FADE IN:

EXT. WASHINGTON D.C. - 1:30 A.M.
March 13, 2004

We are high above our nation's capital and are slowly descending down upon the exterior of Mulder, Krycek and Spender's apartment building.

INT. SPENDER'S APT. - BEDROOM

Spender lies awake, staring up at his ceiling. He is unable to sleep. He had hoped to go to bed early tonight, however Mulder and Krycek saw it fit to stomp around and giggle until midnight. He considered calling the Police on them, but figured they would have put up a fight and got themselves arrested. In which case, they probably would have ended up using their one phone call to call him to come bail them out. So, he didn't call the Police. Restless, Spender turns onto his side and let's out a sigh.

INT. MULDER/KRYCEK'S APT. - LIVING ROOM

Mulder is lying awake on the couch, he's staring up at his fish tank with a concerned expression on his face. Something is troubling him greatly. He looks down on the floor where Krycek is asleep in a sleeping bag.

MULDER
(quiet)
Krycek? Are you sleeping?

KRYCEK
(whisper)
Yes. (beat) What?

MULDER
Do you remember "Romeo & Juliet"?

KRYCEK
Shakespeare.

MULDER
Remember how Romeo had a
feeling that there was something
big going to happen that was
written in the stars? Then he met
Juliet which inevitably lead to their deaths.

KRYCEK
Where are you going with this?

MULDER
I feel like Romeo right now.

KRYCEK
Don't even think of trying
to romance me.

MULDER
No, you idiot.

KRYCEK
What then?

MULDER
I have a feeling something bad
is coming... you know, one of
those 'written in the stars' kind of things.

KRYCEK
Oh no. What if this means our
subscription to digital cable
will expire without warning?

MULDER
No, not like that. Real stuff. Having
to do with our buddies. Maybe it's
a sign that I have to make Brad join
Super Buddies or the world may
come to an end. Or maybe I'll discover
that Samantha isn't alive. Or perhaps
Svetlana is going to visit us again.

KRYCEK
I hope not. She loves to pick on me.

MULDER
Alex. Everyone likes to pick on you.

KRYCEK
What made you think about this?

MULDER
Well, you know after I bounced
around on the pogo stick, I was
extremely tired and fell asleep immediately.

KRYCEK
Uh huh.

MULDER
I just woke up. Maybe something
bad just happened to someone.
I felt - and call me Obi Wan if you
want or Darth Vadar, but I felt a
disturbance in The Force.

They are quiet for a few beats.

KRYCEK
Me too... I was sleeping and woke
up and not because you were
talking in your sleep.

MULDER
See... you feel it too. (beat) Think
I should call everyone and make
sure they're all right?

Krycek looks at the clock.

KRYCEK
No, it's going on two in the morning.
Everyone is probably sleeping. (beat)
Even if something bad has happened
I'm sure we'd get a phone call.

MULDER
(serious)
What if something bad happened
to us? Who would call us then?

Krycek sits up and gives him a look.

MULDER
Doh! That was silly of me to say!

Krycek lies back down.

KRYCEK
Good night, Mulder.

MULDER
Good night, Alex.

CUT TO:

INT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE - BEDROOM - 1:30 A.M.

Doggett is lying awake, staring up at his ceiling. His thoughts are on his son, Luke. He is restless. He turns over and picks up his wrist watch from his nightstand and checks the time. He sits up and runs his hand through his hair.

He gets out of bed and heads to his closet and reaches up and grabs a small wooden box that is marked "Luke John Doggett - January 6, 1986 - August 13, 1993". He handles the box carefully and takes a moment to run his fingers over the text. He closes his closet door and heads downstairs and sets the box of Luke's ashes on the coffee table and sits down in front of it. He does not turn any lights on in the room.

His eyes fill with tears and he bites his lower lip to keep himself from crying outloud. He rests his head in his hands and quietly sobs.

CUT TO:

INT. SCULLY/MARITA/MONICA'S APT. - SCULLY'S BEDROOM - 1:45 A.M.

Scully is sound asleep, peaceful. She is lying on her stomach, her arms covering the pillow her head rests on. She is wearing dark red silk pajamas that are sleeveless.

Her cell phone rings on her nightstand, waking her up after three rings. She wakes with a start and answers her phone.

SCULLY
(sleepy)
Mom...?

DOGGETT
(filtered/quiet)
Dana...

Scully slowly sits up in bed, she glances at her alarm clock and runs her hand through her messy hair. The tone in Doggett's voice concerns her.

SCULLY
Is everything all right?

DOGGETT
(filtered/unsure)
I don't know...

