She what?!

MULDER
She’s my wife and she lives
here. She lived here long
before you did, buster!

Mulder turns with a huff and leaves the Love Room. Krycek stands there in utter disbelief and horror.

After a moment, Krycek walks out of the Love Room and back into the living room. Mulder and Diana are not there, and are heard in the kitchen making dinner.

Krycek sits on the couch in the living room, then immediately jumps out of his seat realizing what was just going on there. He glares at the couch and shakes his finger at it... that couch should never have let something that perverse happen on it!

Krycek sits on the floor and turns on the TV to watch the local news.

Suddenly, the apartment door opens and a young boy walks into the apartment.

YOUNG BOY
Mom? Dad?

Krycek shoots a horrified look in the boy’s direction! Mulder and Diana have bred?! His eyes widen in fear! The world is coming to an end!

MULDER (O.S.)
We’re in the kitchen!

The boy goes into the kitchen. Krycek pops off the floor and marches into the kitchen. This can not be happening!

INT. KITCHEN – CON’T

The young boy sits at the table while Mulder and Diana prepare dinner.

KRYCEK
Who the hell is that?!

Krycek points to the little boy.

DIANA
(proud)
He’s our son.

Krycek shakes his head. This can not be happening! No! It just can’t! Krycek looks to Mulder with desperate eyes, begging him to tell him this isn’t true.

Mulder smiles proudly.

KRYCEK
In the words of Nancy
Kerrigan: Why Mulder? Why?

Krycek looks like he’s on the verge of crying. How could Mulder breed with Diana Fowley?! Why?!

KRYCEK
I can’t be here! Not with this!
Oh God, please don’t let this be true!

Krycek runs out of the apartment, slamming the door behind him.

Diana and Mulder share a smile.

YOUNG BOY
So do I get my five bucks or what?

DIANA
Yeah. Thanks.

Diana hands the kid five bucks.

YOUNG BOY
(excited)
All right!

The kid pops out of his seat and runs out of the apartment.

MULDER
Alex is so easy to fool.

DIANA
Isn’t he?

She smiles at him, gives him a kiss on the cheek and turns back to her cooking.

CUT TO:

INT. HALLWAY – CON’T

Krycek is quickly pounding at the elevator button in a panic to get the hell out of the apartment. The kid quickly runs by him and down the stairwell to go spend his five bucks. Krycek doesn’t notice him as he continuously checks over his shoulder to make sure Mulder and Diana aren’t coming after him. How could this be happening? The elevator dings open and Krycek looks inside the elevator to find to his horrid surprise: Svetlana Krycek! Alex’s mean older sister!

SVETLANA
Sasha, kak dyeh-lah?

She steps off the elevator and gives Alex a hug and a kiss on the cheek. Krycek’s eyes widen. The world is against him!

KRYCEK
No, no, no, no, no, no...

Krycek quickly rushes away from her and into the elevator. He can’t be here. He’s in his own personal hell! Guess he deserves it after what he did to his friends. But why?! Mulder and Diana breeding?! Svetlana in town?! What could possibly be next?!

CUT TO:

INT. ROBERT ALFREDO’S APARTMENT

Robert Alfredo and Krycek are sitting on Alfredo’s black leather couch. Both are in “lounge around” clothing, wearing ratty jeans and T-shirts. They both have their feet up on the wooden coffee table in front of them. The movie “Old School” is playing in the DVD player.

KRYCEK
Dude, this movie is awesome!

ALFREDO
I can’t wait to see Will Ferrell
get the dart in the jugular.

Krycek and Alfredo laugh.

KRYCEK
And then when he pushes
the kid’s head out of the way!

They laugh even harder.

ALFREDO
And when the guy is giving
him mouth-to-mouth and Will’s
tongue slips into-

Alfredo can’t stop laughing.

KRYCEK
-and he’s kicked back in the pool!

Krycek laughs harder, holding his stomach. They both laugh for a few moments, obviously laughing continuously to avoid what is really on their minds. They settle down and let out sighs.

ALFREDO
We got screwed over didn’t we?