SCULLY
(worried)
What's wrong?

DOGGETT
(shakey voice)
I-I can't sleep... I keep thinking
about Luke... and how (holds back crying)
... how I never caught the man
that hurt him...

INT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - CONTINUOUS

Doggett is crying and wipes a tear from his face. Scully can sense this.

He doesn't say anything for several long beats. Scully is unsure how to respond to him over the phone.

SCULLY
(filtered)
John...?

DOGGETT
(quiet)
Yeah...

SCULLY
(filtered)
I'm coming over, ok?

Doggett nods his head even though she can't see him.

DOGGETT
Thanks...

Doggett hangs up his phone on her and leans back on his couch. He's so tired but thoughts of Luke won't let him rest. He hopes that Dana will be able to help him, he doesn't really know what he expects of her when she comes over, he's not even sure why he called her. He's never called anyone before when he is upset over his son. He dealt with it alone.

CUT TO:

INT. SCULLY'S BEDROOM - CONTINUOUS

Doggett has just hung up on her. She sets her phone down on her nightstand and gets out of bed. She slips into sweatpants and puts on her running shoes, keeping her silk pajamas on. She grabs a t-shirt, jeans, pair of socks, underwear, hairbrush, toothbrush and her cell phone and throws them into a bag and leaves her room.

She walks to the room next to hers - Monica's room, she knocks on the door. No answer. She opens the door anyway.

SCULLY
(quiet)
Monica...

No answer. Scully steps in and as her eyes adjust to the dark, she sees that Monica is not there. Her bed hasn't been slept in. Scully looks around the room suspiciously. Monica's room is even more sparse than the last time she was in here.

Scully leaves her room and grabs her keys from the kitchen counter and leaves the apartment, locking up behind her.

CUT TO:

INT. BRAD'S APT. - BEDROOM - 1:50 A.M.

Brad and Monica are lying in bed. Monica is asleep and Brad is awake. He is lying on his side, watching Monica. He's thinking about how lucky he is that he has Monica in his life. His parents disowned him after he didn't marry Marita last summer and she is all that he has. She is his family.

Monica moves slightly in her sleep and wakes up. She sees Brad watching her, she looks at him oddly.

MONICA
(sleepy)
What time is it...?

BRAD
Late.

Monica cuddles up next to him, resting her head on his chest. Brad lets out a heavy sigh. Monica looks up at him.

MONICA
Penny for your thoughts...

BRAD
You.

MONICA
(smiles)
Me?

BRAD
(serious)
How I don't know what I'd
do without you.

MONICA
I can assure you, you won't
have to live without me, Brad.

She kisses him on the cheek. This doesn't comfort him as she had hoped.

MONICA
What's bothering you? Meeting
my family in a couple weeks?

Silent beat.

BRAD
I've been thinking about how you're
all I've got. If I somehow lost you, I
wouldn't have a family. I wouldn't
have someone to love or someone
to love me...

He pulls her closer to him, as if he is afraid he'd lose her if he didn't.

Monica doesn't say anything. She holds him close. Brad looks down at her and notices that her eyes are filled with tears.

BRAD
Moni... what's wrong...?

A tear falls onto her face, she wipes it away.

MONICA
(crying softly)
You talked about losing me...
that scares me...

BRAD
(soft)
I'm sorry...

He kisses the top of her head. They are quiet for a long time. By the look on Monica's face, we can tell that something else is bothering her. She continues to cry quietly in his arms.

MONICA
(sniffles)
There's something else I haven't
yet figured out how to tell you...

BRAD
What's that...?

Monica hesitates, unsure if she should beat around the bush or tell this to him straight out. She opts for the latter.

MONICA
I'm four weeks pregnant.

Brad sits up straight, a smile on his face.

BRAD
(happy)
That's great Moni!

MONICA
(serious)
It scares me... my family is strange.
They'll take one look at me and know.
They'll be so angry with me...

Monica starts crying again. Brad holds her and speaks softly to her.

BRAD
Don't stress yourself out about this, ok?
You and I know that wouldn't be the
best thing for you and... and our child
right now. (beat) Let me take all the
crap and criticism from your family.

He kisses her on the cheek and wipes away a tear with his hand. She's still crying a little.

BRAD
(lighthearted)
Ok... this really helps explain
how emotional you've been lately.
Probably the reason for your
headaches too... and the crying...

He smiles at her.

MONICA
(through her tears)
Shut up, Bradley.

She smiles and rests her head back on his chest.

BRAD
(quiet)
I love you, Monica Isabella...

MONICA
(soft)
Te quiero támbien.

She tightens her arm around his waist and lets out a sigh.

BRAD
So... do you hope we have
a girl or boy?

MONICA
Girl.

BRAD
Me too.

Brad shifts to get more comfortable so he can fall back asleep. Monica rolls over and faces away from him. Brad turns in the same direction and wraps his arm around her.

CUT TO:

INT. MULDER/KRYCEK'S APT. - LIVING ROOM - 2 A.M.

Mulder and Krycek are both sitting on the couch in the dark. They are playing with a Magic 8 Ball. Mulder shakes the Magic 8 Ball.

MULDER
Where's Samantha?

Mulder looks at the answer window on the Magic 8 Ball, "Yes".

MULDER
Yes? That doesn't make
any sense.

Mulder looks at Krycek.

KRYCEK
Gimme that.

He grabs the Magic 8 Ball out of Mulder's hands. He starts to shake it.

KRYCEK
Does Marita love me?

He looks at the answer: "Yes".

MULDER
Alex, that question is not why
we're consulting the Magic 8 Ball.

KRYCEK
This is dumb. Magic 8 Balls
don't tell the truth.

Krycek shakes the Magic 8 Ball again.

KRYCEK
What's better Cheerios or Lucky
Charms? No, wait. Is the Lucky
Charms' leprachaun homosexual?

He looks at the answer: "No".

KRYCEK
Whatever.

Mulder grabs the Magic 8 Ball from Krycek, he shakes it.

MULDER
Will I be reunited with Diana?

The answer is: "Yes".

MULDER
That's good news now, isn't it?

KRYCEK
No. I think that 8 Ball is broken.

Mulder shakes it again.

MULDER
Ok, Alex. I'm going to ask a serious
question now. (beat) Is one of my
friends going to die?

Mulder closes his eyes and stops shaking the Magic 8 Ball. He looks at what it has to say... the answer is "yes". Mulder's eyes go wide.

MULDER
(panic)
Oh gawd...!

KRYCEK
Mulder, you idiot. I told
you this thing is broken.

Krycek grabs the Magic 8 Ball and he shakes it.

KRYCEK
Ok, watch. I'll ask the same question
you did. (beat) Is one of Mulder's
friends going to die?

Krycek looks at its answer: "Maybe". He shows it to Mulder.

KRYCEK
See. It gave me a different answer.

MULDER
But someone could still die!
Maybe this means there is
a possibility something will happen!

KRYCEK
But I told you, it's broken.

Krycek shakes it again.

KRYCEK
Am I damn sexy?

"Yes".

KRYCEK
All right. This Magic 8 Ball
knows what it's talkin' about!

Mudler stands up, he's crying.

MULDER
Ok! That's it! I'm calling Doctor Laura!

Mulder storms to the kitchen to get the cordless phone.

CUT TO:

EXT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE - 2:03 A.M.

Scully has just parked her car in John's driveway. She walks up to his front door, there are no lights on in the house. She knocks, hoping he hasn't fallen asleep and now she's waking him up again.

A moment later, John opens the door. He looks emotionally beat, he says nothing. Scully steps in and wraps her arms around him, he does the same to her. They say nothing for a few silent moments. John pulls out of their embrace, he doesn't know what to say to her now that she is here. Scully looks up at him, he's been crying his eyes are red with grief.

They walk into the living room, Scully sets her night bag down on the floor next to the couch. She and John take a seat. He sits at a distance from her, in the corner of the couch. Scully's eyes fall on a small wooden box that is laying out on the coffee table in front of her. John motions for her to come closer to him.

DOGGETT
(soft)
C'mere...

Scully moves to his side, he puts his arm around her and lets out a heavy sigh.

SCULLY
(quiet)
You ok?

DOGGETT
Better now that you're here...

SCULLY
Need to talk?

DOGGETT
I don't know... I guess maybe
I did... maybe all I needed was
you being here with me...

Scully sits up and kicks off her shoes and curls up comfortably in his arms, she yawns.

DOGGETT
I'm sorry I woke you.

SCULLY
Doesn't matter.

Scully closes her eyes, Doggett watches her for a beat and then pushes a strand of her hair behind her ear. He opens his mouth to say something, but stops himself. Scully senses this.

SCULLY
(concerned)
What is it, Johnny...?

DOGGETT
Nothing.

SCULLY
Is it about that little box
on your coffee table...?

DOGGETT
Luke's ashes? (beat) No, it's
not that it's...

He doesn't finish his sentence. They sit in complete silence for a moment. Scully wishes that Doggett would open up to her about what is bothering him, even if it is from his past that he doesn't like to discuss with anyone.