Alfredo doesn’t look at Krycek, and Krycek doesn’t look at him.

KRYCEK
Yep.

Alfredo looks over at Krycek.

ALFREDO
How did you get involved with the Group?

KRYCEK
I killed a rat at Burger Boy.

Alfredo cocks an eyebrow.

ALFREDO
You killed a rat? How old
were you? And what the hell
is Burger Boy?

KRYCEK
I was seventeen. They discovered
me in 1987. (beat) Burger Boy is,
or should I say, was the most disgusting
fast food joint in town.

ALFREDO
Because they had rats?

KRYCEK
No, because I pissed in the drinks.

Krycek laughs like an idiot. Alfredo looks at him not amused.

ALFREDO
That’s disgusting, Alex.

KRYCEK
So. (beat) Anyway, when the Syndicate
discovered me in ’87, I only worked
part-time for them. After I quit my
job at Burger Boy in ’88, I became
a full time assassin for them. (beat)
How’d they get you involved?

ALFREDO
You.

KRYCEK
Oh yeah. (beat) Sorry.

They continue watching “Old School” as Will Ferrell gets the dart in the jugular.

ALFREDO
So what’s really going on?
I was just told to pick them
up and drop them off at this
facility place. (beat) Did they
get themselves involved with something?

KRYCEK
I think it’s better that you don’t know.

ALFREDO
The less I know, the longer
my life will be? Is that what you mean?

KRYCEK
Yeah. That’s exactly what I mean.

ALFREDO
Fair enough. I don’t want
to know anymore.

They turn their attention back to “Old School”.

KRYCEK
I think I’m finally
getting what I deserve
for what I’ve done.

ALFREDO
What?

KRYCEK
(mad)
Mulder’s wife, Diana, is back.

ALFREDO
Since when is Spooky
Mulder married?

KRYCEK
He has been for years, but she
moved over seas. I don’t blame her.
I hate her, and now she’s back.

ALFREDO
Why do you hate her?

KRYCEK
We had sex.

Alfredo looks at him, not understanding why he hates her.

ALFREDO
I don’t think I’m getting it.

KRYCEK
Anyway... not only is Diana
back in town, but so is Svetlana.

ALFREDO
Svetlana? (beat) Someone
else you slept with?

Krycek shoots him an angry glare. How dare he think something like that!

KRYCEK
Ew! No! She’s my sister! Punk!

Krycek hits Alfredo.

ALFREDO
Sorry, I didn’t know.

KRYCEK
My world is over.

Alfredo rolls his eyes. Things could be worse...

CUT TO:

INT. STRUGHOLD RESEARCH FACILITY – RESIDENT’S HALL

Dana Scully and the Cigarette-Smoking Man walk down the carpeted hallway of the Resident’s Hall. The hallway is long, and looks like it could be part of a five-star hotel in the heart of New York City.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
I have made sure to give you the
very best here at the Facility.
(beat) As a way of thanking you
for returning to The Project. You
are our most valued scientist.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man smiles at her.

SCULLY
I appreciate it. Thank you.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
I hope you will find it
comfortable here. If there is
anything you need, please
don’t hesitate to make a request.
(beat) My pent house is on
the third level. (beat) Did you
find your room comfortable last night?

SCULLY
I was pretty exhausted from the
day. A rock hard bed could be
comfortable. (beat) I didn’t find
anything wrong with it.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Good.

SCULLY
How’s the food here?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Satisfactory.

SCULLY
(doubting)
Right.

They reach a stairwell and the Cigarette-Smoking Man opens the door for Scully.

INT. STAIRWELL – CON’T

The Cigarette-Smoking Man follows Scully down the stairs of the stairwell. The stairwell is nicely kept, clean and has windows to peer outside.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
The dinning hall is on the ground
level, along with the gym and
recreation room. Visitor’s Quarters
are also located on the ground level.

SCULLY
(say what?)
Visitors?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Other Project doctors from other
facilities around the world.

Scully nods her head.