DOGGETT
(hesitates/serious/soft)
I love you...

He kisses the top of her head. A small smile forms on Scully's face.

SCULLY
I know.

She lets out a sigh. She looks worried about what John just said to her, it was completely unexpected but she knows that he is not lying to her, that he means what he said. She hopes that he does not expect her to say the same thing to him right now. She yawns not only because she's tired, but to avoid having to say those words to him as well.

DOGGETT
Tired...?

Scully mumbles something of an affirmation.

DOGGETT
Why don't we head upstairs.
Bed's more comfortable than the couch.

Scully lazily opens her eyes and John stands up and helps her to her feet. They walk hand-in-hand up the stairs together, heading to his bedroom.

CUT TO:

INT. SKINNER'S HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - 2:10 A.M.

Skinner and Kim are lying on the sofa sleeper, listening to talk radio... Doctor Laura.

DOCTOR LAURA
Ok, when we come back, we'll
be speaking with "Worried and
Paranoid in D.C.".

The radio program cuts to commercial. Kim starts laughing.

SKINNER
What's funny?

KIM
Next caller is from D.C. I'm
betting it's some top notch
government employee.

SKINNER
Why do you listen to these silly
talk shows? I'm sure the producers
pay writers to come up with these
crazy stories and then hire people
to come into a studio to record phone
calls to be aired at a later date.

KIM
Jerry Springer does something like that.

SKINNER
(appauled)
You watch that crap too?

KIM
No. I would never watch Springer.
(beat) I watch Judge Judy.

SKINNER
Wow. Don't you watch any
non-reality television?

KIM
Sometimes. I always set my VCR
to record "All My Children" and
Thursday nights I like to spend my
time with George Eads for an hour.

SKINNER
George who?

KIM
Eads. He's on "CSI". (beat) Do you
watch that show? It's really getting
disappointing lately... all the contrived
oh-look-Grissom-and-Sara-walk-next-
to-each-other crap. I hate when producers
listen to a fan base that want some
ridiculous relationship between two main
characters, and then they write according
to those people's ya yas.

Skinner gives Kim an odd look, he doesn't get it.

SKINNER
You mean like "Moonlighting"?

KIM
Kinda, but now online groups
push hard for what they want
to see on a show rather than what
the creator and producers originally
envisioned for their show.

SKINNER
That's sad. If I were a creator of
a television show, I'd never give into
the fans, in fact (chuckles) I'd do the
exact opposite of what they wanted. For
example, with "Syndicate X", I would
have paired up Mully and Dogert instead
of the Mully and Sculder that actually
happened-

KIM
- That happened because of crazy
fans that wanted that relationship
over all others.

SKINNER
That's scary. (beat) Do you want a
glass of water, I'm heading to the
kitchen for a snack.

Skinner gets off the sofa sleeper and heads to the kitchen.

KIM
(sarcastic)
Walter... early morning snacks
before you sleep can make you pudgy.

SKINNER
Then there'll be more of me for you.

He flashes her a smile and disappears into the kitchen.

DOCTOR LAURA
(on radio)
Ok, we're back on with "Worried
and Paranoid in D.C.". (beat)
Worried, what's the matter?

MULDER
(on radio/shakey voice)
I can't get back to sleep. I'm
worried about my buddies.

DOCTOR LAURA
What's worrying you about your friends?

MULDER
These bad feelings I have, that woke
me up tonight, and then I found out
one of my friends is going to die.

DOCTOR LAURA
Ok.

Kim's jaw drops wide open, she's recognizes Mulder's voice.

KIM
Wally! Get in here!

Skinner comes running into the living room with a glass of water in his hand.

SKINNER
What?!

MULDER
(on radio/shakey voice)
You know how you get feelings?
Well, I have a bad feeling that bad
things are going to happen.

DOCTOR LAURA
You mentioned you found out
a friend is going to die?

MULDER
Magic 8 Ball told me so.

Skinner jumps backward, having just realized Mulder's voice is coming from his radio. He spills the glass of water all over the front of him.

SKINNER
Oh crap! (beat) Kim, find any
cassette tape marked "Dana Scully"
from under the stereo and pop it
in and record this!

Skinner runs out of the room to go change his clothes. Kim gets off the sofa sleeper and goes to Skinner's entertainment center and finds an audio cassette marked "Dana Scully". Out of curiosity, she pops the tape in and listens to it. It is Scully singing "I Will Always Love You". Kim quickly turns it off and hits record to record Mulder on the Doctor Laura Talk Show.

MULDER
(on radio)
... and then in 1990, my wife
Diana, got a special assignment
in Europe and had to leave. I
haven't seen her since...

KRYCEK
(on radio/background)
Oh God! Mulder! You really called
that doctor chick?! Get off the phone!

MULDER
No! (beat/calmer) That is my buddy
Alexander. He pretends to hate
me sometimes and I don't know why.

Mulder starts crying. We hear the muffles of a fight over the phone as Krycek grabs it away from Mulder.

KRYCEK
(on radio)
Hello?

DOCTOR LAURA
Is this Alexander?

KRYCEK
It sure is, baby. How may
I pleasure you, you sexy beast?

DOCTOR LAURA
Can you put "Worried" on please?

KRYCEK
(amused)
Worried? You mean Mulder?

Krycek laughs and puts Mulder back on, he's still crying.

DOCTOR LAURA
Worried? It's all right. Everything
is going to be ok.

MULDER
(very upset)
What do you know you wicked
witch of the east?!

Mulder hangs up the phone on Doctor Laura.

Kim is back on the sofa sleeper, holding her hands to her stomach, she is laughing hard. Skinner returns to the living room.

SKINNER
What did I miss?

Kim continues laughing, unable to tell Skinner what just happened with Mulder and Krycek on the Doctor Laura show.

CUT TO:

EXT. STREET ALLEY - 2:23 A.M.

Marita is walking down this dark alley alone, carrying a thermos in her hands. She approaches a cardboard box that is decorated with crayon. There are curtains, flowers and bricks drawn on it. Marita knocks on the side of the box.

A moment later, a young blond woman that looks exactly like Marita steps out. This is Maria, Marita's twin sister.

MARITA
I hope I didn't wake you.

Maria looks at her, she's confused as to why her twin sister is out in the middle of the early morning visiting her.

MARIA
What are you doing here?

MARITA
I brought you some hot
chicken noodle soup.

Marita holds up the thermos she is carrying.

MARIA
With alphabet noodles?

MARITA
Yeah.

Marita smiles at her sister and hands her the thermos.

MARIA
Those are the best.

MARITA
Especially the "C"s.

Maria nods her head in agreement.

MARIA
Do you want to come in?

MARITA
Sure.

Marita bends down and enters Maria's cardboard box home.

INT. CARDBOARD BOX

Marita and Maria sit down on a Strawberry Shortcake sleeping bag. Marita looks around.

MARITA
I like what you've done
with the place.

MARIA
Yeah, me too.

MARITA
Especially the curtains
that you drew outside.

MARIA
Yeah.

They sit in awkward silence for a beat. These are two sisters who have been at odds for most of their lives.

MARIA
You look good.

MARITA
Thanks, you too.

MARIA
Yeah.

Another beat of silence.

MARIA
You never come visit me, Marita,
what's on your mind?

MARITA
I couldn't sleep.

MARIA
Me too. I was reading
"The Velveteen Rabbit".

MARITA
Good book. Sometimes
I have Dana read it to me.

MARIA
She's a good person.
Where does she live
now, I know the last time
we spoke was our Junior
year in high school.

MARITA
She shares an apartment
with me.

MARIA
She's not married yet?

MARITA
No.

MARIA
Oh. (beat) Why couldn't
you sleep?

MARITA
Something feels wrong.

MARIA
I know.

MARITA
You feel it too?

MARIA
Yeah.

MARITA
I'm worried about Alex.

MARIA
Which one? The First?
The Second or The Second Junior?

MARITA
The Second Junior. (beat)
He works on the side with
a very bad man. About a
month ago, he was told that
he has to murder some of
our friends, including a man
that I think I've grown to love,
Johnny Doggett.

MARIA
Are you sure Junior isn't jealous
that you like this Johnny, and
that maybe he lied to you and
said he had been hired to kill him?

MARITA
Hmm... maybe, but I doubt it.

MARIA
So tell me about Johnny.

MARITA
Oh he's so handsom, Maria.
He is such a gentleman too,
I don't know what my life would
be like without him in it.

MARIA
Does he love you?

MARITA
Yes, he does, but he pretends
that he likes Dana. I hate that
she always takes men away
from me. At least I know where
his heart truly belongs. With me.

MARIA
What does he do?

MARITA
He works for the FBI. He also
served in the Marines during
Operation Desert Storm, that's
actually how I first met him, when
I was sent to Saudi Arabia to meet
with the royal family. So because
I saw him first, that means Dana
can't dig her claws into him.

MARIA
She never purposely dug her
claws into anyone, Marita.