SCULLY
Where is my office located?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
In our Research Centre. That’s where
the heart of this Facility is. (beat)
Meetings, lectures, testing. All of that
happens at the other building. (beat)
I’ll show you.

CUT TO:

INT. RESEARCH CENTRE

The Research Centre is a little ways away from the Resident’s Hall. This building is very corporate and professional. The building is four stories high, with underground research and testing labs.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man and Scully enter the building. The ground level is more like a lobby at a busy law firm. There is a dinning hall and post office on this level.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man walks Scully over to the elevator. On the wall next to the elevator, there is a panel that marks the floor they are on in red, and that indicates what the levels consist of:

Third Floor – Research Doctors & Scientist Offices
Second Floor – Conference Hall
First Floor – Lecture Hall
Ground – Lobby, Mail Deliver & Post Office
U.G. LEVEL – Cancer Research
B – Basement, Storage & Supply

The elevator door opens and the Cigarette-Smoking Man and Scully get in. The Cigarette-Smoking Man hits the “UG” button, indicating they will be going to the Underground Level, which has the Cancer Research labs.

SCULLY
Cancer Research?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
It’s only our cover up. Research is
going on, but no one knows what’s
really happening below.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man smiles at her.

SCULLY
So what’s below the basement?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Three levels of Project testing.

SCULLY
Which will I be working in?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
You and Dr. Montgomery will be
working in all three levels. (beat)
The first level, which is beneath
the basement, contains Low Risk
test subjects.

SCULLY
What is their condition?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
They have been infected by
the virus and have good reaction
to the weak vaccine. The subjects
range from poor health of the
slums to people who live well.

The elevator opens and the Cigarette-Smoking Man and Scully step into the Cancer Research level of the building. He leads her down the hall to a door that is locked by a keycard. He scans his card and the door opens, revealing a long narrow staircase heading downward.

They head down the stairs.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
This stairwell leads you down
under the basement to the first
level. There is another door that
you must swipe your keycard through.

They get to the bottom of the stairwell and the Cigarette-Smoking Man swipes his keycard and the other door opens.

INT. LOW RISK RESEARCH LEVEL

The hallway is cold and bare. The white light gives off a pristine look to the level.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Every test subject on this level is
to be escorted by a Project doctor
or scientist, with or without an
armed guard. The armed guard is not required,
but is available to scientists if they
feel they need them.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man takes Scully down a long hall with windows looking into various test subjects' cells.

The test subjects in Low Risk have small living areas with one bed. The bed is fairly comfortable with a soft pillow and blankets.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man and Scully reach the end of the hallway and stand in front of another elevator. The elevator is also marked with a panel telling what is on each level, only there are push buttons next to each level, indicating which one you wish to go to.

Level 3 – Low Risk Research
Level 2 – Medium Risk Research
Level 1 – High Risk Research

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
When accessing the Medium and High Risk
levels, you’ll not only need to swipe
your card, you’ll need to punch
in a six digit code: AREA 51.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man hits the High Risk Level button and punches in the numbers for AREA 51: 273251

The elevator opens and they get in.

CUT TO:

INT. HIGH RISK RESEARCH LEVEL

The hallway is similar to the Low Risk Research level, however the atmosphere is as dreary as death itself. The hallway is colder and seems to have a haunting feel.

CIGARETTE-SMOKIG MAN
This is the High Risk level. Subjects
being tested on have been infected with
the virus and are not reacting to it.
We put first time test subjects in this
level to keep a closer watch on them.

SCULLY
This is where Monica is?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Yes. (beat) When transporting subjects,
doctors and scientists are to be escorted
by armed guards until the subject is
securely locked back in their cell. (beat)
This area is where you’ll be doing a lot
of your research. You’re lab is right here.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man opens the double doors and a chilling breeze rushes over them. Scully shudders a bit, not expecting the cold air.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man takes her to a room with a desk and chair. The room is filled with books, computers, light tables, exam tables, microscopes, etc.

They enter the lab. To the left of the lab, they see the test subject cells. Each cell is marked with the subjects identification code.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Down the hall, this way...