Suddenly a stray cat walks into the cardboard box and goes and sits on Maria's lap.

MARITA
Oh, what a cute cat.
What's her name?

MARIA
Cat.

MARITA
Aw. I have a kitten named Kitty.

MARIA
Aw, how cute.

MARITA
I know.

MARIA
Don't the stars just
look so off tonight?

MARITA
That's probably what I was feeling.

MARIA
Me too. (beat) You know, I had
a feeling you would come visit
me tonight.

MARITA
Hmm...

Cat goes over to Marita.

MARITA
You know, Maria, I thought
we never got along well.

MARIA
It must be the stars.

MARITA
Oh...

They sit in silence for a few minutes. Cat meows at them and then curls up in the corner of the cardboard box.

MARITA
Ok. I better go now.
It's way past my bedtime.

MARIA
Me too.

Marita stands up and exits the cardboad box.

MARITA
Goodnight Maria.

MARIA
Goodnight Marita.

Marita leaves to go home.

CUT TO:

INT. BRAD'S APT. - BEDROOM - 2:40 A.M.

Brad has fallen asleep and is hogging the bed, Monica is no longer lying next to him. Off screen, we hear a toilet flush and Monica steps out of the bathroom and returns to bed, moaning, she looks ill. She pushes Brad's arm out of her way as she lies down, this wakes him up.

BRAD
(sleepy)
Are you ok?

MONICA
I think it may be that
horrid morning sickness,
or maybe the Chinese
food we had for dinner.

BRAD
Oh.

Monica gets out of bed again.

BRAD
Where are you going?

MONICA
I'm too awake. I'm just
going to get up now.

Monica leaves the bedroom. Brad looks at the clock, 2:43 a.m.

In the living room, Brad hears Monica let out a terrified scream. He jumps out of bed and runs to her side.

BRAD
What? What is it?

MONICA
I saw something.

BRAD
Are you sure you're ok?

MONICA
Yeah...

He leads her to the couch and they sit down.

BRAD
What did you see?

MONICA
You'll think I'm crazy.

BRAD
No I won't. (beat) What was it?

MONICA
I saw Luke.

BRAD
John's son?

Monica nods her head.

MONICA
You think I'm crazy.

BRAD
No I don't. (beat) Does
this mean anything?

MONICA
I don't know. I've never seen
him like this before. He was
just standing there with his
arms outstretched as if he
was reaching for help.

She pauses to think about what seeing Luke Doggett could mean.

MONICA
(eyes wide/scared)
Oh God. What if this means
something bad will happen to our-

BRAD
- Monica, don't think like that.

Monica stops talking.

BRAD
Everything is going to be ok.

MONICA
But you said it yourself. You
were having thoughts of losing
me. What if they were actually
subconscious thoughts of losing-

BRAD
- Monica, please stop talking
like this. (beat) It scares me
to hear you say such things.

Monica looks into his eyes, he is scared and troubled by her thoughts. Not to mention thoughts of actually losing her.

MONICA
I'm sorry.

BRAD
It's ok. You're scared, and
you have every right to be, but
I don't want you to worry, all right?

MONICA
Ok.

BRAD
I think you need
some more sleep.

Monica nods her head. Brad stands up, takes her hand and helps her to her feet.

BRAD
Do you need anything?

MONICA
Water.

BRAD
Ok. Go back to bed and
I'll get you some water.

Monica nods her head and heads back to the bedroom. Brad goes into the kitchen and fills a glass of water for her.

CUT TO:

INT. DOGGETT'S HOUSE - BEDROOM - 2:50 A.M.

Doggett and Scully are lying in bed. Both are awake and facing opposite of each other. Neither one of them knows the other is awake.

Doggett is wondering why he can't open up and talk to Dana about his son and the time during their search for him after he disappeared and when they found him lying dead in a field. After he had spoken to her on the phone and she said she was on her way over, he had prepared himself to talk to her about what made him think of Luke's death, he wanted to share with her that part of his life. Instead, all he could do once she got there was accept her willingness to comfort him without any explaination of what is wrong. That is one of the many reasons why he loves her, she knows exactly how to handle any given situation in the best and most appropriate way possible. She never questions why a person needs her comfort and her help. He worries that he may have jumped the gun when he told her that he loves her. That must have been an odd thing for her to sit through, and totally unexpected, but she replied by saying "I know". He said it, not expecting to hear her say the same thing to him, he has a feeling that she is not ready for that yet and he feels bad that he may have put her on the spot by saying it so soon. Heck, they aren't even in a relationship together yet.