The Cigarette-Smoking Man leads Scully down the hallway.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN (CON’T)
... are where the test subjects are held.

SCULLY
It’s colder down here than
in Low Risk.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Well it has to be. (beat) These
are test subjects who aren’t reacting
to the vaccine, or have just been
infected. (beat) As you know, heat
quickens the mutation of the virus.
You’ll need more time to work with
each subject to develop a vaccine.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man leads her down the hallway, and stops in front of a cell marked “RT-7915-3”. The room is bare with a hard bed, a thin sheet for “warmth”. The cell is very depressing. Inside, Monica Reyes sits on the bed, holding her knees close to her, trying to keep all the warmth of her body inside the best she can.

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
Here is your main subject. Down here,
she is only known as “RT-7915-3”. (beat)
You will be escorting her at all times
with an armed guard. (beat) Even though
she is your friend, she won’t be for long.

The Cigarette-Smoking Man looks at Scully sternly, letting her know she shouldn’t treat Monica any differently.

Scully looks in at Monica. She’s not happy that this is happening, and she’s even more upset that she couldn’t do anything to get Monica out. Hopefully she’ll find a way.

SCULLY
Can she see us?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
No. Two-way mirror. She has
no idea that she’s being
watched.

As he says this, Monica looks over in their direction, as if she’s making eye contact with Scully. Perhaps she could hear the Cigarette-Smoking Man by means of her special ability.

Scully watches Monica for a moment.

SCULLY
What is the procedure for
entering new subjects into The Project?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
First you’ll need to do an
initial health exam to see
how she is now so you’ll
know how her progress is and
be able to notice any changes with her.

SCULLY
How long does that take?

CIGARETTE-SMOKING MAN
A couple days. After that, I’d
ask Dr. Montgomery for the proper
procedure for starting the tests.

Scully nods her head. She has to think of someway to get Monica out of this place. She doesn’t belong here. She needs to return back to her own life and not have to worry about any of this. At least the initial health exam will take a couple days to complete, giving Scully the time to figure out how to get Monica out.

CUT TO:

INT. DEPUTY DIRECTOR ALVIN KERSH’S OFFICE – FBI HEADQUARTERS

Kersh is sitting at his desk, reviewing over a file. Judy, his secretary, interrupts the silence through the intercom.

JUDY (FILTERED)
Sir, Assistant Director Follmer is here.

KERSH
Thank you. Send him in.

A moment later Brad comes into the office. Kersh looks up at him.

KERSH
Have a seat please.

Brad nods and sits down in a chair in front of Kersh’s desk.

BRAD
What’s this about, sir?

KERSH
Due to your recent loss, I’ve
decided to give you two weeks
off from work.

BRAD
Thank you.

KERSH
I’m very sorry for your
loss. (beat) Monica wasn’t
just a great agent, but on
a personal level, she was a
great friend. (beat) I think
she was the only one who tolerated
my button obsession.

Brad smiles, knowing how much Monica loved to go to Kersh’s weekend barbecues.

BRAD
Has Monica’s family been
notified yet?

Kersh nervously scratches the back of his neck. He’s a wee-bit scared of the Reyes family, given their reputation.

KERSH
Uh... no. Not yet.

BRAD
I’m heading down there this
week. I’ll let them know.

Kersh nods his head, relieved that Brad will tell them.

BRAD
(reading Kersh’s expression)
They’re good people, sir.
They may have some issues,
but they are still her family.

Kersh nods.

BRAD
I’ll clean out her office
and then be out of here.

KERSH
All right.

Brad gets up and leaves Kersh’s office.

CUT TO:

INT. DOGGETT/REYES/SCULLY OFFICE

Brad is packing Monica’s desk items into a cardboard box. He opens one of the desk drawers and retrieves a stack of papers that have been bound together. Brad sits in the chair and takes a closer look at the paper. It is a novel Monica has been working on for a long time. A smile forms on Brad’s face as he reads a section about Monica’s time in New York. He flips a few more pages, realizing that she has been writing about her life, and the life of her friends. Recording details to remember later in her life.