Scully is lying on her side, staring at John's closet door. She is still very concerned for him. She saw the box of Luke's ashes on the coffee table in the living room, she had thought he left it out in the open so it would be easier to bring into conversation with her. His cell phone call convinced her that he needed to talk to someone, but when she arrived he wasn't very talkative at all. He had only told her that her being with him made him feel better and that he loves her.

He loves her. That alone was too much to handle in one night. She had been told those three words, I love you, so many times in her life, but she had never heard it come out of a man who really meant every word of it. This scares her. Love scares her. Intimacy scares her. Commitment scares her. She knows that she wants all of this with John Doggett, she can feel it flow through her blood, he is the one. With other men, she had always been afraid to talk to them about her past experiences, instead she proved to herself that she was fine by focusing her relationships on sex and pushed emotion to the side as if it didn't matter. As if love didn't matter. How could she tell him everything she has been through that scares her away from loving others? How would he react to details of what she went through with Scott? How she almost took her own life because she saw no other option out of her relationship with him. She knows that if she is going to be with John, she must be honest with him, she can't hold back her darkest secrets that she has only shared with her best friend, Alex Krycek. But all this isn't the issue tonight, something is bothering John and she wants to help him.

Restless, Scully turns to face John. His back is to her. A sympathetic smile forms on her face. Over the past few years that she has known him, she fell in love with him and often felt that he had done the same with her. However, unlike John, she couldn't bring herself to say those three little words to him as he had done with her earlier. Not only because it's harder for her to say "I love you" to someone that she honestly is in love with, but because they still aren't technically a couple (or are they by natural default?). She sighs and the smile fades from her face. If time is what John needs in order to feel comfortable being in a relationship with her, then time is what she'll give him.

Having heard her sigh, Doggett turns to face her. She has shut her eyes and appears to be sleeping.

DOGGETT
(whisper)
Dana... you awake...?

Scully opens her eyes and looks at him to answer his question.

DOGGETT
(whisper)
What are you thinking about?

SCULLY
Love... you... me...
(beat) Luke.

DOGGETT
What about Luke?

Scully takes in a breath and shuts her eyes as she exhales. She knows how much this topic hurts John, and hurting him is the last thing she wants to do. If he needs to talk, he needs to talk and she wants to be here for him, always.

SCULLY
I guess not so much Luke. I'm
still concerned about why you
called me at one thirty in the
morning. Then when I get here,
you have nothing to talk about.

Doggett rolls onto his back and stares up at the ceiling. He is quiet for a long time. Scully isn't sure if he's avoiding the topic she has brought up or thinking of a way to talk about it himself.

DOGGETT
(quiet/soft)
Sometimes... Luke would wake
me up Saturday mornings. We
would lie in bed... staring up at
the ceiling. (beat) You see, the
ceiling in our old home was white
and Luke always said it made him
hungry for cottage cheese. (beat)
The ceiling here is the same way.
We use to look at it and find shapes
that reminded us of animals...

John smiles at his fond memory of Luke.

SCULLY
(lighter tone/slightly amused)
Bumps on your ceiling is the reason
why you called me?

Doggett doesn't answer her question. Scully's attempt at lightening his mood failed.

DOGGETT
(serious)
I really miss him, Dana.

He rolls onto his side so he can talk to her face-to-face.

DOGGETT
When I can't sleep, I often find
myself staring at the ceiling, thinking
of him. My mind goes from thoughts
of cottage cheese to feelings of guilt
because his case was never solved.
(beat) Normally I've dealt with my
emotions alone, I never talk to anyone
about them. I wanted... I need to share
that part of my life with you.

Doggett looks her directly in the eyes and takes a deep breath. A tear falls down his face. Scully moves closer to him, tears are threatening to fall from her eyes as well. Doggett composes himself and speaks again, this time more revealing and vulnerable. As if he's confessing something no one else knows.

DOGGETT
My marriage to Barbara wasn't
the best. We married young.
Barbara was 18 and I had just
turned 19. We thought we were
in love... later the only thing that
kept us together was our son.
(beat) He was always a happy kid.
(beat) He was the only real thing
I had that made me truly happy...

Another tear falls down his face, he wipes it away with his arm. He smiles at Scully, and wipes a tear from her face.

Scully leans toward him and kisses him on the cheek. They both get more comfortable and Scully rests her arm across his chest and lies her head close to his body. She doesn't know what to say to him. Words aren't what he needs to hear. She knows he needs to feel her love, her understanding and how much she cares for him.