Brad looks around and sees some of Scully’s medical books. He goes over and puts them in a box too. Perhaps Doggett will want those.

KRYCEK (O.S.)
Hey.

Brad looks over at the door at Krycek and looks him over. He knows Krycek is involved in their disappearance, but he was warned by Scully not to go to him to seek information.

BRAD
(covering anger)
Hey.

Krycek steps into the office.

KRYCEK
I uh... heard about what happened.

Brad nods his head. Of course he’s heard about what happened.

KRYCEK
(sincere)
I’m sorry.

Brad looks him over. Is he sorry to “hear” about what happened, or is he sorry about what he did to cause all of this to happen?

KRYCEK
Dana was a good friend to me.
Probably the only person I could
really relate to, ya know?

BRAD
Yeah.

KRYCEK
It’s going to be so different
without them, ya know? This office
won’t be the same. (beat) Who’s going
to take care of Mulder now?

Krycek smiles lightly, perhaps he’s truly sorry about what he’s done.

BRAD
Is this office always this empty?

KRYCEK
No. (beat) Mulder’s wife is back.

Krycek sneers his answer.

BRAD
Wife?

KRYCEK
Don’t ask. (beat) So why
are you down here?

BRAD
I’m packing up Monica’s things.
(beat) And I thought John might
want some of Dana’s.

KRYCEK
Yeah. He probably would.
(beat) Need help?

BRAD
No thank you.

Brad picks up the box and heads to the door. His bitterness towards Krycek is obvious, he can’t hide it. He’s had enough conversation with this bastard.

KRYCEK
See you later.

Brad ignores him and continues down the hallway and into the elevator.

CUT TO:

INT. STRUGHOLD RESEARCH FACILITY – SCULLY’S LAB

Monica is sitting on a lab table as Scully is running the initial health exam on her. Neither one of them is happy to be at this place. Scully can sense Monica’s confusion about the situation.

MONICA
Dana?

SCULLY
Yeah?

MONICA
What have I done to
be kept here?

SCULLY
You haven’t done anything.
Yesterday, when we tried to
erase your memory... for some
reason, your brain rejected
the serum. (beat) Dr. Montgomery
gave me two choices: kill you
or enter you into The Project.

MONICA
He came to me this morning
and told me I was going to
be tested on to find a vaccine
against a deadly virus.

SCULLY
Yeah.

MONICA
What is the virus?

Scully sighs. Should she really tell Monica? Probably not. The last thing Scully needs is to tell Monica about aliens. If she does get her out, Monica can’t know about aliens or their plans to colonize that planet. It would be more difficult to get her out if she knew too much.

SCULLY
I can’t give you the details.
It’s better if you don’t know.

Monica nods her head and watches as Scully takes a sample of her blood.

MONICA
Am I going to die?

SCULLY
(hesitant)
No. (beat) I’m your doctor
and will make sure you are
treated well.

Tears come to Monica’s eyes. Scully’s words bring doubt to her.

MONICA
Everyone thinks I’m dead.

SCULLY
Yes. (beat) They sent John back
with the memory that we died in
the car wreck he was in.

Scully doesn’t look Monica in the eyes. She’s trying to hold back tears as well. She needs to remain professional so the Smoking Man won’t put another doctor in charge of Monica.

Scully works in silence for a few moments as Monica watches her.

MONICA
I can’t be here, Dana.

SCULLY
I know.

MONICA
I don’t think you do.
(beat) I’m pregnant.

Scully looks up with wide eyes. This is incredibly bad news to hear at a time like this.

MONICA
Dr. Montgomery told me earlier
today that when you start testing
on me, I may not be eating much.
(beat) What’s going to happen to me?

Scully lowers her eyes. She wasn’t expecting this at all. Monica’s life could be at risk if anyone finds out she’s pregnant. Scully plans not to test on her, but that would become obvious if anyone were to discover her condition. Scully holds back tears before looking up into Monica’s tear-filled eyes.

SCULLY
I don’t know.

Monica lowers her eyes. Scully’s words don’t bring comfort.

SCULLY
How far along are you?

MONICA
Almost five weeks.

Scully nods her head, not sure what to do. She looks at Monica and notices the engagement ring on her finger. Scully’s heart sinks at the thought of being halfway responsible for tearing apart two great people and their future family. Scully hopes she can find a way to get Monica out of this place.

CUT TO:

INT. JOHN DOGGETT’S HOUSE – LIVING ROOM

John Doggett stares at his television set that is airing the local news. Buddy sits on his lap. Doggett’s mind is not on the news. He keeps going back to the memory given to him of the car accident and how he killed Scully and Monica in that wreck. Doggett’s expression is numb, and the way he feels is reflected to his dog as well.

There is a knock on his door.

Doggett looks over at the door and then down at Buddy.

DOGGETT
(to Buddy)
Off.

Buddy does as he says and leaps off of Doggett’s lap. Doggett gets up and answers his door. Brad stands on his doorstep, holding a box full of Scully’s medical books.

DOGGETT
Hey. (beat) I thought you’d
be at work today.

BRAD
I was. (beat) I thought I’d
bring over some of Dana’s
medical books and some other
things she had in the office.

Doggett steps aside to let Brad into his house.

DOGGETT
Thanks.

Brad enters and sets the box down on Doggett’s coffee table.

DOGGETT
How are you holding up?

BRAD
To be honest, I’m not sure.
Everything seems unreal, you know?

DOGGETT
Yeah. (beat) The Bureau’s
given me a month off to recover
from the car wreck.

BRAD
You’ll need that. (beat) They
gave me two weeks. (beat) I’m
going down to Mexico to visit
Monica’s family. I’d rather tell
them in person what happened than
have them receive a heartless phone call.

Doggett nods his head as a sad expression washes over him.

DOGGETT
They’re going to hate me, aren’t they?

BRAD
(knowing what he’s thinking)
It wasn’t your fault, John.
Bad things happen to good people.
They know that. They won’t blame you.
You had no control over what happened.

DOGGETT
I can’t help but feel responsible
for their deaths. If only we left
later from the restaurant.

BRAD
You can’t rest on ‘what ifs’, John.
They won’t get you anywhere.

DOGGETT
(mad)
And where am I going now?
I just lost another person
close to me. (beat) Two people actually.

BRAD
You’re not alone, John.

Doggett looks at Brad, knowing he’s right. Doggett sighs heavily.

DOGGETT
When you get down to Mexico,
could you tell her family
that I’m sorry.

Brad nods his head.

BRAD
As I was cleaning out Monica’s
desk today, I found something
that might interest you.

Brad pulls Monica’s handwritten journal of life out of the box. He holds it up to show Doggett.

DOGGETT
What’s that?

BRAD
Apparently, Monica has been
keeping a record of her life
for a long time.

DOGGETT
Uh-oh. What does she
say about me?

Doggett walks over to Brad and looks at the paper. He’s slightly amused that Monica would do such a thing, but not surprised.

BRAD
I don’t know. I haven’t looked
at it yet. (beat) Should be
interesting to read what she thought
of both of us when she first met us.

Brad smiles, knowing Monica definitely will have interesting things to say. They both sit down on Doggett’s couch and read what she has to say about her life and the people she knows in it. Buddy joins them, hopping up on Brad’s lap to listen to them read.

DOGGETT
Uh-oh. I’m in the first chapter.

Doggett laughs, knowing this is going to be about his childhood with her.

BRAD
(reading)
Today, Johnny, the mean boy
who lives on the farm...

DOGGETT
Oh no, she was a kid when
she wrote that, wasn't she?

BRAD
Looks like it.

He smiles at Doggett.

BRAD (CON'T)
(reading)
... pulled on my braided pig-tails
because I think he likes me.
(Brad laughs) Knowle told me that
he does. So we've decided to gang
up on him and make him kiss me in the barn.

Brad laughs uncontrollably.

DOGGETT
Oh god, I remeber that...

BRAD
I thought you never liked her, John.

He continues to laugh.

DOGGETT
Shut up and read.

We leave them with a happy feeling of remembrance as we...