DOGGETT
(choking up)
The morning Luke disappeared...
I um... I went into work early to
meet with a woman. I was
supposed to take Luke to school
that morning, but I left a note for
Barbara, telling her to do it. (beat)
I was having an affair and that day
I saw it more important to go into the
office to have sex with this woman
than to safely take my son to school.

Doggett holds his breath, not wanting to loose control of all his emotions. Scully feels his pain radiating from his body, it hurts her to listen to him relive these moments from his life.

DOGGETT
(angry with himself)
That's why I blame myself, Dana.
I ignored a simple responsibility
because of selfish reasons. There's
no one else to blame, not Monica,
not Barbara, not the person who
took Luke, not the NYPD and not
the members of the task force to find him.
It's all me, my fault. I killed my son.

Doggett starts crying uncontrollably. Scully sits up and takes him into her arms and holds him, comforting him. He wraps his arms tightly around her, burying his head into her neck, hanging onto her for fear that he will lose her too. Scully runs her hand through his hair and whispers into his ear that everything is going to be fine, that she is here for him. She shuts her eyes and tears fall onto her face. With her emotional problems and his problems, their relationship is not going to be easy, but she is in this for the long run.

Doggett pulls away from her to look at her, his eyes are red from crying. Scully uses her thumb to wipe tears from his face, she leans forward and kisses his forehead and gives him a weak smile. His eyes tell her that he wants to tell her he loves her again, but is hesitant to do so.

SCULLY
(soft/acknowledging his thought)
Me too...

They lie back down in bed, curled up in each other's arms. Sleep won't be easy tonight but being with each other is what matters.

CUT TO:

INT. MULDER/KRYCEK'S APT. - 3:21 A.M.

Mulder and Krycek are sitting on the floor in the living room, each on opposite ends of the coffee table. A little ping-pong net is set up in the middle of the table. They are using their hands as paddles and a ball of dried up rubber cement as their ball. They are really good at this game. They talk as they play.

MULDER
Ok, so in a couple days
I'm going to figure out a
way to make Brad join
Super Buddies. I was thinking
of holding some kind of
official ceremony.

KRYCEK
Official ceremony? You
have to let me help you
plan that you know.

MULDER
I know. You're the Vice President.

KRYCEK
That I am. Can I do a speech?

MULDER
Sure. Just as long as
I get to give Brad a kiss
on his cheek.

KRYCEK
Mulder, why do you say
things like that?

MULDER
What do you mean?

KRYCEK
Kissing men... I mean...
you are married, right?

MULDER
Yeah. But it's ok to kiss friends.

KRYCEK
But you make it seem so...

MULDER
N'Sync?

KRYCEK
Exactly! (beat) Ew! Mulder!
You contaminated our air
space by saying that!

Mulder and Krycek spazz, grossed out by the word "N'Sync". Their tongues stick out, their eyes roll back and their arms flail wildly about. Mulder stands up and starts jumping.

MULDER
(jumping)
Ew! Ewie! Ew!

Krycek joins him, jumping.

KRYCEK
Grodie! Grodie! Grodie!

They start howling, knowing very well that this racket will probably wake up Spender below them.

MULDER
I can't believe you
said that man!

KRYCEK
I didn't say it! You said it!

MULDER
(loud)
Ew!

The both of them continue stomping around.

MULDER
That's it! I'm getting toothpaste
and anti-bacterial soap!

He disappears. Krycek stops spazzing. He's calm. Mulder returns a minute later and Krycek starts to spazz again.

KRYCEK
Ew! Ewie! Ew!

Mulder squirts toothpaste and soap into his mouth and adds a sip of water and swishes it around.

There is a knock on their apartment door. The boys quiet down and calmly answer it.

It's their friendly neighbor from downstairs, Jeffrey Spender.

KRYCEK
What's happenin' brother?!

SPENDER
It's past three in the morning
and you two ninnies are loud
and I can't frickin' sleep.
Please shut up.

Spender pulls out two candy bars from behind his back and hands them to Mulder and Krycek. Mulder opens his mouth and the toothpaste/soap mixture pours out onto the front of him. Spender is disgusted.

SPENDER
Please, take this candy and
promise to be quiet.

MULDER
Ok, brother of mine.

Mulder shuts the door. He and Krycek go sit down on the couch and eat their candy. They are absolutely quiet.

MULDER
It's funny, ya know...

KRYCEK
Yep.

MULDER
He just gave us another
dose of sugar and he
expects us to calm down
and remain quiet.

KRYCEK
I know.

They share evil mischevious looks and finish off their candy bars, knowing very well that this is a weekend night and that Spender has nowhere to be in the morning.

FADE OUT:

THE END.
